Chapter 389: The review.
It was coming to 11 p.m. but Hades and Sunshine were not just ready to sleep. They were working together to ensure that all would be ready for the fever wasp attack.
The system had delivered the cream in large boxes. Inside were sleek black tubes labeled in a foreign language which the system translated for Hades who didn’t understand.
While it explained, his eyes stared in wonder and admiration at his wife that could read alien language fluently.
“It says here that the expiry date is one year. Isn’t this too soon?” She complained. “If the fever wasps come again in five years that means we must purchase new cream again. This is not good, I want to leave a review for the company and it is going to be a harsh one.”
Hades rolled his eyes. He gasped suddenly and reached for hand that was about to open a tube of cream.
“What?” she asked.
“You left reviews on all the products and services of the Quinn group you used, didn’t you?” He asked.
Her eyes widened and her voice became sharper. “No, I didn’t.”
Hades scoffed. “Ha! Sunny 88, that is your email. You have a football jersey with the number 88 on the back. You complained about everything Quinn group related.”
She twisted her lips. “No, I didn’t.”
Hades laughed. “I had a file on Sunny 88. Most complaints from that anonymous user were about our prices and me. One has always stuck with me.”
Sunshine looked away from him.
He grabbed her chin and turned her face back, gazing into her eyes. “We launched a new coffee machine and advertised it as something that would warm hearts, one cup at a time. You left a review saying the machine was as cold and arrogant as me, its creator. You said if people wanted to drink coffee that tasted like overpriced disappointment and ego, they could go ahead and buy it. But if they were wise, they should save their money.”
Sunshine grimaced.
“That review went viral.” He said.
Sunshine giggled.
“You cost me thirty million dollars.” He frowned.
“Well, you left me a review on how my floor mopping skills were subpar. The butler gave me a stern warning and halved my salary.” She bit back. “I was put on toilet scrubbing duty for a month.”
Hades scoffed. “So it was revenge. And here I thought it was an insightful review basing on experience.” He shook his head. “I always knew you were a hater Purple.”
She rolled her eyes. “That coffee maker hissed and burned my hand. I wrote nothing but the truth.” She claimed and twisted a cap open. “Oh look, its the cream.” She said a little too loudly.
The cream inside was white-green, like crushed mint. She sniffed it.
Nothing.
“I don’t smell anything.”
Hades sniffed it. “No smell. Good. That means nobody will complain about the smell like they did with the gel.”
Sunshine rubbed a dab on her wrist. It absorbed instantly, leaving her skin cool. “So this scares off fever wasps?” she said. “I like it already, it feels like I am rolling around in snow.” She thought that maybe she could wear it the next time she went on the space ship repair….perhaps mandibles would stay away from her.
When Hades rubbed it on his wrist, he shivered. It was cold, like an ice bath. “This will take some getting used to. It was probably made this way to help the infected cool down the fever faster.”
She nodded. “Wise aliens.’
Next, they opened the boxes holding the laser shielding filaments. Sunshine was confused, it wasn’t what she expected. Inside were small metallic balls—smooth, deep silver, each the size of a plum. They shimmered like they held lightning inside.
Hades picked one up, turning it in his palm. “This is the shield?”
The system’s voice echoed in the room. [Those spheres release the filament. When activated, they fly into the allocated position and unwind the laser mesh around the territory.]
Sunshine lifted one gently. It felt warm, tingly even. “Is this the remote control device?” A small flat device sat at the bottom of the box. A single orange button sat in the middle.
Hades picked it up and tested the weight. “Simple enough.”
Sunshine stepped back, looking at the metallic spheres and the insect cream_alien solutions to the watcher threat. And somehow, against all odds, they had both.
Tomorrow, they would deploy the filaments.
Tomorrow, they would coat everyone’s body in the cream. Tomorrow, they would begin to get ready for an attack.
Sunshine exhaled. “We should go to bed now. Tomorrow, we continue with our task of saving humanity.”
Hades nodded, eyes glowing with determination. “Then we’ll be up before sunrise.”
They exchanged tired smiles_ fear in their bones, love in their eyes, and a battle in their future. And somewhere outside the bubble shield, the watchers pranced, restless, anticipating something.
*********
By the time Rori arrived at the house to watch the kids in the morning, Sunshine and Hades had already been awake for hours. They were fueled by coffee and tension.
Hades kept checking his wristwatch, and Sunshine kept pacing from the living room to the hallway and back again, her boots thudding softly against the floor.
Rori took one look at their stiff shoulders and pale faces and knew that something was wrong. She had learned not to ask questions so she just looked at hem with worry in her eyes. “Be careful out there,” she murmured while taking off her coat.
“We always are mom, do not worry.” Hades said, hugging her quickly. Sunshine bent down to tuck stray curls behind Castiel’s sleeping face and kissed White’s forehead softly.
The couple rushed out of the house. Outside, frost stones still fell from the sky, but it was nothing like the night before. Now they came even more gently_ hesitant little beads that tinkled like falling glass.
Off to the training field they drove.
People had already gathered, going through some exercises under Carson’s leadership. As soon as he saw the couple, he stopped and run up to them
His expression flickered with relief and fear.
“Did you fill them in?” Sunshine asked.
Carson shook his head. “No, I just told them to prepare to take a trip outside. The comms officers are ready. Drones too. But…” He looked at the bubble above them. “I don’t think we have much time. The frost stones are slowing…by afternoon or late evening….they will stop falling completely.”
Hades followed his gaze. “We’ll work fast. No mistakes today.”
When the trucks arrived, soldiers hopped out carrying boxes of equipment. Sunshine directed them immediately, pointing toward the edge of the training field. “Place them there. Neat rows.”
The soldiers obeyed, their movements sharp but tense. Everyone could feel something pressing down on them_ an invisible countdown.
Once everyone had gathered around, Sunshine stepped forward and raised her voice. “Listen up. We have intel that an attack is coming.”
A wave of uneasy murmurs rolled across the field.
Someone_ too young, too curious_ lifted his hand nervously. “Ma’am… how do we know the intel is accurate?” He was too nervous his bod was visibly shaking.
Before Sunshine could respond, Major Elio let out an explosive sneeze that startled half the soldiers. He sniffed loudly, looked at the recruit, and scowled.
“How, in all the madness of this world, are there still people asking the madam stupid questions? She said it_ so it’s true. Learn.”
A few soldiers snorted. One elbowed the rookie in sympathy. Even Hades cracked a smile, he stepped forward, hands in his pockets, voice steady but gentle.
“Look_ whether it’s a false alarm or not, being ready is what matters. We’ve all seen what watchers can do. No one here wants to find out what is coming. This is the real deal. As soon as the sun appears, so will danger.”
