Chapter 401: Mortified.
As she pulled up outside her residential building, she turned on the system notifications to see the progress of her smart repair tools. The announcements fell like drops of rain.

[Ding_ Task completed, you have been rewarded 50 coins and 15 merit coins.]

[Ding_ Task completed, you have been rewarded 150 coins and 30 merit coins.]

[Ding_ congratulations host on task completion, reward is 100 coins and 20 merit coins.]

She smiled. Things were progressing smoothly. An older gentleman that was taking his dog out for a walk tipped his hat to her, assuming that she was smiling at him.

She nodded at him.

“Is it true that the swimming pool will be opened now that the sun has come out?” He paused and asked.

Sunshine pushed the elevator button. “Well…”

One of Tracy Kingsley’s rich friends, Fergie Sandman rushed over like a hurricane had summoned her. “I heard about the pool. Please tell me we don’t have to share it with the common folk in the third wall.”

Sunshine rolled her eyes and muttered. “I am way too hungry to deal with this.” She ducked into the elevator without addressing that issue.

Their behavior was once again a reminder that she had given the residents such a good life that they had forgotten there was an apocalypse!

With those thoughts in mind, she entered her house, and walked straight to the dining table where more questions were waiting. But at least they were about Aladora.

“Did you have a little girl baby last night mommy?” Castiel went first.

Sunshine almost choked on her coffee. She placed the cup down and wiped her mouth. “Sweetie, let mommy eat.”

Castiel continued nevertheless, “Earl says you bought her from the supermarket in the special place where the black hole donuts come from. Ariel thinks you kidnapped her.”

Sunshine frowned. There were a lot of theories going around.

“If you buy another baby, bring the mermaid baby from the video you showed us.” Castiel told her, slowly abandoning his chair to find a place in her lap.

[Reasons not to kidnap a mermaid baby.] The system jumped in.

Sunshine groaned.

Hades put the tab down, “Honey, what do you think about us going into the publishing business. Breakfast without a newspaper in hand is truly … I don’t know how to describe it.”

“Sad.” Ariel chipped in.

“Empty.” Earl suggested.

“Can we put a picture of the mermaid baby in the newspaper?” Castiel asked.

[Reasons not to show off your kidnapped mermaid baby.]

Sunshine groaned again.

“Is everything okay Suni?” Hades asked curiously.

She smiled. “Peachy.”

After breakfast, she sent everyone out of the house as if it was on fire. Then, she collapsed on the couch, sighing on relief. “Sweet, sweet, glorious silence.”

She loved her family but sometimes, they just talked forever. The system was apparently becoming a regular Quinn now!! What had happened to the silent system that only chimed when it had something important to say?

Just then, the system sent an alert from a payment that she received from Bjorn. It was for the fish from the Levias seas that she had sold to her. It was just six thousand gold coins but it was a sign that her finances were recovering.

“System, I need fertilizer that will heal the soil in Busker.”

[You have flowers and serums.]

She lifted her head, adjusting a pillow. “People will understand fertilizer better because they know about it and half of my flowers and serums are gone.”

[You realize your gold is going to be used.]

As she rushed to Hades’ secret vault, she thought about the progress report from Busker. According to Mr. Reed, the agronomist, most of the soil in Busker was still toxic and it would take at least three years to recover.

As for the experimental fields where flowers that absorbed toxins had been planted, he reported that crops could grow but they would not produce anything decent because the soil lacked minerals.

Serums could help with minerals but for fertility, manure would be sufficient.

She took three thousand gold bars and sent them into the space.

The virtual screen shimmered to life with options for fertilizer.

[Option one: Vulkrion Nitro-Boost Fertilizer_ revitalizes soil in 12 hours, boosts growth speed x2, restores mineral layers but reacts violently under extreme heat, capable of causing chemical explosions. It is used in extremely cold places.]

Sunshine immediately shook her head. She would be crazy to use that.

[Option two: Yerranova Bio-Morph Binder_ creates new soil layers, increases moisture retention, multiplies nutrient pockets. Con: aggressively mutates weeds into fast-growing, hostile vines that require weekly burning or uprooting.]

Sunshine groaned loudly. “No murderous weeds. Maybe….but for now, pass. We have enough mutation going on”

[Option three: Purina Earth-Root Conditioner_ moderate but guaranteed soil recovery, improves crop vitality, increases harvest by 40%, safe for all plant species. Con: releases an atrocious sulfur-rotting-onions-and-socks stench for 48 hours after application.]

Sunshine grimaced. “So… horrible smell but no death or mutated plants?”

[Correct], the system jumped in. [And it is right up your alley because it is cheap, just one gold coin per bag.]

