Chapter 359: The milk episode.
Sunshine and the others stepped aside to discuss what Paula had confessed so far.

“What do you make of this?” She asked them,

“Kill her.” Leah spoke up quickly.

Sunshine rolled her eyes. “Do you have one word in your vocabulary Leah?”

Leah shrugged.

Major Elio said heavily, “If her story is true, they deliberately instilled fear in her.”

“I know of the Burton’s,” Hades said. “I have crossed paths with them in business. Heath Burton is an asshole. Very cunning and untrustworthy. If she is related to him…we should be careful. Apples don’t fall far from the trees. Maybe the watchers gave her a mission she is hiding from us or unaware of herself.”

“All the best to kill her.” Leah chimed in.

Some people groaned. Major Elio even rolled his eyes and a part of him was glad that the priest was not around for this small think tank.

“Don’t make me suppress your abilities Leah.” Sunshine warned the woman.

Leah snorted.

Carson cleared his throat. “There are some things that I have noted. Things we need to get from her in order to understand the abilities of the watchers. How long did it take for her to be flown from the Drift lands to Westbrook?

How did she survive the journey? Even if she is superhuman, being flown in the claws of a bird at these temperatures is dangerous. Look at her, she arrived here in a flimsy sweater and dry clothes. How was that possible?”

Everyone thought back to the few seconds or minutes of the previous night when they caught a glimpse of Paula being brought into the base.

“The snow under her boots was too thin.” Leah muttered. “Dominic and I examined what she was wearing and everything she brought in with her. Her clothes smelled fresh. If she had been wearing them for days, they would have some kind of stench.”

Carson nodded. He had also noticed this little tidbit.

“Maybe she was hidden inside the wings of a watcher.” Hades suggested.

“That’s one idea.” Major Elio tilted his head.

“Or maybe she was not tormented for days but minutes or seconds.” Sunshine made a suggestion of her own. “Think about it, the watchers are masters at playing mind games.”

“And in a state of extreme fear, Paula would find it hard to differentiate between reality and fiction.” Major Elio nodded. “Not to mention the fact that the birds have super freakish alien flying speed. It is not impossible that her timeline is wrong.”

“But what was the end game?” Hades asked.

Sunshine hummed_a sound of agreement and understanding. “They were turning her into a weapon. Before she was dropped on the shield, I heard one of the bubbles popping. Perhaps the watchers thought they had found a way to drop her inside. In her confused state, think of what would have happened at the bonfire if she landed within our midst.”

They all thought about those wind cyclones Paula had created.

“Shit!” Major Elio whispered.

“It would have been a massacre.” Carson said slowly. “And many would have died, including her.”

Sunshine’s face turned grim. “They are really toying with us. We are like an experiment and entertainment to them.”

Leah put her hand on Sunshine’s shoulder. “So, can we kill her now? We don’t know if she has a hidden mission. Better to get rid of the trouble now.”

She did not whisper. Her words were loud enough to reach Paula’s ears.

Paula shouted weakly. “Please don’t kill me. I don’t know what you did to me but please undo it and set me free. I will leave for the drift lands immediately.”

Everyone turned to Paula, their expressions unreadable.

Sunshine studied Paula quietly. The woman looked small now, curled up and exhausted. She appeared to be a victim of the watcher’s games.

But Sunshine did not let emotion cloud the judgement. Until they got to the bottom of things, she would not undo what she had done to Paula.

Without another word, she stepped out of the room and the others followed. Carson was the last to step out after reminding the guards to watch her carefully,

Paula watched them leave, her heart sinking as she had no idea what the silence meant.

*****

Zulu flew out of the monitoring room and perched on Sunshine’s shoulder. “That guest left out something important.” It squawked.

Everyone turned to look at the bird.

“Which is?” Major Elio asked.

Zulu stretched her wings proudly. “The watchers are angry because she killed a superhuman they dropped in the drift lands. She ruined their plans like you, Purple. I guess bringing her here was a punishment.”

