Chapter 353: Lightning in the Drift lands.
The drift lands were no longer the same. The residents had grown used to the cold, but tension rippled through the area because the population was exceeding what they could handle.
This was more so in the Burton base because the watchers continued to drop superhumans inside like broken gifts from the snowy sky.
Every day, at least ten were brought by. No explanation was given. Most were aggressive, ready for a fight and the base commander was tired of it all. That is why he was determined to put a stop to it now.
He had a superhuman tracking the movements of the watchers and today, another gift was reported to be arriving. Heath was ready to put his plan into action. He stood in the central tower that had reinforced mirrors, wrapped in furs, jaw clenched as sirens wailed.
Another drop was on the horizon.
“Positions!” He barked, voice cutting through the icy steel. His armed men on the ground fanned out, riffles raised. Among them were superhumans that were ready to control the situation if a fight broke out.
The gift dropped from the sky, falling into a pile of snow. It was a man, and he was wide awake. He stood immediately, exposing his impressive height, He was tall–too tall for ordinary human standards. But he was thin, shivering and barefoot. His skin was burning red from the cold. His lips trembling. His eyes darted around in a panic, screaming about the uncertainty he was experiencing.
Heath didn’t hesitate in making it clear what he expected. “Shoot!” The order was given calmly and coldly.
A rain of bullets screamed towards the newcomer_ but before they could land, the wind twisted violently. A cyclone of compressed air burst out from the side, knocking the bullets away so fast they ricochet into the snowbanks.
Heath growled at the source of the wind blast, an aerokinetic named Sozo. “You have no business here.” He barked.
“Please Mr. Heath, allow me to talk to him before making any decisions. I was also like him, and I am willing to serve you. He may be the same.” Sozo pleaded. Like this newcomer, he had been dropped in the base by the watchers the week before. He knew what Heath wanted to do to the newcomers and he did not agree.
It was not their fault that the watchers were kidnapping them and dropping them in this desert. Besides, killing the superhumans could anger the watchers. Personally, he had seen the watchers slaughter some marauders that tried to trap one of their kind.
It had been swift and brutal. He did not want to meet that fate.
Heath glared at Sozo, eyes burning with fury, He disliked the blue haired young man whose face had more pins than he had common sense. “My base, my rules.”
“No, the watcher’s rules.” Sozo shouted. He sprinted from the building despite the shouts from others to get back.
The ground shook as the new superhuman kicked balls of snow at those trying to shoot him. In turn, they continued firing at him.
“You are scaring him.” Sozo shouted. He waved his hand, blasting the shooters away with wind. Then he shouted to the newcomer. “Hey, you need to calm down, or this will not end well for you and others.”
The man’s breath came in rasped breaths. “They attacked me first.”
“You dropped from the sky; can you blame them?” Sozo replied. “Calm down, stop using your abilities for a moment.”
“I am …. trying.” Frost steamed off the man’s shoulders. The ground beneath him vibrated. “But I don’t trust anyone here. And no offense, but I don’t know you.” He bent his head and looked down at Sozo like a giraffe looking at a mouse.
Alena, hair tucked under her winter hood, ran forward with Arwin by her side. She raised her palms cautiously.
“Hey_ hey, tall guy, calm down. You are in a safe place. No one is going to hurt you. Sorry about all the shooting, we are just on edge lately.”
Arwin nodded, “We’ve all been through it. The trauma, the fear, being grabbed and dropped here. You are not the first, there are many like you.”
The man blinked. For a moment his shaking eased, and the ground stopped vibrating.
A gun was fired.
His eyes rolled back until only whites showed. Sparks burst violently from his fingertips, popping in the freezing air.
“Get back!” Sozo yelled at everyone around.
Arwin grabbed Alena’s arm and pulled away just as the man convulsed, arcs of electricity rippling over his skin. The sparks intensified into searing white light.
“No-no-no” Alena whispered, recognizing the signs far too late.
The man screamed, the sky answered.
Thunder cracked open the clouds like something alive had slashed them wide. Lightning spider-webbed across the heavens, pulsing in thick, angry vines that curled downward toward the base. The air buzzed of raw power, making everyone’s hair rise.
“He’s unintentionally summoning a storm!” Alena cried.
Heath dove behind a supply crate, shouting, “Fire! Take him down for me.”
His men unleashed another round of bullets_ only for Sozo to step in again, raising a wall of almost solid wind to block the bullets.
“Shoot that idiot too.” Heath roared from his hiding place.
It was easier said than done, the bullets couldn’t reach either of them. None the less, they fired anyway just to show him that his orders were being obeyed. Some were already retreating, ready to run in case the tall man started barbecuing people.
By now, the thunderstorm had grown monstrous. Lightning vines lashed the ground like whips from heaven itself. One bolt shot towards the guards.
A cryokinetic, acting on pure instinct, pulled the moisture from the icy surface, shaping a quick barrier of frost. The lightning slammed into it, exploding the barrier into mist. The guards were saved from death.
Paula sprinted out from behind an army truck, her braids whipping in the wind. She only cared about the fate of her twin brother Arwin. “Arwin get your ass out of there!”
Her warning came in a little too late, the newcomer jerked violently. His eyes glowed blinding white_ then he thrust both palms outward.
Lightning bolts, shaped like spears struck everyone that was in close range, sending some to death on contact. Sozo and Arwin took the shot meant for Alena directly in their chests and fell onto the snow, twitching like embers before they die.
“Arwin!” Paula shrieked.
She snapped her hands forward_ rage biting her, twisting her fingers in a sharp pattern. The air thickened into a rope, swirling tight like spun silk. Paula launched it at the man, the invisible rope snaking around his neck with vicious speed.
“Paula, don’t_! Alena shouted. But Paula yanked hard, wrenching his neck sideways. Her rage overwhelmed all her other senses,
A crack echoed through the storm.
The newcomer collapsed instantly, his white eyes dimming. The lightning vines flickered, sputtered, then died as the thunder faded above them.
Alena froze, shock gripping her. Flames began to gather in her palms on reflex, heat melting the snow around her. “No!” she cried, fury boiling in her. “You didn’t have to kill him. He was one of us. Do you know what you have done?”
