Chapter 335: The beasts of Busker.
When the gates of the base opened, Hades was already waiting. His breath came out in white gusts as he stared at the trucks that were driving in. His shoulders were relaxed in obvious relief.

He had watched bits of the fight at Sheldon’s base from the video captured by drones. But the watchers were tall and big, they had obstructed most of the drones.

Lisha had said it many times that the watchers were being deliberate. When they flew off with a superhuman, he had become certain that she was not wrong.

He was glad that was all they had done. At least, they had not flown off with his wife. As for questions on where the superhuman was taken, they could wait a moment for him to reunite with his wife.

As people disembarked, he hurried out to meet Sunshine, helping her out of the truck.

Sunshine gave him a tired nod, her boots crunching against the gravel. Behind her, the rest of the team dragged their feet, laughing and shouting after coming back from a fight with zero casualties on their side.

“Everyone, you know the drill, decontamination first.” Hades shouted, motioning toward the glowing airlock chamber. The mist inside hissed like a living thing.

The few that had been about to walk off turned around and returned. It was important but many hated the decontamination process, it always felt eternal. Also, the air pressure and chemical fog seeping through every pore had an uncomfortable sting.

Nobody was a fun of the stench of those chemicals too. Not even Sunshine. None the less, they endured because they knew it was necessary. When it was over, Sunshine’s limbs felt heavy, her head buzzing with static.

“You should rest; I will wait for the remaining squads.” Hades told her when she came out on the other side with hair that looked like a bird’s nest.

Sunshine shook her head, looking at the sky. “It will be dark soon; they should be back by now. We should make sure that they did not find obstacles in Busker that they could not handle.”

Two groups had left the base at roughly the same time. One that went to Sheldon’s base and one that went to Busker to begin dealing with the mutated beasts which lived there.

That group had not yet returned.

They both headed straight to the command center and when Major Elio and O’Toole saw this, they followed.

Inside, the air was tense. Screens lined the walls, displaying live feeds from Busker. The very first face she saw in the middle was Dominic’s. He was leading a team, fighting mutated beasts.

Sunshine tilted her head to the right and noticed that Leah was in the room with them. She was wrapped in a thick grey coat, her face pale but alert. “You should be in bed,” she said.

Leah shook her head. “I am not that weak. Everyone is pulling their weight around here so I should do something as well. Besides, it is not every day that you hear about an entire town filled with mutated beasts.”

Sunshine’s tired expression softened into a smile. Leah would give every excuse in the book but never admit that maybe she was there because a part of her wanted to keep an eye on her husband.

“I hope you don’t mind that I am here.” Leah moved closer to Sunshine.

“Not at all,” Sunshine said gently.

Leah opened her mouth to respond, but the room suddenly erupted with startled gasps. Every head turned to the main screen.

The feed showed Dominic’s squad now trapped inside a half collapsed wooden building. Mutated beasts circled the ruins_hyenas, but not the kind nature had made. Their hides shimmered with hard plastic ridges and their tails stretched like living blades glinting under the sickly orange sky. It was their laughter which echoed like skulls rattling that terrified everyone.

“Razorhounds.” Sunshine said. “One of the most intelligent and tenacious of mutated beasts. They know how to trap their prey by acting frivolous strategically.”

“One of them used its tail to stab a soldier in the abdomen. The iron shirt helped stop most of the attack, but the soldier was still injured.” Warren shared.

The hyenas on the screen were stabbing into the building with their tails.

“Those tails….” Hades muttered. “They are two meters long at least.”

The men and women in the room began to murmur hopelessly. “This a very bad situation, send back up.”

Father Nicodemus stood abruptly, his coat swaying like a tattered flag. ” I will lead the squad.” He flew out through the door.

Major Elio hurried out after him. Sunshine settled into a chair meanwhile and watched the fight with clenched fists. She wanted to go out and help, but she was determined to let them learn and handle mutated beasts on their own.

Tommy had gone with that group, and he was hurling bolts of lightning that cracked through the air, but the hyenas danced away with uncanny reflexes_as though they could read his mind.

Greg the superhuman with metal skin was also there, he was outside, throwing metallic punches and kicks at the hyenas. Some whimpered, some laughed.

Nala and a team arrived in cars, throwing flash discs in the air. The devices exploded midair, flooding the ruins with blinding light. The hyenas recoiled, their tails thrashing wildly.

That single second of distraction was all the trapped team needed. They came out of hiding, guarding their injured squad mate.

As others rushed him to a safety in the car, Dominic’s sword sliced through the air with inhumane speed. A hyena lunged; he met it mid jump, slicing through its head to its tail perfectly in the middle. Its pieces fell from above.

He landed on two feet like a big cat before rolling over and cutting off the head of another hyena.

“Damn, he is fast.” Lisha said.

The surprises were not over just yet. He picked up on hyena by the end of the tail, swung it in the air, slamming it into two others that were coming at him. And when he was finished, he sliced off the tail with a sword before kicking the beast in the head.

The others followed his lead, Lucia swung her blade with wide arcs, while a superhuman used kinetic pushes to throw the smaller beasts against the ground before shooting them in the head.

But the respite didn’t last. The howls grew louder; it was almost like the hyenas were calling for help. Other beasts came, surrounding the cars and humans. Not just hyenas but dogs, foxes, black and red bears. Even raccoons and rabbits!

“Oh…..” Lisha covered her eyes.

Sunshine stood up.

Before the animals could lunge, smoke filled the air and more soldiers appeared.

“Looks like the plan worked.” Warren smiled. “They have lured out as many beasts as possible.”

The beasts were outnumbered, and this increased with the arrival of Father Nicodemus and others as back up reinforcements.

“We have got this.” Warren declared confidently.

From a distance came the thunder of heavy footsteps _ deep, echoing, enough to make the cameras on the ground in Busker tremble.

“What is that sound?” Lisha whispered.

On screen, the drones caught sight of it first_ a giant crocodile like monster, scales rippling with black crystal and frost. It’s eyes glowed molten yellow as it moved through the ruins.

“Good God….” Hades murmured. “Care to repeat your words, Warren?”
