Chapter 363: Bubble Shields all around.
One group sped towards Kalmoor, were hundreds of civilians had gathered in half collapsed buildings. Twenty trucks in total entered the town, with men and women dressed in military uniforms.

Without wasting a moment, they started pumping bubbles and blowing them manually. Others applied gel while the leader of the group, Morris and two other people announced their presence and reason for coming.

As cold was it was, people still came outside to see what was happening. Those who were brave gathered around the newly set up fire pits with special charcoal that could burn even in the snow.

Those without food lined up at the food truck at the back. Not a single person made a fuss like the team had been expecting.

The population of the town amazed the team as people made their way out of the bunkers.

“These people would have died if the president had not thought of the bunkers.” Private Craydon aired his thoughts.

“It wasn’t the president, it was some unnamed aide.” Another soldier said. “And the Quinn money made this possible.”

“Thank God for that Quinn money.” A soldier said over the radio, before whistling.

Morris encouraged the townsfolk to join them in blowing bubbles, explaining what they did.

The town was big so the troops were spread out and their pace was different. When the last bubble floated up and joined the rest, the people watched nervously as the shield came together seamlessly.

As soon as they started to realize that snow was no longer falling inside, they celebrated.

“Now while you can come outside as much as you want, you should remember to stay warm.” Morris announced. “We are giving out wood, charcoal and thermaline seeds.”

Through the town, the distribution activity went on. The still standing buildings were turned into shelters. Some people whose homes were still standing, chose to return to them rather than staying in the bunkers.

Morris and team found the largest field in the town and started pitching large tents. Soldiers would be moving in permanently, the towns people just didn’t know it yet.

And when they thanked the soldiers and government for coming to their aid. No one corrected them.

Those that went to Camp Pitbull were welcomed with joy because Sunshine had been spending supplies for some time now. To them, Fortress four was already an important source of survival.

When Sunshine proposed an alliance, they agreed immediately. They worked together to put up the bubble.

Another squad headed to Busker, to check on the farmers, builders and soldiers that had moved there to start rebuilding. All was well. Supplies were delivered quickly and the team returned to Fortress four.

In Hunkerville, were the mining tunnels seemed to be still standing, the situation started tensely.

Kent Hutchinson, the geokinetic that had expanded the tunnels, stood on one side with his people when the trucks arrived, rugged and dirt stained. Suspicion flickered in his eyes.

Even before Hadrian said a thing, the man kicked the ground, making it vibrate. It was a warning and display of his ability.

“What’s all this?” He demanded.

“Help.” Hadrian replied.

“Why now?” Kent drew his head back and spat in the snow. “Why is the government sending help now?”

Hadrian stepped forward and pulled Kent aside. Whatever he whispered into his ear made Kent’s posture softened instantly.

“Oh,” Kent breathed. “Quinn group…..I see. I knew this damn government would never help us. They say the White house has fallen and we have two presidents now. I reckon, those in power don’t have time for us. Why are you helping us?”

“Do you want to live in the ground forever while the rest of the world thrives on the surface?” Hadrian asked him. “Your people may support you now. But when they finally realize that they missed an opportunity to live a life as normal as possible, they will resent you.”

“Normal!” Kent snorted.

Hadrian nodded. “As normal as possible inside a shield that keeps out ninety nine percent of mutated beasts and protects you from most of the effects of the weather. Moreover, we will be providing food, water, medical care and other things. The government has failed us. We are all we have now.” He grasped Ken’s hands. “Each other.”

Kent snorted again. He did not trust corporations too and the Quinn group was one. They were for profit. What was in it for them?

His wife Soledad tugged on his arm. “Kent, they have milk for the children.” She whimpered in relief.

Kent’s still suspicious eyes found the trucks that were distributing food. His people were already surrounding them, some even wanted to climb up. Hunger was their biggest challenge. “Food and safety.” He looked at Hadrian.

