Chapter 383: The watchers return.
Soon, the other repairmen drifted into the snack lounge, drawn by the conflict between Sunshine and Nine. Word of their possible physical clash was spreading faster than sparks of fire from their equipment while they were working.

But Sunshine had no idea of this and she simply concluded that they had all come out to fill their stomachs with nourishment.

There was no physical confrontation and Sunshine stuck to singing and dancing, while popping her chips. And Nine, he watched her like a spy, furiously scribbling notes on all the crimes he thought she had committed.

“Must you do this?” Vortan eventually turned off the music. Not because he had a problem with Sunshine’s singing but because Nine kept bothering him. “You know he is testy.”

Sunshine shrugged. “I am not the cause of trouble, he is. He threatened to sue me for humming. If he does, I am going to counter sue him for withholding knowledge about the snack lounge. May the best repairman win.”

She looked at the time, there were thirty minutes to the end of her shift. It was time to explore and see what other hidden gems were in the spaceship.

By the time Sunshine returned to the real world, she was craving for real food, something heavy and hot that could fill her stomach. So, she got some per-cooked meals from her space, planning to heat them up.

But as soon as she opened the bedroom door, the basket in which she had placed the food was taken from her hands by Hades.

He appeared to have been waiting for her outside the door for a long time.

“Just the woman I need to see.” He took her hands.

“Food first.” Sunshine drew her hands back. “I am so hungry I could eat a bear.”

White’s ears twitched. The little cub had been on his way to demand for coconut bean honey. He turned back and returned to the living room. He had enough milk and fish crackers to last through the day.

Sunshine chuckled as she watched the white fur disappearing into the couch.

“He is gone.” She told Hades.

“Lauren opened a sandwich shop near the first wall gate. You can see it if you stand next to the kitchen window.” Hades informed her. “Do you want to go and check it out?”

Sunshine agreed without hesitation. All she wanted was to eat something filling and sandwiches could do the job. They left the house hand in hand, walking to the sandwich shop.

The shop was the size of a two bedroom apartment with only six tables. It was well decorated and very bright. Lauren was obviously a woman of means and money because the hastily put together shop was rather well decorated.

It even had potted plants and flowers, sold at a high price in the base because greenery was now rare.

Sunshine whistled when she saw the prices of the sandwiches. Between forty to four thousand dollars. “No wonder this place is not packed.”

Hades pulled out a chair for her. “Lauren does not lack the money, she is just doing it for fun.”

The menu had milkshakes too and ice cream. It made Sunshine raise her brows curiously. “Is she competing with Sheldon?”

Hades shrugged. “I would say no, but who knows when it comes to that group.”

The sandwiches were actually tasty but not worth the extravagant pricing. The milkshakes were lacking in sweetness, which was not surprising because sugar was a controlled substance.

But the meal was satisfactory and the moment was warm. Hades made fun of Sunshine for inhaling her food like someone who hadn’t eaten in five days, and she teased him for smudging mustard on his chin just like Castiel did when he ate sandwiches. They laughed as they talked about Lisha and Tracy’s issue this morning.

When they parted ways, Hades jogged backward a few steps, pointing at her while reminding her of the plans that night. “Don’t forget the extended family dinner tonight! Mom will kill me if we show up late again, especially because it is grandpa’s birthday.”

Sunshine smiled and assured him that they would be there earlier than anyone else.

Her plans were to spend the rest of the day napping. But she didn’t make it far before she felt familiar claws gripping her shoulder.

“Zulu…..I cannot say that I am happy to see you after you catalyzed the Bob situation this morning.”

The parrot perched upright like she owned Sunshine’s shoulders_her talons hooking into the jacket, her head cocked proudly as if the shoulder was a throne and Sunshine the servant that carried it.

“Oh forget it purple, I should be the one doing all the condemning and not you. You ruined it all…. just like you usually do.” Zulu squeaked, disappointment could be detected from the parrot’s voice.

Sunshine narrowed her eyes. “Unbelievable! You need to stop inciting violence for fun.”

“I do not!” Zulu puffed her chest, scandalized. “I only encourage justice. And Tracy and her little flock of diamond-waving peacocks deserved it.”

Sunshine closed her eyes. “What are you even talking about?” Who were the diamond waving peacocks?

“That Tracy Kingsley walks around like she owns shares in MY base. She and her rich girl friends. We should have let the watchers have them for dinner Suni.” Zulu shook her small head like she was disappointed.

Sunshine ignored the fact that Zulu had referred to fortress four as her base. “Zulu, leave those women alone. Do not go out there and start unnecessary trouble.”

“I cannot promise that.” The parrot released a laugh, one that promised that it was going to be causing a lot of trouble.

Sunshine shook her head. “I do not think that after today Lisha will want to work with you any longer.”

“What! what did I do? I was on her side! Don’t get me started on all her shortcomings. Lisha is weak, soft. A true disappointment. I mean honestly, if she cries one more time over something trivial, I’ll pluck out my own feathers just to create a rope and hang myself. And as for that show…I am the show and the show is me, I doubt anyone would listen anymore if I am not there. Take a poll and see who the people’s choice of host is.”

They passed two soldiers and a dog; Zulu insulted all three with shocking efficiency. Which was not a surprise.

When Sunshine reached the main door of her building, she stopped dead. She could still hear Zulu complaining about someone’s haircut.

“Bye Zulu,” Sunshine said. “You are not coming in. Absolutely not. I need silence. I need quiet. Go bug your brother Nicodemus.”

Zulu ruffled her feathers. “You’re irritable more than usual purple, I was not planning to come in today…not today.”

Zulu glanced at the sparks on the bubble. “But the watchers are back…you wouldn’t believe what they talked about today.”

Sunshine froze, her heart gave one sharp startled thump. She could not see a trace of them on the bubble. And Elio, he was on a break, sleeping in his house so it was likely that he had not seen them either.

“We did not notice that they are back” she said slowly. “What are they up to? Did they say something new? Did_”

Zulu lifted one feather and shook it side to side like a disappointed mother. “Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. I’ll tell you over dinner,” she declared grandly.

“What dinner?” Sunshine asked.

“The one Hades reminded us not to be late to, obviously.”

Sunshine blinked. “No. No no no NO. Hades was talking to me. Not you. It’s a small, intimate family dinner. You are NOT invited.”

Zulu twirled in the air like a ballerina with wings. “I’ll see you later Purple!” she chirped.

Then she vanished upward, leaving Sunshine staring at the empty space. She couldn’t even threaten the bird properly—Zulu was, unfortunately, currently the most important and informative living creature on the base.

“Why couldn’t she be useless?” Sunshine muttered. “I could have found a reason to clip her wings.”

Sighing, she walked into the building, straight to the elevator and then home. She joined White on the sofa, hugging the bear.

She tried to sleep but her mind was the opposite of calm. Zulu’s words remained prominent. The watchers are definitely planning something but what? “What are they planning this time?” she whispered to herself.

She thought back to all their past attacks—coordinated, gruesome, unpredictable. “It has to be an attack…. but what kind?

She couldn’t push aside the unease. Something inside her twisted_ instinct, maybe. Or fear dressed up as a warning.

Sunshine was also worried about the family birthday dinner, if Zulu showed up, chaos was going to follow.
