Chapter 336: Mother of beasts.
Sunshine pushed herself forward, her voice steady despite the horror on the screen. “That is a Crocodylus Ultimus or a mutated crocodile. The acid rain is what resulted in the creation of that abomination.” She had seen many of the like in the past. She said into the microphone, “You all need to get out of there right now, it is not just a mutated beast it is the mother of beasts.

On the screen, they noticed the more ordinary humans backing off, slowly finding their ways to their vehicles. But the superhumans had yet to move. The way Dominic and Morris were gripping their weapons, it seemed like they were willing to engage the beast.

Perhaps, it sensed that too, the crocodylus bellowed into the toxic sky.

Quickly, Sunshine said, “Morris, Dominic, this is not an option. I am ordering you to retreat. Judging from its size, it must be a mother with eggs or children somewhere in the town or close by. Those things don’t move alone, they travel in family units. If their is a mommy, there is a daddy. ”

Hades turned to Sunshine. “How do we even fight things like that.”

Sunshine exhaled slowly, frost escaping her lips. “The truth is they are not easy to fight one has to have advanced combat skills, superhuman or not.” She said. “Speed is the most important weapon you can have against them.”

“Are we giving up the town then?” Lisha asked.

Sunshine nodded. “No, we are just retreating for now in order to save as many lives as we can. While the superhumans can take it on, it will not be without consequences. We need to first find out if it is a widow with just kids or daddy is hiding in the shadows, waiting to surprise everyone with his jaws.”

“What kind of superhuman can fight such a monster?” Leah asked.

Sunshine looked at the screen, eyes brushing over Dominic’s figure. Leah’s question was ironic. Most superhumans fought a crocodylus as teams. She had only ever heard about one man doing it alone in her past life and it was, Dominic Steward.

But he was much stronger then than he was now. Maybe he could do it now…she didn’t know. What she did know was that Tommy Kirkland was too young to be out there fighting a crocodylus. The others were too green, too weak, too unprepared. On top of that, the other beasts were also waiting to attack.

This battle would have to wait for another day.

“Release the sugar and ammonia gas bombs, take advantage of the smoke to retreat.” She ordered them. “Be careful, do not startle the crocodylus. Daddy and children will shred you to death and sacrifice themselves to keep her alive.”

“They can do that!” Warren exclaimed.

Sunshine nodded. “Mutated beasts are smart. They protect her because she is the brain, the shield, the matriarch.” Her tone was calm, but her heart was pounding. Some mutated creatures were evolving already to become gigantic monsters faster than she thought it would happen.

And, she had no clue what a crocodylus was doing all the way in Busker or near the mountain for that matter. They were nowhere near a large body of water. Unless….her eyes moved the screen that was always showing live footage of the lake in the forest. It was calm, swaying with the wind.

“Could it be?” She whispered.

“Everyone is secure, we are exiting Busker now.” Major Elio shared. His words shattered through Sunshine’s trail of thought.

Everyone sighed in relief but only for a moment. They would only relax when their people were back and safe behind the gates.

“Why sugar bombs?” Leah asked.

“Because some animals are irritated by overly sweet scents.” Lisha rushed to answer.

Warren chimed in eagerly. “Its like pepper spray or that gas from skunks. You smell it and you want to get away from it as quickly as possible.”

As they waited for the teams to reach, they educated Leah on mutated beasts and how to deal with them. Leah was fascinated. The knowledge they had, she had never heard of anywhere else. Her eyes peeked at Sunshine every once in a while, wondering how she knew the things she did.

Forty five minutes later, they heard rumbling and the gates were opened. Trucks rushed into the base, driving at full speed. They did not stop until they reached the decontamination area.

“They are back.” Leah spoke as she rushed out of the command center.

The room erupted with relieved murmurs, they all followed Leah outside. A team in hazmat suits started collecting the carcasses. The vet teams collected live animals that had been brought over.

After the usual decontamination session, those who went for the mission rejoined everyone. They received a warm welcome. Sunshine called for their attention before they could be carried away.

“Alright everyone,” she said. “We’ve done enough for today. Eat, rest, patch your wounds. Tomorrow _” she paused glancing at them. “tomorrow we train, prepare and return to Busker. You all saw that thing. We cannot allow it to reach our territory. Good night and great job out there.”

She pulled Tommy aside to see how he was fairing. The teenager was excited, eager to see his parents and share his adventures.

Nimo joined Lisha to cut and edit the footage which would later be showed to the residents.

Sunshine went straight home while Hades stayed back to keep an eye on Busker and see where the crocodylus ended up. Maybe even find the rest of the deadly family.

As Sunshine stepped through the door of her house all the tiredness melted. The soft ringing of laughter and the scent of something warm and spicy filled the air.

She thought Tank was the one cooking, it turned out to be Rori.

“Mommy’s home.” She announced loudly.

“Mom!” Castiel shouted, leaping from the table, followed by White. Behind him, two other children waved excitedly, their cheeks glowing in the light.

“Castiel said he missed you guys so I brought them home.” Rori told her.

Castiel tugged her coat. “Mom, we helped grandma make dinner. I missed you so much that I drew a painting for you. And I fixed Octi the Octopus.” He clawed at her thighs, eager to be carried.

She did as he expected, lifting him and White at the same time. She kissed each on the cheek before chuckling. “My babies you are incredible,”

“She means me.” Castiel told White.

“Cass, White is younger than you. Stop fighting for attention with him.” Ariel yelled out.

The door opened. Like everyone else, Sunshine was surprised to see Hades. “Dad is filling in for me.” He announced.” Looking at Sunshine who had questions in her eyes. “Something smells good in here” he said, giving his mother a small smile.

“Grilled Mahi-Mahi with Mango Salsa.” Rori told him.

His lips broadened into an appreciative smile.

“Coconut turmeric rice.” Rori looked at Sunshine. “I know how much you like your rice.”

“My stomach appreciates you.” Sunshine laughed.

“Key lime pie for dessert.” Earl shouted, taking a second to look away from the television.

Sunshine put Castiel and White down, announcing her need to take a bath. Hades followed her into the bedroom, they took a quick shower and joined the family for dinner.

Ariel was already in the middle of an animated story about the special squads. His words tumbled out like a waterfall. How brave they were, how fast they moved, how cool they looked with their weapons and armor.

“I want to be like them when I grow a little older.” He declared proudly. Then his eyes lit up. Then his eyes lit up with an idea so sudden it nearly startled him. “Actually, what if we made a kid squad that fights smaller mutated beasts?”
