Chapter 379: What lives in the sea?
With the spikers safely stored away, Sunshine intended to return to her world and then report for duty on the spaceship_ but a thought struck her. She hadn’t explored even a quarter of the Levias sea. The opportunities to see the other worlds were rare. And, she still had time. An hour and three minutes.
Wouldn’t it be a shame to waste it?
This chance might never come gain, who knows. She thought to herself. Maybe someday the Levias sea would be closed off to her.
“System, give me a tour of the sea. All territories that you can show me within the time I have left,” she requested. “Choose places where I can get some edible things to return with.”
[As you wish. You can also extend your tour beyond the time you have left.]
She smiled.
[For a fee of course, 150 merit coins.]
“Oh come on!” Sunshine grimaced. “Why must you always charge extra fees?”
[Then forget it. Maneuver on your own and see how many good places you can find.]
Sunshine never dreamed that she would be blackmailed by her system. Or was it threatened? She could not decided which. All she knew was that if she wanted benefits, the system had to get benefits,
“Fine, add another hour.” she grumbled.
[Initiating guided exploration.]
The pod angled downward and glided like a silent silver blade through the deep.
[Welcome host to the water world of Levias. It is the sea of wonders and abnormalities which are only found here and nowhere else. Now sit back, relax and enjoy yourself.] The system narrated calmly, it’s voice echoing around her like a museum guide.
Sunshine was unsure how to react to what it was doing. She thought it would just pop in and out of places, not give her a full tour package.
[On your right is the Bloom ridge] the system announced. Fields of neon corals pulsed rhythmically, expanding and shrinking like the were breathing. [These corals produce translucent, orb like pod fruits which are filled with sweet nectar. The taste is intoxicating.]
Sunshine prepared for extraction. How could she not want such a fruit? But the competition was high as the corals were surrounded by fish of different varieties.
She activated vacuum settings on the pod, pulling the corals and fish inside the living space.
[When too many fish gather like you have witnessed, the coral snaps shut, digesting the unlucky prey.] The system added.
Sunshine frowned. “Does everything in this sea just try to kill or eat each other?”
[Survival for the fittest, be it plants or animals.]
Ahead of the pod, massive winged fish flashed by like shadows drifting peacefully. The system continued, [These are sky drifters. They use light manipulation to mask their presence. The wings are useless when it comes to flying. They use them to exaggerate their size and frighten predators.]
Sunshine pressed her face to the glass as the pod drifted teleported to another location, still in the same sea. It appeared to be near the surface of the sea. The water was clearer.
Then she saw something familiar_ and blinked hard.
The insignia of universal repairmen.
It was their uniform, worn by what appeared to be a robot. It looked like Tank in some ways. The robot was hovering over a familiar looking gadget. She recognized it as a speaker like the one she had fixed once.
But this one was bigger, a more advanced model than the one that she had repaired.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Sunshine whispered. “It can be done this way! Why didn’t I repair that speaker from here?”
[You had not yet reached the level acceptable to access the Levias sea.] The system reminded her.
“Oh! I completely forgot.” She said, watching as the repairman finished. He gave the speaker a firm slap_ as if encouraging it to behave_ and then flashed away in a beam of light.
[Repair efficiency: ninety- eight percent. To think that he has already learned the ins and outs of a product that was only introduced to the world two days ago. Such a wonderful repairman.] The system told her proudly
“Aren’t you my system?] Sunshine grumbled. It sounded like it was salivating over another repairman like a dog at a meat buffet. It had never praised her like that.
[Is that jealousy I detect in your voice Host?]
The question raised defensive responses from Sunshine. “Of course not.” she replied strongly. “Focus on the tour.”
The pod continued its long arc, pushing eastward into another territory that was different from the rest of the sea. For one, it showed signs of civilization. Structures appeared in the distance_ no, not structures. Statues. And they were huge.
Carved into the sea floor, some were seated on giant, tall pillars, rising like mountains sculpted with divine precision. They were towering figures of beings half fish, half dragon, half eel. Their spines spiraled upward like coiled lightning frozen in stone, their jaws wide enough to swallow a house hole.
Some had human like faces and others were in full animal form.
Sunshine felt her blood cool she whispered, “The spiraled spine caller…..”
She remembered the name too clearly. She had heard about it from the system and found its records in the repairman guide to not fixing divine beings worshiped in any universe.
[You are now entering Glacian territory] The system shared.
The pod halted abruptly.
She frowned, “Why did we stop?”
[Glacians possess sensory arrays capable of detecting energy distortions. Even in invisibility mode, this pod may be identified as a foreign intrusion and attacked. Proceeding further risks alerting them.]
Sunshine stared ahead at the shimmering boundary, where an icy blue light rippled like a barrier. She could only watch from afar, gazing at what she could see from where she was.
The Glacians world unfolded before her like an underwater modern empire crossed with futuristic legend. Grand towers spiraled upward like living ice, their surfaces etched with glowing vines. Walkways of transparent crystal tubes connected paths, forming roads.
Sleek patrol vessels glided silently, their hulls made of shimmering alloy that bent light around them.
Large platforms rose and fell slowly outside the barrier, elevating warriors in armor textured like frozen storms.
Even at a distance, Sunshine felt the weight of an advanced civilization_ disciplined, powerful and most of all ancient. It had existed for a very long time.
“It’s really beautiful….” she whispered, unable to look away.
[You should see the inside.]
Sunshine laughed. She was not brave enough to test their boundaries. Repairmen were often kidnapped if they found themselves in the wrong territory.
“Maybe someday.” She replied. She did not want to spend forever trapped there, repairing weapons and gadgets for sea creatures.
She turned away reluctantly as the pod retreated from the forbidden territory. When she finally broke through to the surface, sunlight greeted her. But she was not done _ not yet. She wanted to see everything above the waves.
The pod floated slowly. The glassy water reflected the sky like liquid metal. Above it, the alien world felt wider, brighter, warmer.
Then she began to see them, dwellers of the Levias sea and other visitors.
[There are different people that come to the surface_ Glacians, Raptans, Aqualith’s and many others.]
The Glacians were a mix of humans and mer creatures. They appeared humanoid enough but their proportions were different. Elongated arms, lean torsos, skin that shimmered like jellyfish veils. They even had webbed fingers that retracted and detracted.
They had split tails that trailed behind them like ribbons. But the tails could fuse into one sleek one.
“So Glacian’s are basically two tailed mermaids and mermen.” She said.
[You mean Aqualith’s.]
Sunshine nodded. Mermaids and mermen were called Aqualith’s in this world. Her eyes widened with childlike innocence when she saw one.
“System look, it’s a mermaid.” She squealed. “And a little one.” She clapped her hands, gazing at a grown mermaid and young one, swimming to the surface. The adult was teaching the young one how to burst through the surface and spiral in the air.
[If your next question is how we can take the little one back, I advise you to think twice. One bounty on your head is enough.]
Sunshine pressed her face to the glass, eyeing the little mermaid with more interest.