A smile blossomed on her face, one warmer than the rays of the sun. She wiped dry tears from the corners of her eyes. “System, we finally understand each other. This is great. I’ll take the smelly one, most organic fertilizer smells anyway. Purchase two thousand bags. Do you see how generous I am?”

She heard the silent judgement of the system, but she did not care.

Three minutes later, the bags were sent to a warehouse directly by the system. She got off the couch and left the house. Day drove her to the warehouse which was near the gardens and she inspected the bags.

As with most products from the system, the original labels had been removed and replaced with Quinn group logos.

“Smart as always.”

[Thank you.]

She radioed Dwayne to bring people to move the bags of fertilizer out.

He arrived with a team of twenty men and nearly fainted when he saw the mountain of bags.

“I will not even bother asking where these came from” he said.

“Great….because I will not tell you,” she replied. “Load everything. It is going to Busker.”

He called for more people to join them because 2000 bags were simply too many for twenty men. One hundred more joined them. They stacked bag after bag into giant trucks.

At another warehouse not so far away, trucks rolled out, carrying heat-resistant overalls. Elsewhere, Ariel and the kids squad supervised trucks that were being loaded with food supplies, thermal bands, computers and registration systems for integrating the new territories.

Every truck that was sealed went off to the third wall for a final check.

There, Hades stood on an improvised platform, briefing squads in his booming, drill-sergeant voice: He addressed everything from routes, goals and danger zones to how to avoid becoming grilled human snacks when the heat arrived.

When everyone boarded, Sunshine climbed into her regular truck. Nimo slid behind the wheel like she owned it.

As they rolled out, Sunshine heard shouting from the megaphones. It was coming from the broadcasting station in the information center. Lisha and Zulu fighting for dominance again.

“I AM THE FACE OF THE BASE!” Lisha shouted.

“Your face scares babies!” Zulu shrieked harder.

“Purple picked ME for the morning show!”

“She did NOT!”

“SHE DID!”

The gate shut. Nimo raised an eyebrow. “Please tell me you didn’t choose a parrot to host the morning show like it’s claiming.”

Sunshine dragged her hands down her face. “Please don’t ask. I’m just happy we’re leaving right now and they won’t have to come to me and demand for answers.”

Nimo chuckled.

“What’s that thing on your arm?” Sunshine pointed to the red string around Nimo’s bracelet.

Nimo blushed.

Sunshine’s brows rose curiously. “Dwayne?”

“He said it was for good luck.” Nimo answered quickly. “I run into him at the bar last night. He was handing them out to some soldiers. It is nothing special.”

Sunshine snorted. “I am his friend slash goddaughter and I didn’t get one.”

Nimo laughed before quickly changing to another subject. “I heard the Steward’s took a little girl shopping today morning. They are telling everyone its their daughter. We both know what happened to their children.” She turned to Sunshine. “Whose child is that?”

Sunshine replied with ease, “She is their child. That is all that matters.”

The truck bounced after passing over a hump. “Rumor has it the little girl was brought out of your building by you.”

Sunshine groaned. “Neems, stop gossiping. The base is really too small, rumors travel so quickly.”

“Even Townsend knows about this already.” Nimo shared.

Sunshine’s upper lip curled. “How?”

Nimo shrugged. “I heard his voice on the radio when I visited Nala in the medic bay. Townsend was practically begging for gossip. The Stewards are famous you know. The only superhuman couple in the base. And Dominic….those smoldering eyes. Apparently even when he is angry, he makes you wet instead of scared.”

“Neems!!!” Sunshine screamed.

Nimo rolled her eyes. “Not my words, Fergie Sandman said it. I am just sharing gossip as I heard it. I am team Dwayne and he is enough to make me cream.”

“Neems!!!” Sunshine screamed again.

The radio made some static sound and someone cleared their throat. “Maybe save these conversations for when you are alone and your radio is turned off Nimo.” Father Nicodemus advised them.

Nimo turned off the radio. Neither of them had realized that it was on.

Sunshine was mortified, but Nimo wanted to die.

They followed the road in silence until Sunshine’s walkie-talkie crackled. “Mrs. Quinn, this is Kent from Hunkerville. We… found something. In the tunnels.”

Sunshine leaned forward. “What kind of something?”

“A stone. Blue. Glowing.”

Her heart raced. “Describe the glow.”

“Soft blue. It is creepy, like its breathing. And the air around it feels like electricity….kind of.”

Sunshine’s stomach dropped. “Leave it alone. We’re coming.” she turned to her neighbor. “Nimo, we’re diverting. Busker first, then Hunkerville.”
