Chapter 357: Purple is marked.
One thing was very clear about Leah Steward, she had anger issues. She was suspicious of everything and everyone. Given what she had been through, it was understandable. But, Sunshine refused to let Leah’s problems and attitude be her decision campus.
“No, I am not shooting her just yet.” Sunshine shook her head. “We need to try and figure out what is going on with her or at least where she came from. The watchers do not act without reason.”
Leah slammed her fist on the table. “The watchers have never done anything good for us. When those mutant and mutated beasts appear, they watch. When humans kill each other, they watch. When the weather kills us….’
“They watch.” Zulu chimed in.
Two women glared at the parrot. Zulu tucked her head in her feathers and kept quiet.
Sunshine looked at Leah and said, “I understand where you are coming from. This woman could be another Moon for all we know. But she could also be another helpless individual plucked from her family and dropped here. She must be confused and scared. I am not proposing that we bring her inside, embrace her and sing kumbaya. I am suggesting that we handle this logically.”
“Lady you have one minute calm down and quit it with the dramatic wind throwing.” A voice sounded through the base. Philips’ voice, from the command center.
Sunshine reached for her megaphone and said into it,
“Ma’am, please lower your hands and winds. We are not the enemies, but we can be if we are pushed to be. Do not make us use force against you.”
Paula only shrieked louder, her hands clawing at the air as if trying to rip the sky apart. The snowstorm around her thickened into spiraling funnels. Two cyclones formed around her.
Tall, dancing, violent.
The watchers perched in the sky above her like giant demonic birds.
The pink watcher leaned so forward that even a nearby ordinary watcher scooted away a little. Pink’s long neck twisted curiously, claws twitching in excitement.
It seemed very pleased with it’s delivery of chaos to what was a relatively peaceful base.
“Pink is pleased.” Zulu said.
Leah snorted. “If the watchers are pleased, it means something bad is going to happen. Suni. I beg you, let us kill her. I like this base. If I had known that it was this great, I would have accepted Hades’ offer of employment and moved here with my family. Maybe my Aliana would now be alive.”
Sunshine pulled a small injector from her belt_ clear liquid swirling inside. “There are other ways to manage this situation and outwit the watchers. Let’s see how she handles this suppressant serum.” She muttered.
She loaded the dart into the her gun, exhaled and took aim.
Outside, the cyclones grew taller, cracking with pressure ready to tear down the outside wall. If not completely at least partially.
Sunshine fired the first shot with a special gel. It created a small gap in the bubble shield.
Then, she fired another, following the first by three seconds only.
The dart cut through the wind cleanly, passed through the gap in the shield, the rising cyclones and struck Paula’s shoulder.
Within five seconds, the cyclones started to falter. The rotating columns of air staggered, unraveling like strings being pulled apart. The wind died slowly, wailing mournfully.
Paula swayed, staring at her hands in horror.
She tried to summon the wind again_ sharp gesture, desperate breath_ but nothing answered. Not even a breeze. She let out a terrified sob.
Screaming, she staggered like a drunkard, waving her hands. She even jumped, arms flailing like a collapsing banner. For five minutes, she tried her best until exhaustion started seeping into her bones. Nothing worked.
Paula fell to her knees.
Up in the sky, the watchers reacted with shock. The pink watcher tilted it’s head like a confused owl, then it shuffled back. A second later, it became furious. It screeched, covering it’s face dramatically, then pointed four claws at the woman as if scolding her.
“Oh-oh! Its mad, very mad.” Zulu shrieked.
Sunshine smirked. “Good.”
Pink continued to shriek, something unintelligible but definitely angry, flapping its arms in wild, offended gestures.
Then it pointed a wing at the watchtower, straight at Sunshine.
Then back at Paula.
Then back at Sunshine.
Zulu lowered her head hiding away from the view of the watcher. “Congratulations Purple, you have been marked.”
Pink’s whole body screamed, “why are you ruining my plans!”
Sunshine lifted her dart riffle again.
The pink watcher froze.
She smirked at it again_ slow, taunting.
Pink stomped its feet in a tantrum, threw its wings to shield the woman. None the less, Sunshine fired the second dart.
It darted through the legs of the watcher and struck Paula’s belly.
Her eyes fluttered once, twice and then collapsed in the snow, unconscious.
“I was aiming for the other shoulder but oh well.” Sunshine muttered.
Pink let out a long, offended screech, dropping its head back like someone complaining to the heavens. It glared at Sunshine with the pout of a child denied candy and flew off.
The rest of the birds followed her, leaving Paula to die in the snow, like her usefulness had been outlived.
Sunshine raised her chin, a serious expression on her face letting Pink know that she was not going to take any nonsense.
Now there was one question that was swirling on her mind. “Who,” she whispered, staring at the unconscious woman. “the hell is she?”
Sunshine did not waste time once the watchers left.
“Bring her into the third wall prison,” she ordered, voice sharp and cold.
The soldiers at the gate moved immediately. Four superhumans cuffed the limp aerokinetic, lifting her with practiced precision and dragging her into the gate. Even unconscious, her fingers twitched as if still trying to summon the wind that no longer answered her.
“So, are we at war with the watchers?” Elio asked her, grinning like he had enjoyed the stand off.
Sunshine tilted her head. “Honestly, we have always been at war with them. It’s just that they are more powerful than us, so we have to tread carefully until we are strong enough to wipe them out with one blow.” She grabbed Leah’s hand. “Lets go warrior queen. I for one happen to be in the mood to meet the guest.”
Everyone on fortress four stayed on edge for the rest of the night. Only a few dared to sleep or say anything out loud.
Sunshine spent the night in the prison wing. She sat outside Paula’s cell, elbows on her knees, eyes refusing to blink as if expecting the stranger to wake at any moment.
Hades came by twice, first with food and coffee, then with a blanket.
“You should rest,” he murmured. “You look exhausted.”
Sunshine jutted her chin towards Paula. “Not until I know who she is.”
Hades sighed heavily and dropped beside her, offering quiet company. Eventually, Sunshine grabbed him by the back of the collar like she was a misbehaving teenager.
“Back to the kids….Castiel or White could search for one of us in the night, it was a traumatic evening.”
Hades dug his heels into the ground. “Mother is with them, they will be fine.”
Sunshine smiled and didn’t argue with him any further. She leaned her head against his shoulder, and they huddled together for the rest of the night.
Just as the first pale streaks of dawn brushed over the mountain, a loud gasp echoed from the cell.
“She’s awake.” A doctor that was checking on Paula announced loudly.
Paula jerked up violently, eyes widen sweat dampening her hair. The doctor tried to examine her again but she kicked, thrashed, and twisted in cuffs.
“Stop touching me!” She snarled. Her voice was like a whip–sharp and defiant. Even weak, she fought like someone who refused to be broken. “Where am I?” She snapped, eyes darting around the room finally resting on her cuffed hands. Paula scoffed. “The second these come off, someone’s neck will pay the price.”
