Chapter 376: Barking dogs.
It was day two of the frost stone shower, the size had reduced to that of peas which was a signal that soon the shower would stop completely. The residents of fortress four continued to treat it like a vacation, they lounged under the safety of the bubble, watching the small stones bounce off the bubble-like playful sparks.
They spent hours laughing, relaxing_ and pretending for a moment that the world was not dying outside. More snack stands had popped up in different areas of the base.
Hades had provided projectors for the people to watch movies outdoor. They were played day and night, and the residents were loving it.
Sunshine was busy as usual; she and her family had also joined others in treating it like a vacation. Since it was longer severely cold outside, they even spent the night on the roof top garden pretending like they had gone camping.
Hades had taken the time to set the whole thing up with Ariel’s help. They had bickered over nearly everything with Ariel accusing his father of not knowing what he was doing. The battle was solved by Sunshine and Tank who stepped in to construct the perfect camp.
Tank even made little metal stars and hang them up on strings. This morning, White had tried to swing from the strings and torn them down. He and Castiel were not on speaking terms again because of this.
Sunshine was sure they would be cordial again before dinner.
But for the moment, they were snatching stars from each other. Castiel was saying “mine” and White was making a similar squeak.
Lounging on the chair, Sunshine watched them through her sunglasses, sipping banana flavored milk from a straw.
She almost coughed when White raised his paws that were folded into fists. Castiel did the same thing.
“Mom, aren’t you going to stop them.” Ariel asked her.
Sunshine stood up. They both knew neither the bear nor the boy would be doing any real fighting. They were barking dogs. “Nope. Do me a favor and tell them that if they fight, there will be no milk or cartoons for a week.” She kissed him on the cheek loudly.
She waved at Hades who was enduring another lecture from Earl on how to string worms the right way when fishing. The advice was solid, but the trouble was that they were playing a fishing video game. One click of a button and the worms hooked themselves!
“This is ridiculous.” Hades groaned.
Sunshine shook her head and left the rooftop. She changed into a fresh set of clothes and drove to the repair building with the intention of inspecting the vehicles that were being repaired and those that were being upgraded.
Tank was there, having left home earlier than her. He was watching the workers closely making changes when something was not put in the right place. He was taking the job seriously, warning those who were destructed by Zulu’s commentary on why rich humans were worse than cats, his nemesis as everyone knew.
“The other day, I saw Jon Kingsley asking his servants to bring him the imported glacier water. What is that even? Guess what buddy, glaciers are either frozen or poisoned. You gotta slam it with the rest of us here that are drinking recycled urine water.”
Lisha gasped. “Zulu, we are not drinking recycled urine. Where did you hear that? To our listeners, disregard what she has said.”
“Regard it.” Zulu squawked. “And I know where Jon keep his gold by the way. For a fee, you can know too. I tried to borrow one bar last night and he was mean about it. He even took my crackers. The rich are always stealing from the poor.”
People laughed.
“You tried to steal his gold Zulu, stop turning black into white.” Lisha cried out.
“Oh yeah, prove it.” Zulu challenged.
People giggled.
Tank cleared his throat, and the giggling was minimized but it did not die completely. As for Sunshine, she was laughing out loud as she strolled to her office.
But her steps faltered and the laughter died the moment she turned the corner. Sheldon was sitting in a high golden velvet chair like a king with a fat cigar in his hand. The cigar smoke coiling around him in luxurious rings. The two personal bodyguards standing behind him did not seem bothered by all of that.
Sunshine could not have been more displeased to see a guest.
“Oh, for the love of God.” She muttered under her breath.
He stood when she approached, plastering a smile on his face that was meant to be charming. Instead, it made her want to roll her eyes hard enough to sprain something.
“Suni_”
“If you call me that one more time” Sunshine cut in coldly. “I will personally glue your lips together.”
He blinked, his smile cracking before he reassembled it. “Mrs. Quinn,” he corrected with a low bow. “I simply came to_”
“I know exactly why you are here,” Sunshine snapped. “To talk about that ridiculous, insane, brain rotted plan of yours to build a mall in here.”
Sheldon straightened, offended. “Excuse me? Why use such harsh language?”
“My husband must have made it clear to you.” She said, stepping closer. “But I will tell you again, it will not happen.”
His mouth opened but she didn’t not give him a chance.
“I do not want to hear anything about that.” She said sharply. “No matter what excuse you have I am a permanent no. Not today. Not next week. Not even next year. And I do not care how many judges you bribe or bully, some decisions….like this one for instance, are above them.”
Sheldon’s eyes widened. “I did not bribe_”
“Don’t deny this Sheldon, it is a waste of time.” Sunshine waved a dismissive hand. “If we wanted a mall in here, my husband has enough money for the job. The fact that we haven’t built one means we don’t want it. If you push this idea again, you and your precious corrupt judges will be escorted off this base.” Her voice was ice. Controlled. Dangerous.
Sheldon stiffened, offended to his core_ suddenly Sunshine Quinn was not attractive to him anymore. She was a power hungry control freak, the kind of woman he hated the most.
But he smiled to hide his thoughts. “Mrs Quinn what you accuse me of is preposterous. Yes I want to construct a mall but not without Hades’ approval. He said that I can construct it in one of the towns because it will fetch more profits and I agree.” He lied without shame.
She scoffed. “Even then, if you want to build something on any of my territories, follow protocols. Submit a request, ask for land allocation, pay construction tax. You are not getting any short cuts because you have money. Those houses you bought in the third wall do not belong to you, they are mine. Your money will be refunded.”
Sheldon clenched his teeth.
Sunshine leaned forward, eyes narrowing. “And if you give my husband as so much as a headache…” her voice dropped low, deadly. “One complaint from him and I will break your hands that seem to be touching all the wrong people and places. I swear to God, the day you are arrested for sexual harassment, I will cut your balls off. No, I will freeze your private parts and shatter them.”
Sheldon swallowed, visibly. He knew she was in charge, but it was even more clear now.
He crossed his hands over his crotch. “I can assure you that I would never force a woman to do anything she does not want. I am good looking and rich, women are always throwing themselves at me. Ask….”
“I am not interested in asking anything.” She cut him off coldly. “I just want you to know that I am watching you. You have some value but if you cross me or cross the line, there will be consequences. You are a smart man when it comes to business and making deals. I hope that you will be smart going forward.”
