Chapter 371: Like son, like mother.
When the repairmen were given a break, Sunshine started her private tour of the ship. It was a marvel, something straight out of fiction. Corridors curved twisted like rivers, shifting so much that it was easy to get lost if one was unfamiliar with the path they desired to take.
The walls could talk, commenting on everything like the way she was walking to recommended visiting areas and places where the ship had been. Unfortunately, she did not have much time to sit down and listen to their stories.
And the concept of talking walls unnerved her. What was privacy in their presence?
Sunshine’s curiosity led her deeper into the ship than what had been recommended. She found herself in places that had not been allocated for repair. Like a garden in the vessel, deep in its belly. It was filled with unfamiliar plants, fruits and flowers.
Some blossomed like lamps and others dangled, showing off fruit that had impossible colors. Like the pears which were ultraviolet, invisible to the ordinary eye. One looked like a suspiciously forbidden glowing apple.
“Talk about a garden of Eden.” She muttered.
She plucked one of the pears and took a bite. Sweetness burst on her tongue followed by a fizzle. It was like tasting honey mixed with bubbles and lightning.
Sunshine giggled and reached for the apple.
[Host, perhaps you should inquire from me before digesting unknown produce like this. Not everything in here is meant for human consumption.]
Sunshine bit into the pear again. Juice dribbled on her chin, and she wiped it away with her hand. “I am relaxed and daring because I have you.” She looked around, wondering if someone would notice if she took some fruits back.
[That will be considered theft, the very thing you advised your bear not to do. There is a saying on your world, like mother like son. Or is it the opposite, like son like mother?]
“I think its daughter.” She spun, heading for the exit and abandoning the idea of taking some fruit for now. Maybe she would return after getting the necessary permission.
Just as she reached the entrance to the garden, the insectoid repairman found her. His mandibles were clicking loudly in disapproval. “You are not supposed to be here.”
Sunshine smiled. “I lost my way.”
“Vortan says you should fix the frequency nodes.” He said.
She nodded. Vortan was the feline, she had heard the others call him that. They all seemed to be familiar with each other. “So, how do you know Vortan?” she asked.
The insectoid did not respond. He brought her to where she was stationed and flew off. Sunshine noticed that she would be working alone so she turned on her music and spun a wrench in her hands. “You make me do too much labor…..” she started singing.
Unknown to her, the frequency nodes were like giant stereos, broadcasting through the ship. Inside and outside, repairmen stiffened or laughed.
A few held back the insectoid that was shrieking something about Sunshine tempting fate.
“Is she trying to say something to me as the supervisor?” Vortan asked himself.
A debate rose among the repairmen, an analysis into the song she was singing.
The system groaned, but it did not stop her.
Later, when she was clocking out with a bag full of fruits from Vortan, she noticed the various looks from her colleagues. Some were tense, some smiled at her and others shook their heads, as if she had done something unbelievable.
“We did not give you too much work, right?” Vortan asked her.
Sunshine shook her head. “It was less than I expected and quite easy.”
Vortan sighed in relief as he sent her off. What Sunshine was unaware of was that repairmen loved to sue their council for small things especially on council related jobs like this one. Clashes were always inevitable when too many repairmen gathered for the same job.
It was like having too many cooks in the kitchen.
Vortan liked Sunshine, he was rooting for her. And he liked her little pop songs; they were catchy and easy to sing along. Some repairmen were just uptight because they considered it a sacred occupation.
Sunshine’s sunny carefree attitude and famous cheapness was offensive to them.
“Is everyone always this serious?” She asked Vortan.
He nodded.
Sunshine shuddered.
He looked at his watch, one which Sunshine very much wanted to take a closer look at. “Your job is not finished but the scheduled five hours have expired. You will be expected to return tomorrow and all the days that follow until the job is finished. It will take at least a week so clear your schedule.”
Sunshine shrugged. “It is not like I have much going on anyway. But can I choose when to clock in? Like a day shift, afternoon and night shift kind of thing.”
Vortan nodded. “That will be for the best. Inform me daily on what time you will be showing up so that we….err….avoid clashes.”
“You mean mandibles.” She said, sarcastically.
Vortan grimaced. “His name is Nine.”
Sunshine raised her eyebrows. “Like the number!”
Vortan’s whiskers twitched. “Isn’t your name Sunshine?”
She nodded once. “Point made. That said, I know that he called me an it, the walls told me.”
Vortan opened his mouth, exposing his canine teeth. “You…’
“Called him mandibles.” She cut in. “I was being petty and I apologize. That said, I bid you farewell now.” She stepped into the door.
Five seconds after she left, Nine appeared next to Vortan, mandibles clicking rapidly. “Where is it? I heard from the walls that it insulted my dashing mandibles.”
Vortan closed his eyes, growling softly. He could not decide who was more infuriating between Sunshine and Nine. What he did know was that one of them would be the reason as to why a lawsuit would be filed with the council during this week.
There was a small possibility that he would be one suing the repairmen for mental distress.
He opened his eyes, glaring at the walls. They were shimmering a vibrant blue, swirling like a relaxed ocean on a good day. “Could you gossip a little less?”
The walls vibrated and the expected response echoed. “No.”
Meanwhile, Sunshine was already home, reading a note that Cathy had left for her on the door. It said that Nimo was sick and stuck in bed at her place. Worried for her friend, she got a suitcase and packed snacks, drinks, fruits and alien medicines.
Dragging the case behind her, she pulled open the front door only to run into the boys and Hades, returning from lunch.
They took one look at the suitcase and Castiel burst into tears.
