Chapter 400: A home for Aladora.
The sound of terror in his small voice sent everyone running from the kitchen and rushing to his side.

They found him sitting on the floor, eyes wide in terror, mouth trembling. He was looking at a little red-haired girl in a white dress that was a little too long and big for her body.

“Mommy, gho…gho…ghost.” he burst into loud cries.

Ariel and Earl clutched Sunshine’s purple dress, sticking to her side. Their eyes were also focused on the stranger in their home.

“I see it too.” Earl wailed.

Ariel’s eyes looked around for something to throw at it.

Hades came out of the bedroom, took one look at the girl and jumped up as if a cockroach had tried to climb up his legs. “Suni….” he shouted. “What is this?”

“She is not a ghost.” Sunshine said loudly. “She is a child.”

Despite her assurance, none of the males dared to approach or let down their guard. Only White was brave enough to approach Aladora.

But as soon as she saw him, she screamed just as Castiel had done when he saw her.

White had never met anyone that was terrified of him. Her reaction confused him. The cub turned to Sunshine, scratching his head. He had the “what did I do?” look in his eyes.

Sunshine stood up with Castiel in her arms, and she handed him to Hades. “Aladora and I need to visit a friend. You can all start breakfast without me.”

“Whose kid is that?” Hades asked her.

“Why is her hair so red?” Castiel asked.

“Why are her eyes like a snake’s?” Earl questioned.

“How did she get here?” Ariel also pitched in with a question.

Sunshine sighed. “Too many questions. No time to answer them one at a time. I will tell you all about it when I return.”

She walked around the boys, picked up Aladora and left the house. As she made her way through the building, curious residents stared at the little girl. Some tried to talk to Sunshine, but she avoided them.

Day had not yet arrived so Sunshine drove personally to Leah and Dominic’s home. She needed to explain some things to Leah alone, so she gave Aladora some snacks and left her in the car with the window open.

“Don’t go anywhere?” She said gently.

Aladora nodded.

As she walked to the door, Sunshine wondered if things would go as she imagined. If they did not, she would take Aladora to Rori. Maybe the little one would be better off as a Quinn. But it would not hurt to find her a mother and father that could protect and love her.

Maybe the three broken people could heal each other.

Before she knocked on the door, it swung wide open. Dominic stood on the other side, looking fierce as always. “Are we going to Westbrook town or have you found Moon?”

Sunshine shook her head. “I need to talk to you and Leah about something sensitive. May I come in?”

He let her in, leading her to the kitchen where Leah was having breakfast at the table. As always, the air between the couple was heavy.

Sunshine did not waste time on pleasantries. As soon as she sat down, she started, “There is a little one who needs a home. She lost everyone and she has been hurt more than any child should ever be. I could keep her, but I have a feeling that I am not who or what she needs. Leah….Dominic….I know you have been through a lot. But I think you could be the ones to save her.”

Dominic frowned, his hands clenching tightly. “We’re barely holding on. We are drowning. How can we bring someone else into this hell?”

Sunshine’s eyes flickered, she looked at Leah. “I understand that you are in pain, but I also know that Aliana would want you to heal. You have lost so much–this child she is just like you. Maybe you could help each other find a way back. Maybe, she can give you a reason to hold on. We will find Moon, and you will get your revenge. What happens after? Will you continue to live in darkness? This little girl…. she could be your light.”

Silence stretched. Dominic looked at his wife, at the grief stamped into her face. In her eyes, he saw a deep longing.

Leah looked at Sunshine and whispered, “You said she is a little girl and nobody wants her.”

Sunshine nodded.

“We will take her.” Leah said softly, wiping tears from her eyes. “For once, I would like to believe in fate. Maybe our children returned to us like this. Maybe Aliana sent her to comfort us. Or maybe I just need a reason to continue breathing.”

Sunshine exhaled. It was the result she was hoping for.

“There are some things I cannot explain to you right now. But…..” Sunshine looked at them. “The girl, Aladora, she is special. She does not talk a lot. She has lost faith people and thinks everyone is out to beat or lash out at her. You will need to be patient.”

Leah nodded.

Sunshine led them outside and opened the door of the car. She carried Aladora out and placed her on her feet. The girl was clutching a packet of chips and stuffed giraffe toy Sunshine had given her. Bruises still shadowed her neck; there was no telling what the rest of her looked like.

Leah choked on a sob; without hesitation she knelt and opened her arms.

Sunshine pushed Aladora forward. “It’s okay Aladora, they will be your new mom and dad. From now on, you will have a family of your own. They have promised to take good care of you. You will never suffer again.”

Aladora looked back at Sunshine with a familiar look in her eyes. The same one which showed resignation to her fate. She stepped forward and collapsed against Leah.

Leah embraced Aladora gently, as if she was a precious new doll that she would never let go of. A fragile, irreplaceable doll. Tears streamed down her face; grief mixed with joy over a bons that she felt forming in an instant.

In Aladora’s face, she could see traces of Aliana.

Dominic stood to the side, watching. For the first time in months, he saw traces of his old wife. Her sorrow was softening; purpose was taking its place. For that alone, he was willing to take in this little girl and become her father. He would never repeat his failures. He would protect them fiercely.

Sunshine entered her car and drove away, knowing that she had done what was needed. They would be okay, hopefully.
