Chapter 390: Not the government.
Those words silenced whatever doubts remained.
Sunshine looked at her husband with a flash of quiet pride before turning to the comms officers. “Have your drones pick up one box of the cream and one box of radio batteries each. Drop five boxes in each of the territories.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Carson replied immediately. Within seconds, drones lifted off the ground_ buzzing softly as they latched onto boxes.
Their metallic shells reflected the pale morning light as they ascended like a swarm of controlled machines, disciplined and purposeful. They hovered for a moment, receiving coordinates, then shot off through the small gate.
Carson watched them go, still chewing his lip. “Avoid the watchers,” he muttered. “We are racing against time here.”
She turned to the assembled squads in their gear, clutching their new dragonoids that could release red and blue fire. The blue fire produced a gas that could freeze. In the coming heat, they would need it to fight back against beasts that were fire resistant.
“The rest of you,” Sunshine raised her voice, “You will be heading out to the towns to check on our neighbors and deliver new medicines, heat resistant clothes and weapons. Be safe out there, no mistakes. if you are in danger, turn back. Do not take unnecessary risks. This is not a life and death mission.”
Hades had not heard about the resistant clothes. He turned his head Sunshine’s way, surprise in his eyes. Had she done more shopping with her system?
Ariel, Hadrian and Lisha arrived with the professors from the lab and team which worked in the supply department. The kid squad had come too, dressed in their small black swat gear with bulging pockets and bullet proof vests.
Sunshine could not help it when she saw them, she sniggered. And she was not the only one. The kids squad was more adorable than scary.
Ariel was quick in taking a megaphone to announce what he had brought personally. “Attention soldiers.” He said sternly like a seasoned commander that had led troops into battle many times. “My mom has worked hard with the professors to make these clothes. To save material so that they can make as many as possible, most of these are jumpsuits.”
A young girl stepped up, dressed in the said jumpsuit. It had a faint shimmer like liquid glass, but appeared to be soft like silk. It covered her from head to toe, leaving only parts of her hair on her forehead and face exposed.
“You should explain to the base managers where you go that only two jumpsuits should be provided per person.” Sunshine shared a reminder that she had almost forgotten. “But as we continue to produce more, we will put more heat resistant outfits out for sale.”
Carson started an applause and other people followed. They had no doubts about the jumpsuits. If Sunshine was involved, they knew it would work. With the bubble surrounding most of the area around them, many people were already planning to open businesses outside the wall or just venture outside.
The boxes were loaded into trucks under the careful but unnecessary watch of Ariel and his squad. Then, the trucks left.
“Did you know the nosy babies would be here?” Hades whispered to Sunshine as they walked into the command center of the third wall.
She shook her head. “I did not even know that they were involved in the jumpsuit project.”
“I did not even know about the project.” He whispered.
“Why?” She smiled. “Did you want to leave me a review?”
He laughed. “Well…you could use a color expansion. Why are they all blueish or greenish?”
She looked around the noisy busy room, stepped on the tips of her toes and whispered to him, “I actually have three types in gold, crimson and silver but I am saving it for the billionaires first. A girl’s gotta eat.”
Hades burst into laughter. He put a hand around her waist, ignoring the looks from the comms officers in the room. Slowly, he led Sunshine to her chair and pulled it out for her.
He stood behind her and they watched the monitors, offering advise and warnings to soldiers. One hour later, he sat down and leaned his head against her shoulder, falling asleep.
Another hour passed without incident, and the drones successfully finished their mission. Sunshine opened the wide-range channel. Her finger hovered over the transmit button for only a second before she pressed it.
“This is Sunshine Quinn. To all base managers, I am alerting you to an attack that is upon us. Inside the boxes delivered by the drones is a cream that will help us fight against what we believe is a targeted attack. I have noticed that some of you have already started opening the boxes.”
Simultaneously, all the base managers in various towns looked up and about, searching for the cameras which were watching them.
Other people also paused and looked up at the sky or simply stopped to listen.
Sunshine continued, “In there are flyers with information on the fever wasps which are coming. What they look like, how they move and operate. If you sight the swarm, stay indoors and lock your windows and doors.
At least until we prove successfully that the cream works. Make sure that you apply it. It will give you a chill and discomfort for five minutes but the body gets used to it.
We are going to raise a nearly invisible laser filament shield two meters outside the bubble shield and all walls. Keep yourselves and your children away from it because it is dangerous.
Of course, all areas with the filament will be marked carefully and soldiers will stand guard around to protect you. That said, welcome to another day of survival in the apocalypse.
Be strong, be prepared. Remember, the sun bows to no one and we bow to nothing.”
She cut the channel. The sound of the wind rushed in behind her words. Sunshine exhaled slowly, lowering the device.
Hades placed a hand on her back_ a silent reassurance she didn’t know she needed until it was there.
“Are you becoming a motivational speaker?” he asked, a light smile on his face.
She sighed. “Hope is a weapon we must sharpen.”
Across most territories, the reaction was immediate. The cream was passed around quickly; despite being told to wait for the sun to appear before using it, impatience was seen.
Parents hurried to rub it all over the bodies of their children, blocking out the sounds of their wails and cries as the cold seeped into their bones. Relief washed over them when the same children were laughing ten minutes later.
In fortress four, it was the same reaction. People trusted Sunshine more than a god now. If she told them all to move East, they would follow without question.
Flyers were unfolded, studied, whispered over. Doors began closing. The elderly were ushered back inside. Kids were gathered in tight groups and hurried into houses.
Others visited the market to stock up a week’s worth of supplies. People were preparing to stay completely indoors for a while.
But in Silverdale……Adam held the tin of cream between two fingers like it was a joke. “This?” he scoffed, smudging it in between his fingers. “This little thing is supposed to stop the so-called fever wasps that can kill us. Please.”
One of the guards frowned. “Sir, with respect_ Sunshine Quinn said_”
Adam cut him off. “Do you seriously not get it? Sunshine Quinn does not work for the government. Most of these boxes they deliver things in have the logo of the Quinn group. These people want to steal our base, our land and everything in it! How am I the only person that has a brain that works here! It is exhausting.”
“If this is actually true….” One guard whispered to another. “Then it is not such a bad thing. As long as we are safe and have full bellies, is it so bad?”
“I agree.” came another person’s response.
Adam frowned at them. “We cannot allow these small things like that bubble or this cream corrupt us into giving our home away. We need our independence. The superhumans we have are enough to protect you all.”
Residents around him exchanged looks somewhere between disbelief and irritation. One woman muttered, “Our independence will not matter when we die. It is better to be under those people if they give us supplies and protect us. Those frost stones would have killed us all without the bubble.”
“We need food, they can give it to us.” Someone shouted.
“If there are four more years of this hell waiting for us, it is better to join them.”
More voices were raised, demands to become part of Fortress four officially. The sounds, to Adam, were worse than the buzzing of ten thousand bees.
“Today I will prove that those people are up to no good.” Adam vowed.
