Chapter 403: Rescued from the bunker.
“Well….” She said slowly, taking her hammer from the tool belt. It started expanding as she kept her eyes focused on Carson.

Nimo got a gun and pointed it him. “Don’t move.”

Carson felt the urge to roll his eyes. For starters, why was Sunshine always bringing out a hammer for the smallest reason? Didn’t she have any other weapons in her arsenal?

Also, he could self-heal, Nimo’s gun would probably injure him but not kill him. And he proceeded to say as much. “You do realize that I can heal from a gunshot wound, right?”

Nimo scoffed. “Not if I shoot you, cut you open and take out your heart. I don’t think you can grow a new one.”

At her side, Sunshine laughed, “Boy do I have news for you Neems….”

Nimo gasped. “He can grow a new heart! I am getting more confused on which powers I want to awaken. This sounds cool too.”

“Put away your weapons. I know about Sunshine’s space ability, it is the same as Ronda’s. As for the stone, I don’t really care. I already awakened; I cannot do so a second time. Your secret is safe with me.” Carson assured her.

He had followed quietly, to protect her and Nimo.

“I know.” Sunshine said. She brought her hammer down on a large rock, splitting it into four pieces. “Fill your bag with some rocks.”

They returned to the surface after finishing that task. Kent was waiting for them, pacing from side to side.

“I have got it.” Carson lied. He slapped the bag on his back.

Sunshine added, “We will test it and see what it is.”

Kent nodded, trusting her completely. He even offered to help Carson carry the bag to the truck where they placed it down with care.

“Be careful with that thing,” Kent said. “It may come alive and electrocute you. Looks dangerous if you ask me. Glad to be getting rid of it.”

Sunshine nodded. She was gladder that he felt that way.

The bunker under the White house had become a hell of its own. Trapped under a mountain of rubble, half-starved, air growing stale, tempers razor-thin_ the people inside had started turning on one another like cornered animals.

Paranoia had tripled because people vanished every other night, and cries crept through the dark hallways like growing mold.

Dr. Henry Nickels was whispering around that Ceasar was responsible for the disappearances. He was Ceaser’s doctor so many believed that had heard or seen something

The doctor had gone missing too.

Of course, President Ceaser feigned innocence, as he always did. The man had perfected the art of sounding offended.

“Me? Kill my own citizens? That’s outrageous,” he’d say while refusing to meet anyone’s eyes. “I’m the leader of this country. Killing all of you would be… obscene. We are all in this together.”

But everyone knew the truth: when it came to survival, Ceaser would gladly sell his own mother if it gave him one extra day.

Since then, people slept with one eye open others with knives just in case they were picked next. They slept in groups and went everywhere in pairs. The disappearances had stopped.

It was another miserable day in the bunker, but a sound broke through, surprising everyone. A rumble shook the ground above them_ dust drifted down like powdered doom.

The people in the bunker collectively froze.

At first, there was hope.

“Someone found us,” whispered Jade Garwood. “We prayed for this day!”

But the hope lasted only ten seconds.

“It’s too early to celebrate…. they may be here to kill us for the supplies.” Lugard said.

“It could also be an earthquake.” Someone suggested.

Some people whimpered. Some prepared for death. Others held on to the hope that they were being rescued.

They listened and heard the scraping of heavy rubble being dragged aside. Not delicate, careful… but fast. Aggressive. Too calculated to be rescuers.

Ceaser stood up so fast he knocked over a crate. “Soldiers! Arm yourselves!” he barked, voice already panicking. “Those aren’t rescue teams or they would be more delicate. They’re here for our supplies!”

People exchanged horrified looks. Suddenly, they wished they’d never prayed so loudly. Apparently, the heavens had decided to answer with sarcasm.

Above ground, Dr. Roy Fassbender_ former personal doctor of President Finch and now head of the superhuman marauder group_ watched as Rogier, their geokinetic, waved his hands and peeled away layers of rubble like he was unwrapping a giant, concrete candy.

“Hurry up,” Roy snapped. “Others will be here for the bunker sooner or later. We do not want to waste time fighting…..the supplies in there are ours.”

Rogier grunted. “I am trying…this is harder than it looks.”

At last, the metal surface of the bunker door revealed itself beneath the rubble. A thick, reinforced slab_ one of the safest in the country.

Elise_ a superhuman with strength like a forklift on steroids_ cracked her neck and stepped forward. “Stand back, gentlemen.” She grabbed the metal edges, planted her feet, and punched.

Inside the bunker, metal groaned, bolts screamed, and a long crack zigzagged across the door.

Ceaser felt sweat bead under his collar. “We will fight them! We are the true owners of this place. Protect the food and water or die trying,” he shouted, chest puffed.

Someone muttered, “Sir, half the people in here think you’re the reason we’re dying_”

“Shut up,” Ceaser snapped.

The door continued to bend fold inward and then it snapped after one strong, swift kick. It flew in ward. Some soldiers ducked and others started fighting back.

A bullet rung clear, it tore into Elise’s shoulder just as she stepped inside and she moved back outside quickly.

“Oh, crap,” she hissed. “They have guns.”

Then a voice boomed from inside the bunker.

“Whoever you are_ I am the President of this great nation! Show me respect or prepare for war!”

From the side, Dr. Roy stepped into view.

“President my ass.” Then his skin hardened, metal rippling across him until he was solid iron from head to toe. “You made yourself president. Finch is still alive, and he has a new base of operations. Technically, by calling yourself president, you are committing treason Ceasar.”

Inside, Ceaser paled. “Shoot him!” he screeched.

Lugard and the remaining soldiers obeyed, unleashing a storm of bullets onto the superhuman whose figure was blocking the only exit and entrance. But the bullets pinged off him harmlessly, bouncing in every direction.

One ricocheted into a soldier’s shin, another clipped another soldier’s helmet, another lodged itself in a ceiling beam.

In twenty seconds, the shooters were ducking for their lives.

Roy yawned. “Are we done? I do not have the entire day.”

Then, with one punch, he sent a soldier flying. Other superhumans stepped inside, screaming and laughing.

The ordinary people in the bunker stepped back in fear. Some screamed. Others fainted.

One woman simply lay sat and said eagerly, “Kill them, Lugard and Ceasar. We have suffered greatly at their hands. They killed our loved ones.”

The marauders poured in_ some flying, some leaping, some stomping like happy rhinos. Within five minutes, Ceaser’s entire group was on their knees, hands on their heads, weapons tossed aside.

Roy walked up to Ceaser, his iron footsteps echoing like hammer strikes.

“Hello, Ceaser,” he said cheerfully. “Miss me? You advised Finch to fire me right before the apocalypse…..do you remember that?”

Ceaser’s lips trembled. “Dr. Roy, that was my mistake. These are different times, I… we… we can negotiate_”

“Negotiate?” Roy burst out laughing. “With you? You are an animal Ceaser, A hypocrite…. anyone that trusts you is a fool.”

While men held Ceaser at gunpoint, the other marauders fanned through the bunker. In one cold storage room, they found the bodies of the loved ones the woman had talked about.

All dead.

Bodies stacked like blankets in a cold storage.

“Over here, we got dozens of dead people.” Elise called out.

One body was carried out and dumped on the ground. People recognized the doctor, Henry Nickels. Gasps and outrage broke out.

Dr. Henry’s wife tried to attack Ceasar but one of Roy’s people stopped her.

“He really killed them!” a woman screamed.

Ceaser hissed at Lugard. “I told you to burn them!”
