Chapter 358: The woman in charge.
“Bold words for someone with a death sentence that is simply waiting to be stamped.” Leah’s voice cut into the room. The soft sound of the heel of her boots followed as she walked in and approached the cell, standing outside the bars, eyes glued on Paula. “What makes you think that you will have the chance to snap anyone’s neck? You don’t seem to realize that you are swimming in deep waters with very hungry sharks.”
As soon as she raised her hand, Sunshine dragged her back. “Leah, sweetie, you need to breathe, eat and sleep.”
Leah snorted. She ripped her elbow from Sunshine’s hand and found a spot in the corner, standing there like a shadow.
Sunshine sighed.
Hades bit his upper lip. He wondered where Dominic was. The man was always like a puppy, following his wife wherever she went. He had heard all about her destruction of the eggs and he knew Sunshine had not been too pleased about that even though she did not put it in words.
If Leah killed this strange woman, the word would be said. Now was the time for Dominic to show up and keep his wind trigger happy wife calm.
The doctor tried to examine Paula again and she hissed at him.
“Seriously!” he exclaimed.
“Leave her,” Sunshine ordered the doctor. “If instead of being grateful about you checking on her health status she is threatening you, then do not waste your time.”
The doctor retreated, as did the three other members of the medic team that had been standing by.
Sunshine walked closer to the door of the cell, arms folded, gaze steady and cold.
Carson and Major Elio rushed into the room, and they stood to the side, leaning against a wall. Waiting to see what Sunshine could manage to dig up.
“Since you are physically fine and full of energy we should cut to the chase. Begin by answering some questions for me. One, who are you?” Sunshine asked. “And where did the watchers pick you from?”
Paula stared back, eyes screaming with distrust. Her silence was more telling than any verbal response. She was frightened. Paula Burton had never felt terror like the one she was experiencing, it seemed like she was caught in a never-ending nightmare.
She now knew how the superhumans dropped in the Drift lands felt. The only way for someone to understand it was to go through it.
Her body still trembled uncontrollably as she sat cuffed to the metal bed. Her thoughts were scattered running in circles, crushing into each other like fragmented animals.
Fear. Anger. Confusion. Disbelief.
Are they planning to kill me? Is someone out there already suggesting it the same way my father used to advocate for the dropped superhumans to be killed.
The thought clawed to her chest.
When her father brought up that suggestion, she had not supported it, but she had not been against it either. In fact, she had advocated for the ones that were out of control to be killed for the safety of everyone. Now, she was in the same situation.
Her powers were gone. Completely. The wind no longer answered to her. She had grown accustomed to her abilities and without them she felt like an empty shell. Like a musician that had gone deaf overnight.
How was she supposed to escape now? How was she supposed to get back home? Back to the drift lands where her family was.
She gripped the edges of the bed tightly, fighting tears.
She stared at the purple haired woman that stood before her in a military stance. She didn’t need to speak for Paula to know that she was dangerous. She carried authority like a weapon. She was probably in charge of security in this place.
Paula’s throat tightened. She needed to speak to someone with real authority. The one that could arrange for her to be sent back to her family in exchange for some benefits.
“I want to speak to the person in charge.” She said, her voice sharper than she intended to.
Hades stepped forward, dragging a wooden chair across the floor. He flipped it around, and gestured for Sunshine to sit down, with casual confidence.
Paula frowned. For a few seconds, she had leaped to the conclusion that the man was in charge. But if he was, he would be the one sitting down, not the woman.
Sunshine spread her arms out. “Person in charge, you are looking at her. Sunshine Quinn is the name, and this is my base. Now who are you and where are you from?”
Paula’s breath hitched. She observed the body language of the people around. None flinched, guffawed, rolled their eyes or reacted in any way to give away a joke. They were calm. So, the woman was not likely to be a liar.
“Quinn?” Paula whispered, staring at Sunshine. She remembered that name from before the apocalypse. The photos on the internet and news headlines had not done Sunshine any justice, she was way prettier than what was posted out there.
“You are Hades Quinn’s wife.” She stared harder. The hair was different, the face more hardened but it was her.
Sunshine nodded. “Yes I am. I have answered many of your questions, but you have done the opposite…”
“So this is Quinn territory?” Paula cut her off.
Sunshine nodded once. “Yes.”
Paula inhaled shakily. The man that had dragged the chair was Hades Quinn! She felt silly for not recognizing him earlier. The Quinns were business people, she could open up to them.
Eagerly, she said, “My name is Paula Burton. The watchers brought me from the drift lands of the Javed desert.”
Carson moved to stand behind Sunshine, raising his brow. “The Drift lands? That is thousands of miles away from here.”
“4,900 miles to be exact.” Carson chimed in. “That is a long distance to cover just to drop you here.”
Paula’s mind twisted. She needed to be careful. She needed them to see her as a victim, not a threat.
“Why would the watchers bring you here to cause trouble?” Sunshine asked.
“I do not know.” Paula lied blatantly, she suspected that it was because she had killed the superhuman dropped by the watchers.
Sunshine leaned forward, eyes narrowing. “How many superhumans have been dropped in the drift lands so far?”
Paula blinked rapidly, genuinely surprised.
“How…..How do you know about that?”
Sunshine didn’t answer, just watched.
Paula swallowed. “Too many, about forty-seven. The last one led me into this mess, he came in extremely hostile and …..extremely dangerous…..” her words drifted off, not wanting to reveal more. She forced herself to breath. “How many have been dropped here?
Sunshine relaxed slightly. “You are the first.”
Paula shook her head slowly, disbelief and horror mixing together. “Why?”
“That is what we want to find out.” Sunshine answered. “You were in a horrific state after they dropped you. You looked like you had seen the devil….”
“Because I did.” Paula threw in. Her breath quivered. Memories clawed at her mind. “Those things tormented me for days,” she said with a trembling voice. They whispered things to me. They messed around with my head and made me see things in the mist. I was terrified.” A tear slid down her cheek. “When they finally dropped me in the snow, I was…..I just didn’t want them to take me again.” Her shoulders shook as she wiped her face aggressively. “I didn’t mean to bring trouble,” she whispered. “They are monsters, they are monsters.”
