Chapter 364: Unexpected attack on relief trucks.
“I am already stepping on it.” O’Toole shouted pushing harder.

The tires skidded once, caught traction, then sped up the incline as if it was a race against time itself. The sky above had darkened further, the air tightening as if the world itself braced itself for what was coming.

Sunshine looked at the sky and bubble, not even one watcher could be seen. They were either hiding in the mist, or they had retreated to a safe place. If the watchers did not want to be caught outside in such weather, who were the humans to dare?

Within minutes they were safe and sound inside the walls of the base. A moderate sound of a siren was going off. Through the speakers, comms officer Jennifer Bride was informing residents of the changes in the weather.

Lisha was sharing the same information through a radio, sending a warning out to every area that was part of Fortress four and beyond. Wherever radios had been dropped, word of what was coming was spreading.

Sunshine stepped out of the truck, noticing residents running around like little chicks. Bunkers were being prepared in case people needed to move underground.

Others were on a mass shopping spree in the market and convenience store.

In the midst of these, there were individuals whose faith in the bubble and the walls was so strong that they were bringing chairs, blankets, snacks and other things outside. They were planning to watch the new disaster as if it was a movie premier.

“Like I said, weird base.” Leah snorted before walking off.

Sunshine did not think it was weird. She thought it was splendid and she planned to enjoy some viewing of her own. In her last life, when the ice fell, she had been sick: a stomachache and broken leg. She had not even known about the ice disaster until after it had passed.

This time, she would see for herself instead of relying on the stories told by others.

“We are back, all safe.” She informed Hades through the walkie-talkie.

His voice came through slightly shaky but relieved. “Good, I’ll see you at the main command center once all residents are secured inside.”

“How many of the teams have returned?” Sunshine asked.

Hades sighed. “Three last I checked. Some have decided to….”

Loud popping from the bubble interfered with the sound, making her unable to hear what else he had to say.

She looked up.

Small sharp ice was falling from the sky but in between, there were bigger sized ones. Some were the size of a human head.

One strike was enough to strike a skull, break bones; to split a roof but the bubble deflected every impact.

“Guys…Suni, if you are there, please report to the command center.” Lisha’s voice came through the radio. “We have lost contact with the troops in Westbrook town.” Her alert came through sharp and urgent. “I repeat, we have lost contact with the troops in Westbrook town.”

Sunshine froze for five seconds.

Then, she sprinted to the command center, running into Hades outside. He had been on his way to her. Both of them rushed into the center together.

The room was buzzing with different sounds. The voices of comms officers communicating with other bases. Others were coordinating medics on ground to help residents that had been injured due to panic. Between their voices was the sound of keyboards being tapped frantically.

Lisha was one of the keyboard tappers. Her fingers were flying, her brows knit tightly as she concentrated on her task.

“What happened? How many of our people are out there?” sunshine demanded, her voice steady but eyes sharp. They focused at the dark square on the monitor. Offline_ it read.

Lisha exhaled Shakily. “Just watch…. this is the last footage I got.”

She pulled up the last recorded footage. Like most towns, Westbrook was damaged and crumbling. It now drowned in chaos. Streets were overturned, vehicles abandoned and snow blanketed everything.

Lisha zoomed in on the squad’s trucks as they entered the ghostly town.

Alfred’s truck had been in the lead since he was familiar with the area. But he had not been in charge, Dominic was.

“Look at all the damage.” Hades muttered.

“It’s to be expected.” Sunshine said. “The more disasters the more damage will be done without the bubble shield.”

The moment the trucks parked, the squads began doing their work, some installed the bubble while others gave out supplies. Some people claimed to be in charge and wanted the supplies to be handed over.

Then it began.

Out of the ruins, shadows darted; superhumans armed with blades, real guns and crude weapons. They moved like wolves cornering prey, silent until the first attack.

A grenade detonated on the hood of the second truck, ice shards exploding in all directions. Another had been thrown into the truck through an open window. The men and women had jumped out immediately taking cover behind their vehicles. Shots rang out, quick and controlled bursts from trained hands.

Alfred threw out his hands, signaling the men. He yelled something, but the footage couldn’t pick up the sound over the chaos. His hands hurled burst of fire toward the attackers.

Another attacker leapt from the roof of an overturned bus, landing on Greg. The man the stumbled backward with a broken, bleeding hand.

Morris morphed into a giant and broke arms and legs while ordering his people to enter the trucks. Dominic had joined him, and he said something to three of the superhumans. Their group turned on each other.

In the chaos, the squads got back into the working trucks and started to retreat, but another wave of attackers swarmed, coming after them, some running as fast as the trucks.

The drone jerked violently as something struck it.

Another explosion flashed across the screen_ white, bright swallowing everything.

Then static.

Lisha paused the footage, her face tight. “That is all, we cannot determine exactly how the drone went down because it was very high up. It could have been hit by a bullet.”

Sunshine folded her arms, jaw clenched. “It could also have been hit by a frost stone or a watcher’s claws.”

Hades shook his head grimly. “I say an explosive. You saw them throw a grenade on and in the truck. We did not expect this much resistance from one of the places closest to us the most. It looks like the people there have access to explosives. I am worried that they did not give up on the trucks. Food and water are the most valuable things in the apocalypse…..they were willing to do anything to get their hands on them.”

Sunshine lifted her chin. “Whatever took out the drone does not matter right now, what does is finding our people and bringing them home. I sent them out there, I cannot abandon them.”

Hades stepped closer to the command console. “Lisha how long has it been since the signal was lost?”

“Forty-two minutes. We did not panic immediately because we were still in communication with the team.” She explained quickly before Sunshine could take her head off.

“Ma’am, I have an update.” An officer two rows down from Lisha shouted.
