Chapter 341: Another Zulu morning.
The door had just closed behind her when she got a new notification from the system that made her turn back and lock the door firmly. The devices she had asked the system to get her were in the space.

She vanished into it immediately and found the devices lined up, each looking more mesmerizing than the next. Some looked ordinary, but she had no doubt they were extraordinary.

The first was a barbell which was silver and black, seemingly light.

[This is the Gravivas grip, a barbell that measures strength. Looks can be deceiving, lifting that screamer from hell takes a lot of strength.]

“Screamer from hell.” She repeated, arching two brows.

[It can compliment or kill self-esteem.] The system shared.

Sunshine bent down, gripped it and pulled it up. It barely reached her knees and yet, she was struggling.

“My grandma can do better than you.” The barbell screamed.

She dropped it, pursing her lips. “I might have to repair you by sowing your nonexistent lips shut.” She muttered.

Sunshine walked to what looked like a treadmill, but with more wires, buttons, a large screen attached and wheels.

[This is Zippometer, it tracks microsecond sprints and warps. But the warping effect is not possible with this particular device as it is a used one. If you were to spend some more gold….]

“No.” She replied quickly and firmly. “Nobody is warping, I just need them to track their speed.”

[Next is the EnduroSloth. It is the device that stimulates and monitors stamina by measuring breath control. You race against a sloth that never tires.]

“A sloth!” She exclaimed. “Come on. It’s like the slowest animal after a snail.”

[Not a mutant sloth.]

She shrugged. That was a fact she would have to prove personally.

[We have the Boom Boom which measures energy emissions. It has sensors that wilt or bloom basing on the discharge it receives.]

Sunshine leaned closer to the interesting device. Boom Boom sounded like an explosive. The device however looked nothing like an explosive it was shaped like a flower and peach in color.

“It is cute.”

[Next is the Dancegrid which measures and trains electrokinetic control. The stronger and more control you have, the more danceable beats it rewards you with.”

It looked like a partition, plain white in color. There was a single door leading inside and she pushed it open. To her shock, the small partition was an entire large hall on the inside. As soon as her feet touched the floor, the walls lit up and lights dimmed. It reminded her of the inside of a nightclub.

[Host, test the device out on your own time. Next, we have the Thinkpop which tests cognitive speed, the Percepti which is a sphere that tests sensory abilities and aids in their enhancement.]

“Slow down.”

[The Scab halo which tests regeneration speed and cheers the faster you heal.]

Sunshine did not have much time to test everything individually as it was introduced. All she did was confirm that they worked and then she was out of the door.

They would be put into real action immediately.

Zulu’s broadcast was loud and hilarious as always. Everyone on the base was tuned in, wondering who the parrot would be talking shit about on this morning.

The parrot’s voice was dramatic, sharp and a tad bit too smug for the liking of some people and yet they always looked forward to it.

“Squawkmorning to you, humans and animals of the apocalypse. Welcome back to Fortress Four 001 FM: The last voice of news in this radioactive litterbox of a planet which is falling apart.”

Lisha’s groan was loud for all to hear. The other thing people loved was her frustration when it came to co-hosting with the parrot.

“I am Captain Zulu, the host.”

“And I am Lisha Quinn, the reluctant co-host. I do not think earth is a litterbox which is falling apart. Ignore the obnoxious parrot.”

Zulu’s laughter blasted through the base. “Let’s get one thing straight mammals: I did not cause the apocalypse. I am just a helpless victim like the rest of you. But I am better than you because I can fly to safety. And I was not on my phone livestreaming when the reaction of my cat when meteors fell.”

People chuckled.

“Speaking of cats-those stinking whiskered tyrants. Why do humans think they are cute? Let me tell you something, they are chaos in fur pants. They watch you say no and go ahead to do the very thing you don’t want them to do. They are not pets, they are tiny, hairy radioactive warlords and I say we skin them all and eat them for dinner.”

People gasped.

“Zulu.” Lisha screamed.

Somewhere in the background, Bob meowed in distress.

“Don’t test me Whiskers, I’ve got wings and talons.” Zulu squawked.

Sunshine blocked off the sound in the training field, specifically the indoor training area where the superhumans had gathered. Then, she cleared her throat, ignoring the looks of defiance from the superhumans that had gathered, answering her call. “Zulu will not save your lives in a fight. I need everyone’s attention on me.”

Some people groaned in despair. The desire to know what was happening with the broadcast was greater than they anticipated. Would there be a war between the parrot and cat?

Would this be the day Lisha finally ripped out the parrot’s feathers?

Who else would the parrot talk about?

“Today,” Sunshine barked into a megaphone, “We will be measuring your greatness, magnificence and weakness.”

A team of scientists that was already in the room unveiled the machines. Dr. Chloe, in her lab coat that was covered in glitter, with a snail hairband on her head and a coffee mug that read, “I will kill you with science,” stepped forward.

“I am Dr. Chloe, and I will be guiding you through the exercise along with my team.”

Philip raised his hand. “Should we be worried about you killing us with science?”

“If you prove to be worthless, yes.” She answered seriously. Her eyes were devoid of a smile. It almost seemed like she meant what she said. “Superhumans with strength abilities step forward.” She shouted.

Morris, Dominic and six others stepped forward.

Sunshine moved back to observe.

The Gravivas Grip hovered in the air, seeming to buzz with anticipation.

“Just squeeze and lift.” Doctor Chloe instructed.

Eager to prove that it was a walk in the pack, Morris went first. He grunted and gripped, launching it upwards above his shoulders.

“Ten out of ten.” The barbell screamed.

“Woah!” Nimo whispered, next to Sunshine. “Didn’t you say you could not lift it.”

“It was on hard mode; this is easy mode.” Sunshine replied.

Dominic received the same results as Morris. Morris was not satisfied by that declaration. The rest of the superhumans did not fair well. And the barbell was very rude and loud in its remarks.

Next was the speed test.

To save time, Sunshine had other superhumans move in. From durability, stamina, energy emission, and the rest.

During the energy emission test, she paused when Leah’s turn came. The woman proved to be a gem as the only superhuman to make five petals bloom.

“How did I do?” She flipped her hair back, smirking.

“Perfect.” Sunshine replied, brushing pollen off Leah’s shoulders. “You’re magnificent.”

Leah giggled.

Hadrian watched them from a distance, frowning. He wondered if he would have to intervene in the budding friendship. Everyone loved Sunshine, some people just loved her a little too much.

Those people were the real threats in the apocalypse.