“Death at our hands.” Major Elio muttered.

Carson scoffed. “We could all tell that she was holding back something.”

Sunshine turned to Carson. “Transfer her to Sheldon’s base, she will be the first resident prisoner there. She cannot stay here.”

“Yes ma’am.” Carson replied immediately and left to make arrangements.

“Why not throw her out?” Elio asked.

Sunshine shook her head. “The watchers might pick her up and simply transform her into something else and send her back. Anyway, we still have questions for her. We will use her to understand the situation in the Drift lands clearly.”

“And someday, we will ransom her father for her exchange.” Leah said.

Sunshine blinked. Moon might have triggered Leah’s villain era.

*********

The moment Sunshine and Hades stepped into the house, a shrill scream was what welcomed them. “He took my Milk! Grandma White took my milk!”

Sunshine blinked at Hades. “Oh no.”

They rushed to here the sound came from.

There, standing on top of the couch like a stranded survivor, was Castiel. He had on one woolen sock on his left foot, hair wild like a birds nest blown apart by a storm. He was also clutching the air as if he was summoning courage from invisible superheroes.

Below him sat White, happily chugging from the small cup. Castiel’s cup! His furry body rocked side to side in absolute joy, watching his favorite cartoons.

Beside the bear, Earl and Leo were on the floor laughing their lungs out.

“Boys…..” Sunshine called tentatively.

“He did it again, mommy!” Castiel shrieked the moment he spotted her, running to her. “He stole my blanket at night, and now he is drinking my milk! He is picking on me!”

White paused when he saw Sunshine, Milk dribbling down it’s chin like a guilty toddler caught mid-crime. He hid the cup behind his back.

Hades shook his head. “White, why are you picking on your brother?”

Across the room, Ariel, arms crossed, looked like a commander who had lost the war. “Mom, you need to do something about those two. Castiel has been screaming for the past one hour. And none of them listens to me. Especially White, he thinks he is in charge.”

Sunshine inhaled. “Where is your grandmother?”

A tired voice answered from the kitchen. “Hiding.”

Rori stepped out, hair tied up in a scarf, looking like a woman who just fought a battlefield more dangerous than any mutant animal. “They were up for most of the night.”

Sunshine sighed and approached the center of chaos.

Earl pointed, laughing even harder. “Mom look! White is hiding the evidence.”

The bear was trying to push the cup into the couch. A useless effort!

“White is bad.” Castiel declared.

Ariel folded his arms. “White has been misbehaving too much lately.”

“White? ” Sunshine called his name.

The cub lifted it’s head innocently, then let out a soft little growl that sounded suspiciously smug.

Leo holding the tablet, added, “I recorded everything, aunt Sunshine.” He showed her.

After watching White stealing Castiel’s milk and raising his paws in what was an obvious threat, Sunshine winced at White. “You have been a bad bear.”

White made a small chaffing sound as if offended by the accusation.

“Punish him mommy.” Castiel said.

With a heavy sigh, she walked to White and placed a hand on his furry head. The bear cub rubbed against it, and cozied up to her, whining and shivering as if he was the victim.

“White,” she said slowly. “Stop stealing from your brother.”

The baby cub blinked and whined. It sounded like he was crying and complaining.

“Maybe we need Zulu to translate ” Hades added a laugh to his words.

Sunshine pointed at White. “If you misbehave, I will punish you…no coconut beans, no milk, no fish crackers, no cartoons. Understood?”

White pulled his paws away from Sunshine, trembling as if the weight of the threat was too great. Unexpectedly, tears fell from its purple eyes like drops of liquid light.

Hades reached for the bear, glancing at Sunshine with accusatory eyes. “I cannot believe you made him cry.”

“You are a monster Suni.” Rori hurried to the little bear, comforting him.

All the adults and children, including Castiel rallied around the bear. And Sunshine, she was in disbelief, finding herself the villain of the family.
