Chapter 350: No supplies.
Moon finally complied, jumping out of the truck with a sullen look on her face. Her nerves buzzed like electricity sizzling under her skin. The way she looked at the guard was chilling. Like she wanted to claw out his eyeballs.

“I want to see the person in charge.” She demanded. As far as she figured, if she projected an air of authority, they would think twice before messing with her.

The guard did not respond. Instead, he signaled to another to join him, a female guard. He pulled her aside and whispered something to her that Moon could not hear. None the less, their behavior worried her.

“Hey.” She called out, “I really have a bunker here. It is located near the center. If you take me inside, I can open it and prove myself.”

Other people in different lines went ahead of her group. Those waiting behind them grumbled impatiently. Charmaine looked around nervously. If they were rejected here, he had no idea how long they would last outside.

He did not want to be roaming when the next disaster Moon claimed was coming arrived.

The two guards returned and began asking Moon rapid questions, pressing her about her claim, her lack of documents showing ownership, her supposed family. The pressure built, her composure wavering under the weight of suspicion.

Frustration flared.

“I am Moon Raine!” She snapped, loud sharp voice echoing against the steel gates. “You do not want to mess with me!”

The guard opened his mouth to retort_but a third stepped in. He stepped aside for another figure that he was escorting to come forward.

“Did you say Moon Raine?” A new voice joined in. It belonged to Peter, he had been casually inspecting the Perimeter when he heard Moon screaming her name.

The soldier straightened. “Sir, this woman is being difficult_”

Peter held up a hand, silencing him. He stepped closer to the woman whose name he had many times since the beginning of the apocalypse. Her eyes, nose and lips were all he could see. For some reason, a ridiculous thought had crossed his mind that maybe her hair was silver or pale, like a real moon.

Moon turned, lifted her chin, arched an eyebrow_then rolled her eyes dismissively as if she was bored of repeating herself.

The man smiled faintly. “I am Strauss….Peter Strauss.”

Moon’s mind figured out his identity quickly. Strauss! This was the man in charge. The man with authority, power and control.

Just like that…..her rude demeanor melted.

Her expression softened, lips curling into a seductive smile. “Finally, someone with proper authority,” she breathed in relief, “I am Moon Raine. If you have heard of me, then you know what I can do. If you have not, I will be glad to prove myself to you.”

Peter almost smiled at her arrogance. She was just as Cassius had described her. This was the woman he had been waiting for like he knew she would come to him eventually. The woman his son had undervalued. The woman whose knowledge on the future could keep him alive and make him wealthy beyond his imagination.

He hid his excitement behind a polite smile. “Very well, color me intrigued.”

Moon’s nervousness settled slightly.

Strauss turned to the guards. “Let them in.” He ordered.

“But sir_ ” One of the guards started.

“Are you deaf?” Strauss barked. “LET THEM IN!”

The barricades lifted. Moon’s group got back in their vehicles and the trucks rolled forward without her. Strauss was keeping her by his side firmly. Moon felt a wave of relief so strong it made her legs nearly buckle.

He urged her to walk beside him until they climbed into a golf cart which followed behind the trucks. “I’ve heard…..very good things about you.” He lied, all he had heard were all the bad things she did to his son. After she was done being useful, he would make her pay for all of it.

Moon tilted her head, smiling at him coyly. “Good things I hope.”

She wanted to look around the new Crosstown but that would wait. Talking to the man in charge and firmly establishing herself was more important.

“So where have you been all this while?” He asked.

She smiled and replied vaguely, “Here and there. Many people want to use me because of my talent. Some are trying to use forceful means so I have found myself in hot water more than a few times.”

Peter smiled. He smelled the bullshit in her answer right away but he pretended to believe it. The trucks were directed toward the general settlement while Peter invited her to sit in his private car and go elsewhere.

“I can’t leave my people?” She replied. It was best to take care of her business first.

Peter turned away from her and called for some people. Two women and a man arrived. Peter ordered them to get Charmaine and the others settled in.

“I would like to see my bunker first.” Moon told Strauss.

Strauss nodded. “Of course. I would like to have dinner with you however, I’ll pick you up at eight.” He was a man that acted fast.

Moon nodded, masking calculation as charm. Her eyes were as calculating as his. She was sure that all the things she had been seeking outside, she would get them here, with him.

When Strauss’s car pulled away, Moon’s smile faded into a sharp line.

Charmaine approached, eyes shining with possibility. “The boss seems to like you. He may be our ticket to living a good life here.”

“I told you…..if you follow me you will be sorted.” Moon smirked.

She gestured at Charmaine to follow her and see the bunker. They joined the hundreds of others walking in the streets of Crosstown. There was no snow on the ground to kick. But steam was rising from some holes strategically placed in the roads, melting the snow before it could gather.

Moon’s pulse quickening with anticipation the closer they got to the bunker. She could already picture herself finally wearing something decent and having a satisfying meal.

But when they reached her own underground promised land, she stopped dead. Her stomach dropped. The door was hanging open.

They rushed inside only to discover that the place was empty_ stripped clean.

“What the hell is this? Where the hell are the supplies?” Charmaine screamed, flipping the empty crates that remained.

Moon stared at the hollow bunker, her breath trembling. Her lifeline. It was gone!

How was she going to control the marauders now?

Anger swallowed in her chest_ sharpness hot and humiliating. Who could have dared to do this? The only person that knew about this place were her parents and Denise. What was she to do now? How would she survive? There was no time to weep, she needed a quick solution.

And it came to her.

A slow smile crept on her lips. Peter Strauss.

She still had Peter_ the man ruling Crosstown. The man who already wanted her and looked at her like a treasure that had dropped from the sky.

Moon started to think of ways to use him, marry him if she had to, then she would forget the pain of losing her supplies. She would live like a queen by his side.

Behind her, Charmaine stepped forward, his boots echoing off the cold floor. “Why are you smiling?” He asked bluntly. “All the supplies are gone. Jared is going to lose it. The others too.”

Moon’s smile faded instantly.

Jared, that brute was only loyal to benefit. The others weren’t much better. They did not believe in her fully like Charmaine.

She turned to him. “Put Jared in line. And soon you are going to have to choose between me and him.”

“What?” Charmaine gasped.

“I owe them nothing, I brought them to crosstown and got them a place to stay. That alone is equivalent to all of the supplies that I was going to give them.” Moon said. “And they were never enough for all of us in the first place.”

Charmaine looked up and laughed.

“Besides they have the looted supplies from Rolling valley. To ask me for more is greed.” Moon reminded him. “I am going to be the queen at Strauss’s side. You should know who to serve Charmaine. The supplies are gone, but we can have this little slice of heaven in the apocalypse if we play our cards right.”

Charmaine blinked. It wasn’t as if he had much of a choice anyway.
