Chapter 330: A trip to Sheldon’s base.
Sister Anna looked exasperated. She threw her hands up and huffed. “I am here because I am part of the committee. Father Nicodemus and I are part of you because we are the voice of morality and spirituality.”
“You are a nun!” Sheldon exclaimed, loudly, his eyes widened. “No way she is a nun dressed like that.”
Even though most people in the room were already accustomed to sister Anna’s new dress code, they still gave her a once over. In turn, she shrunk back in the chair, wishing she had not spoken up and drawn attention to herself.
She reached into her jacket for a scarf and quickly covered her hair. “My dress code has little to do with my faith and conviction.” She spat at Sheldon.
He smirked. “Such a shame.”
“Keep looking at my sister and you will be picking your teeth from the ground.” Carson threatened Sheldon.
There was some momentary silence as people waited for anyone whose heckles were raised to be lowered. In the meantime, they continued to feast on their lunch. Most were almost done.
Sunshine was already deciding in her mind that this would be Sheldon and Sister Anna’s last meeting unless there was a need for their specific presence. She could even understand Sheldon a little but not the nun. Where was room for spirituality in the midst of all they were dealing with?
Rolling her eyes, Lisha broke the silence first. “Sister Anna, you are too soft for the job. Today, we do not need to hear about compassionate solutions. We do not need the Holy spirit. I don’t have anything against miracles, heck if one could end the apocalypse, I am all for it.
But the reality is that we need draconian measures in order to survive. Those people will kill us if they have to, to take this base and get their hands on our supplies. It is us or them and I for one am choosing us.”
Carson looked in his sister’s direction. “She’s right, some of them were once residents here. They know we have stores full of food and other supplies. They even know where those things are. If one strong superhuman rises from that group, they could give us hell.”
Father Nicodemus winced but remained silent.
Sunshine glanced at him and then looked at those around the table. “Even if they don’t steal, they could just burn our food or the base to make us suffer.”
“And that is why I said we turn that damn base into a prison that we control.” Sheldon said, visibly frustrated.
Dominic raised his voice and his glass that was half filled with orange juice. He looked like he was about to toast. ” I have recently learned a terrible lesson. Leaving dangerous people alive is putting yourself and your family in danger. If they are your enemies, the kind that wish to slaughter you, execute them immediately. Do not leave anything to chance.”
Carson covered his sister’s mouth.
“Most of the people we sent out were troublemakers, but they had not committed any crime worth being locked up forever.” Sunshine stated. “The problem we have now is that there is no contact from them.”
Hades added. “And they have weapons.”
“I say we attack them before they attack us.” Hadrian said. “We all know that if they get the chance, they will attack.”
Father Nicodemus jolted up.
“Here we go with his crap.” Sheldon growled.
The priest hesitated to speak initially but finally did. “Here me out first. We are stronger in terms of weapons and strength. If they are truly our enemies, we should ask them to surrender to us peacefully first. If they choose otherwise, we employ other measures.”
Sunshine inserted her fingers in the overall pockets. “The priest is not wrong. We need to first discover if contact was cut off because someone has taken over the base or the people inside are dead.”
“Not dead.” Lisha said, pointing a fork at the screen. “The drone we sent to monitor shows heat signatures inside some of the buildings. Nobody has come outside since morning, not even to clean up the dead rats or bodies. But they are not dead.”
Sunshine stood up and placed her hands on the table. “Lunch is over, everything else is on hold. The priority now is to put Sheldon’s base under our control.”
Hadrian rose. “I’ll go with Major Elio and start preparing the squads.”
With a nod from Sunshine, they left. One by one, other people stood up, each with a duty to fulfill.
“Wait!” Cory shouted. “What about us? What do we do next?”
Hades looked at them. “You can return to your bases and inform your residents of the new changes.”
Sheldon raised a brow. “We are staying in the first wall, right? I just want to be certain.”
“Unfortunately, yes.” Came Sunshine’s displeased voice. “But not in our building.” She quickly added. “We have a section of the residence that was closed off in preparation for people like you. Wealthy and willing to pay rent. Think of it as your own rich neighborhood, a mirror of the luxury that you are used to.”
The billionaires smiled. They liked what they were hearing.
Kris grinned. “Can we still have our club and casino?”
“Whatever pleases you.” Sunshine said. “As long as you do not disturb the peace and quiet of the first wall. Otherwise, you will find yourselves in the second wall or even the third wall.”

The winds that afternoon were cruel as usual. They did not howl like a storm but hissed, icy sharp and relentless. It took exactly thirty-seven minutes for the squads to be prepared and assembled beside vehicles in the first wall.
Major Elio, as always was in the lead vehicle. They would need his vision for the mission they were undertaking.
Drones went ahead and vehicles followed. Laughter accompanied them as they listened to Philip and Siegfried’s newest jokes on superhumans.
Laughter stopped when it was time to overcome the first obstacle: The landmines. They all knew mines surrounded Sheldon’s base like a circle of death, no one except Sheldon knew where they truly were. But with the heavy snow, acid rain and meteorites, even he could not predict whether some had moved.
But, as the bomb squad prepared to go in and start working, Major Elio’s walkie-talkie came to life.
“This is Captain Blair, for Major Elio. Mr. Sheldon forgot to share with you all that he had a fail-safe in case he ever needed to escape his base. He had an electronic safety interlock inserted into the mines and he has provided the signal. It is still accesible. Miss Lisha and her team are preparing to block the firing circuit in five, four, three…..”
Suddenly, Sheldon’s voice overlapped with captain Blair’s. It was shrill, indignant and trembling.
“I am suing this bitch! I am filing a lawsuit! This bitch assaulted me! I am way above you….you hear.”
The soldiers who were waiting for the all clear declaration were confused. Was it safe or not?
Major Elio shut his eyes briefly and cursed silently. “What happened?” He asked, his tone dangerously calm.
Blair’s reply came clipped and dry. “He tried to get handsy, so I broke his hand.”
Sunshine groaned in frustration. “That lecherous He goat! Good for you Blair. What about the landmines?”
In the background, Sheldon’s muffled whine could still be heard. “Good! She broke my hand! She broke my_”
They heard him screaming again. Everyone guessed Blair had hit Sheldon again.
Then her voice came from the radio. “All clear but proceed with caution just in case.”
