Chapter 354: More will come.
Paula rolled her eyes, exasperated. “Save the condemning for later. And there is no us, don’t make it sound like we are in a book club just because we woke up with superpowers.” Enraged still, she summoned a hard ball of condensed air and shot it at Alena’s back.
The impact slammed Alena forward. She hit the ice face first and blacked out.
The silence that followed was deafening. It seemed like even the wind slowed, as if afraid.
Heath finally emerged from hiding and bolted towards the fallen bodies. He dropped to his knees beside Arwin, shaking him vigorously.
“Son_Son!” He shouted. “How dare they kill my son!” His voice cracked, raw with rage and sorrow. He took out his gun and fired three shots at the tall man’s lifeless body. “How dare you. I knew you were all no good.”
Medics had already rushed in, reaching Sozo and Arwin first. Heath was pulled away, screaming and cursing.
“This one is dead.” A doctor announced, letting his hands fall from Sozo’s chest.
“Arwin is alive! Get him to the clinic! Move!” Another doctor screamed. “He still has a pulse.”
Heath stopped sobbing, his eyes widened, filled with hope. “Hurry up! get my son inside for medical care. If he dies, someone is going to pay.” He screamed on top of his lungs.
“Take Alena too.” Paula ordered. “I think I hit her too hard.”
“No.” Heath blocked the path of the medics that were carrying Alena’s stretcher.
They were startled and confused.
“She is one of those dropped here by the watchers.” He said, spitting the word like poison. “You all saw what happened here today…. these people are dangerous. I almost lost my son!” He wiped his wet face, a mix of tears and melted snowflakes.
Paula could see that her father was in a distraught state, she escorted him to the car. “Father, you need to calm down.”
Heath shoved her aside. “And you need to see reality…. these strangers are dangerous!”
Paula sighed. There was some truth in what her father said. All the superhumans dropped in their base arrived fully charged, eager for a fight. There was something off about them.
Heath clenched his teeth, “I am going to confine them. All of them, even those that will be dropped off in the future. If they cannot be killed, I will lock them away.”
Paula scoffed. “Confine them? They’ll form an alliance or team up and use their abilities against us. Have you forgotten that they are superhumans?”
“Then we send them out there in the wild,” Heath suggested. “After all there are other people surviving out there.”
A frown formed on Paula’s face. “No, it is too soon to cast them out, this is the first time we failed to calm a dropped superhuman. The bullet was what set him off. Besides, Arwin will hate you for it.”
“He is spineless….a soft heart will get him killed for real.” Heath pinched his lips. “That blue haired moron was waving his hands around and now look at him. He is dead.”
Paula folded her arms, thinking hard. “Let us continue to watch them, if the situation escalates then, we will take extreme measures. Even kill them where necessary.”
Heath nodded. “I still do not understand why they are bringing them here? Is it the same case with other communities?”
Paula shook her head, shivering despite the cold. I do not know but I do know one thing.” She looked up at the sky, the watchers were moving restlessly, “the watchers will bring more unstable superhumans. They seem to be planning something, and we are smack-dab in the middle.”
Just as she turned, a shadow flashed above her and suddenly, Paula was yanked in the air. She shrieked loudly, fighting for her voice to be heard over the wind.
By the time everyone outside or peeking through the window realized it, a watcher was flying away with her.
Heath stood frozen in one place, watching his daughter vanish. In his mind, he screamed her name, but his mouth remained closed.
“We should not have killed him. We angered the watchers.” A guard said.

By evening, the blizzard had not eased, and it seemed to be becoming even worse. It looked like another snowstorm was on the horizon by the time the soldiers and superhumans who went out to battle returned to Fortress Four.
Behind the last truck inside dragged two crates on sleds. In the transparent crates lay the hulking bodies of the two mutated crocodiles.
Stories about the beasts had long spread and their appearance had everyone that glanced upon the gasping.
Old Simon, returning from the market with a smoking pipe in his mouth almost had a heart attack. A woman fainted with her supplies that she had just picked from the supply center.
“I thought it was just tales.” A villager whispered.
Out of the decontamination center, the victorious warriors of the fortress were instantly hailed as heroes. Family members rushed forward with warm jackets and hot beverages. Wives rushed in with kisses for their husbands and vice versa. Men slapped the backs of their comrades so hard that they nearly toppled.
As always, Sunshine had something to say before they could disperse. Atop a truck, she shouted through a megaphone, “Tonight, we feast. There will be a barbecue in the second wall field. Everyone is invited.”
Shouts of joy resounded.
Philip had managed to get a hold of Lisha’s megaphone, and he shouted into it, “Yes, we are feasting but not on crocodile stew!”
“And no snake meat.” Someone said.
“And no rat meat.” Another added.
Sunshine jumped down from the truck as the crowd cheered. She fell straight into the loving arms of her husband.
“I got fifty back-to-back heart attacks when you were fighting those beasts.” He whispered.
She wrapped her hands around his neck. “I had a good team and Tank. Where are my boys?”
Hades grimaced. “Kid squad training.”
Sunshine laughed.
“Billionaire alert.” Hades said, tightening his arms around her waist. And then, he sped off, vanishing at the speed of light.
He left behind exasperated billionaires that thought the escape act was a little too exaggerated.
By evening, the crocodiles were the biggest attraction, laid out on display in the middle of the field like a centerpiece. Brave children from the kids’ squad, armed with wooden swords, toy guns and one suspiciously sharp carrot had climbed onto its back.
Castiel, with the carrot was stabbing the crocodylus where the sac had once been.
Two twins were trying to pull one of the crocs by the tail, groaning as they exerted all their strength with zero results.
Morris had pried the jaws of the female crocodylus open with his bare hands. Some children were taking trips inside, like miners heading into the ground.
Philip and Siegfried were telling others all the comic worthy moments they witnessed during the fight.
A band was singing, playing instruments and encouraging residents to dance around the fire pits.
Sitting around a fire pit, Sunshine was rubbing her face on White’s freshly cleaned fur. Hades was sitting behind her; one arm wrapped around her waist. He was watching their children and drinking a beer.
“How many more mutated crocodiles like these are out there?” He asked her.
Sunshine sighed. “Too many.” A bubble in the shield popped. Over the noise, not many people heard it, but she did.
