Chapter 380: One lost cat.
[Host….]

“I am a great mother, right?” She asked the system.

There were a few seconds of silence.

[Preparing for evacuation.]

She gasped. “System, what are you thinking? I still have time and there is so much to see.”

[To see or kidnap?]

Sunshine frowned. “Who said anything about kidnapping? If you are thinking that I want to steal the baby mermaid, you are wrong. I was going to ask you if it was possible for me to swim outside and take a picture with the mermaid baby for my children to see.”

In the silence that followed, she could hear the silent relieved sigh of the system.

The pod continued forward, venturing into a more crowded area.

[Let me tell you why kidnapping a baby Aqualith would be a bad idea.] The system said.

Sunshine rolled her eyes. “Kidnapping any baby is a wrong idea.”

[You might be thinking, what is wrong with taking one, the Levias sea is full of them anyway.]

“I am not thinking that.” She said flatly.

[Aqualith’s are apex predators.] The system continued anyway. [If you think a crocodylus is scary, try a creature that can blend among your human species perfectly, one whose eyes can hypnotize. One whose voice can shatter the walls of your base. Aqualith’s are rich…vastly rich and very community oriented. You steal their baby, and they will hunt you across galaxies, oceans. You will wake up one day to find glowing eyes inside of your toilet.”

Sunshine chuckled. “Okay, that’s dramatic.”

The system added, [And the babies may be cute, but they have poison under their skins. They are bathed in coral fruit juice which lures prey and makes them unable to think. You think they are the prey? No, you are the prey. One whiff and its tiny teeth are ripping your neck out.]

Sunshine shuddered. “I won’t be taking that picture I guess.”

[Good, because galactic laws on kidnapping are very strict. Aqualith’s are protected species. Kidnapping one is a death sentence. You are fed to the very creatures you tried to steal, and they show no mercy.]

Sunshine pictured herself being lowered into the water while thousands of baby Aqualith’s chomped their teeth, waiting to rip her apart. “That’s…harsh.” If the goal of the system was to make her realize that the creatures were not adorable, it had succeeded.

Never would she voluntarily approach one.

Seemingly satisfied, the system moved on to helping her stealthily collect edible and useful things from the sea. It described the trading hub of the sea, where they were and the most sold items there.

It was busy, vibrant, chaotic. Beyond the market, young Glacians and Aqualith’s were being trained to ride wave-gliders shaped like giant clams. A group of children splashed in and out of the waves while blowing horn-fish that sounded off like badly tuned trumpets.

Off to the side, a tall creature with two slitted tails sat awkwardly on a crate of sea flowers, leading a group of adults that were diverting heavy tides away from the market.

Unexpectedly, a teenage male Aqualith swam up to the pod, circled around like he could see it, then he flickered water which blinded her view for a second. Sunshine laughed_ amused by what had just happened. She watched the boy laugh as he swam away.

Sunshine shook her head, then continued her collection run_ gathering more fish, pearls and one stubborn turtle- fish that refused to be scooped until she bribed it with a shiny treat. She planned to give the turtle to Ariel as a pet.

At last, with her catches secure, and the ocean stretching wide and wild around her, she whispered,

“I had fun, the extra coins were worth it.” Her eyes were fixed on the timer, only a few seconds were left before she was pulled back into her world.

Sunshine materialized back into her world in a swirl of warm air from the space, the pod disappeared the moment she stepped out of it.

She moved to the living section of the space where the new aquarium rested like a glowing vault. Inside, the two young spikers darted around, swirling and weaving between the floating plants like mischievous eels. Their bodies shimmered faintly in the water, spikes still small but sharp enough to warn any finger that dared to draw near.

But the adult spiker….

It barely moved.

Instead of gliding like its young ones, it lay curled at the bottom of the tank near a giant stone, its pale, armored skin rising and falling slowly.

Sunshine’s heart dropped.

“System,” she murmured, leaning closer, “Is it…..too injured? will it survive?”

[It is injured but it will survive. The adult spiker requires rest] the system replied calmly. [Its wounds will heal naturally. Additionally, the tranquilizer dosage you used was extremely high. Sedation effects will linger.]

Sunshine winced. “I didn’t know how much of a dosage I had to use….”

[If the spiker had not been injured, the dosage would not have been a problem.] the system said, surprisingly gentle. [All you have to do is wait until it recovers.]

Sunshine breathed out in relief. “That is good news then.”

But something else caught her eyes_ something orange glinting inside the robotic syringe arms attached to the side of the aquarium.

Her breath hitched.

“Is that_”

[Yes], the system interrupted. [The substance in the containment syringes is the Levias marrow extract. You should store it in glass vials, in a cool environment not exceeding twenty-five degrees Celsius, until you obtain the final ingredient needed to synthesize the reddix pill.

Sunshine jumped up for joy, squealing loudly. She had it. She finally had the marrow extract.

A spark of hope surged through her_ bright, wild, electric. She was almost done with the task which had seemed impossible.

She checked on the fish in the pond, and bought another aquarium for the turtle, taking it out of the space.

She placed it on the table and got the shiny pebbles from the Levias sea, coral, flowers and other plants. But before she could decorate the aquarium, the signal of the broadcasting radio came through.

“BREAKING NEWS, BREAKING NEWS!” shrieked the unmistakable voice of Zulu.

Just at the sound of her voice, some residents began to laugh outside in anticipation for something ridiculous.

“DISASTER ON THE BASE! TRAGEDY! TEARS! AND CONFUSION! The beloved Bob_ yes, the fat lazy mutated cat with claws the size of a T-Rex and attitude of a retired warlord_ has been REPORTED MISSING!”

Sunshine let out a loud sigh, she went on to look for the glass vials. This was not an emergency like Zulu was screaming.

Zulu continued dramatically, “His owner, Lisha_ poor Lisha_ is in tears. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, REAL tears! She is now in full BEAST MODE. I repeat, BEAST MODE!”

Sunshine flinched at the screech.

Zulu was not done, she paused, then spoke again. “I have looked outside the window and detected no movement. Where are the alarms? I do not understand why you all are not running into hiding…oh well I guess you want to test Lisha’s wrath.”

Sunshine rolled her eyes.

Zulu coughed and then continued. “In case you all forgot what Bob looks like: picture a chubby old man trapped in a cat’s body, with legs too short, claws too long, and the personality of a spoiled emperor who pays NO rent in this apocalypse!”

Sunshine dragged a hand down her face.

“That said, if you do find the beast, shoot first and explain later.” Zulu declared.

The vial dropped out of Sunshine’s hand, and it was smashed to pieces. Zulu screeched like she was being strangled and someone in the studio screamed the parrot’s name.