Hadrian nodded. “All we want in return is cooperation. This town is under Fortress four base.”

Kent nodded.

The solders got to work, pulling in the townsfolk to help. The town quieted once the bubble shield shimmered into place.

“It looks weak.” Kent muttered.

“Don’t underestimate it.” Hadrian told him.

With the job done, some soldiers stayed back and others started the drive back to Westbrook. Hadrian was with them.

Some squads went to Westbrook town and Wescot.

Sunshine and her squad headed to Silverdale next, the largest and most fortified town. It was the only one that seemed to have some kind of organized leadership in the area.

As soon as they approached the entrance, armed guards rushed out, forming a barrier.

“Stop right there!” One shouted. “No one comes in!”

Sunshine lowered her window and said. “This is not a optional visit.”

She pushed the barrier back with ice, sending the men running off to call for reinforcements. But she did not step out of the truck and neither did anyone else.

Less than half a minute later, a scraggly bearded man in a vest with a rifle slung over his shoulder came out. “Which of the presidents sent you?” He demanded. “And what the hell brings you here?”

Sunshine did not have time for ego theatrics. She stepped out of her vehicle and the rest of the soldiers did so.

They raised their nullfire guns. Weapons Adam’s men had never seen before. Fear washed over the Silverdale guards instantly. The soldiers were intimidating in their uniforms and masks.

“If you want to do this the hard way, we can prove to you how deadly we can be.” She raised her hand. “Superhumans, soldiers and weapons, we have it all. Choose what you want to face first.”

There were other superhumans around from Silverdale that wore faces of resistance. But none dared to move because they were still assessing the situation.

“I am Adam, the leader here.” The one with the beard said. “What do you want?”

“You will find out in a while.” Sunshine replied. “Don’t worry, we are not here for your food. There is more than enough where we came from. We have brought help. Think of us as your guardian angels.”

Sunshine’s team split up with ruthless efficiency. Two hundred soldiers invading the town. Some began installing the bubble shield around Silverdale. Others gave out sandwiches and water.

Some kept their guns and eyes fixed on Adam’s men, who also watched them back. One small spark would ignite a fight between the two parties.

As the bubbles rose, Adam got increasingly worried. “What the hell is that thing?!” He shouted. “Is it something kind of device to spy on us?”

His voice cracked near the end. No one answered.

Another burst of energy hummed through the air as the final bubble segment snapped into place_ encasing the town in a shimmering, light pink dome.

“The snow….it is not falling inside anymore.” A woman said in wonder.

“You are welcome.” Nimo shouted.

Sunshine tossed a packet of gel towards Adam and his men. “Apply this around the edges of high areas like balconies every six hours if you want to survive what is coming.”

Adam sneered. “And what exactly_”

But the guards were already collecting the gel with trembling hands. Whatever the pink thing was, if it could keep out the snow, it would keep out the rain and other things. At least, they would be able to walk around the town without worrying.

“What next?” Nimo asked Sunshine. “These ones are stubborn. Do we take them by force.”

Sunshine shook her head. “We don’t need to fight. When they see the neighboring towns thriving and we engulf them, they will beg us to take them in. Besides, I would rather be home when the ice falls than here.”

Nimo gestured to the troops, it was time to move on. Food distribution was stopped. The trucks were closed up and they pulled out of the town.

The journey back was mostly silent and very fast. All the trucks traveled at nearly maximum speed and when they came across mutated beasts, they released a sound which was familiar to the roar of a crocodylus. It was enough to send whatever wanted to engage them running off.

As Sunshine’s convoy climbed the mountain road, the snow fall thickened. The flakes hit the wind shield with sharp cracks.

“They are getting harder or sharper.” Nimo said, breaking the silence in the truck.

A massive flake smashed against the glass, leaving a white star-shaped impact. It was so hard that it almost shattered the glass.

“It’s beginning,” Sunshine said darkly. “O’Toole….step on it.”
