Chapter 326: Damage.
Gasps rippled through the air. The rest of the women recoiled in disgust.
“You cannot be serious!” One said.
Sunshine smiled and said nothing else. The reaction of these people did not surprise her. They were still living a soft life in the apocalypse. How would they know what it was like to go hungry for weeks, eating anything that looked like meat or had the ability to fill the stomach?
What would they do if they ever went outside and met cannibals? But she did not have plans of making them eat rat meat and in all honesty, she would not do it either. Not unless she had no choice. She planned to see if there was a market for the rat bodies, even if they were dead.
Maybe someone in another world had a need for them.
Suddenly, they heard an explosion, and everyone looked up. A parrot was heard screeching abnormally loudly and fleeing. It did not make it far before falling out of the sky while cursing.
“Major Elio and Zulu had a conflict, there is no emergency. I repeat, there is no emergency.” A comms officer announced. “And Zulu is not dead, just temporarily err….sleeping.”
Their hearts settled.
“I bet it pooped in a place that had already been cleaned again.” Someone said.
“It has been doing that all morning, taking revenge because the lawyers refused to accept her lawsuit. It is about time someone taught that parrot a lesson.”
“But if she is sleeping, who is going to do the morning talk show?”
Sunshine smiled. Lisha would do the morning show or someone else from the entertainment department. She was sure they would be glad to work without the parrot.
As the cleanup continued, Sunshine toured the base, checking on the work being done. In the third wall, she bumped into Sister Anna, working with Hadrian’s team that was filling the holes and repairing the roads.
She walked to the woman and tapped her on the shoulder. “Morning Sister Anna, I almost didn’t recognize you without a veil on your head.”
Sister Anna’s lips tightened. “I left the house in a hurry this morning. When will the church be opened again? We have not had mass for over a month…no two. It is not right.”
“Father Nicodemus mentioned it to me.” Sunshine replied. “I already told him to go ahead and open it again. As long as he keeps his wings tucked and nobody kneels at his feet, I will not have a problem with it.”
Sister Anna blinked. “But the wings were a gift….”
“Do you want me to keep the church closed?” Sunshine cut in.
The sister folded her lips and smiled. “Thank you for opening the church again. The Lord will reward you greatly for all you do for his people.”
Sunshine tapped her on the shoulder. “And you, Sister Anna.” She looked over the nun. “You look radiant. If you were not smaller and shorter than Carson, I would think that the two of you are twins.” She was dressed exactly like her brother today, black cargo pants and a white shirt. Both had donned a thick green sweater on top and military boots.
Sister Anna’s smile faded. She turned around and got back to work.
Sunshine giggled as she walked away from the nun. Frankly, teasing the woman was one of the highlights of her days in the apocalypse.
Two hours later, Sunshine found herself at the quarantine section of the medic bay. The air inside smelled like antiseptic and recycled heat. Doctors in hazmat suits moved between sealed beds where those that had been bitten lay resting.
Her gaze caught Nimo through the glass partition. Her friend had been placed in a bed close to the tall glass window deliberately.
Sunshine knocked on it. Nimo turned over, smiled and waved.
“You cannot be in here unless you want to become a permanent resident like me.” Nimo said through the walkie-talkie she kept under her pillow. Goose down, a gift from Rori.
Sunshine shrugged. “How do you feel?”
“I feel fine….I think.” Nimo answered, an expression of disappointment crossed her eyes.
“Talk to me.” Sunshine said.
Nimo sighed. “Four people that were bitten awakened last night. I was honestly hoping to be one of them.”
Sunshine studied her. “Nimo you will awaken, do not let that bother you.”
“Says the spectra human!” Nimo mumbled.
“Spectra human?” Sunshine repeated.
Nimo nodded. “A superhuman with more than just one superpower. The secret on your dual abilities is out; it was all everyone could gossip about last night after the battle against the rats.”
“Make that three.” Sunshine mumbled.
Nimo squealed. “Explain….fast.”
“Think Carson.” She replied.
Nimo opened her mouth to say something, but no words came out.
[And your body is now toxin or poison immune. All these are side effects of the Dexa-Q which is still present in your bloodstream.
This could be one of the reasons why it is banned. Superhumans should not have more than one ability as they fail to maximize the strength of a single ability while training the others.]
Sunshine was glad for a body that was immune to poison, but the words of the system also worried her. Ice was her strongest ability. Would it weaken as other powers awakened?
And how many more abilities would she awaken?
“Have you seen Dwayne?” Nimo asked.
Sunshine sighed.
Nimo’s face fell.
“Actually, he did pass by yesterday, but he stopped at the door. I am sure he came to see you. Who else in here has ties to him?” Sunshine replied.
Nimo perked up and they started talking about other things until the doctors stepped out of the isolation chambers.
Dr. Griffin who formerly who was in charge of the infectious disease department went to Sunshine and she ended her conversation with Nimo.
“Madam President.” He started with a smile that was angling for praise. “We have vaccinated everyone on the base. Nobody has showed signs of infection so far. I would like to discuss holding an infection awareness camp or seminar on the base.
Two people tried to hide away when we were inspecting residents for bites. They acted out of fear, but it worries me. What if it was something more serious? Wouldn’t those in hiding infect others?”

Hades and Dwayne were in still in shock. The damage sustained by Jin’s base hit them like punch to the gut from the moment they arrived.
They had started with Jin’s because it was overwhelmed the most in the footage. Reaching it had been troublesome because the rats had dug deep holes in the ground, so they needed to navigate the road carefully, taking nearly two hours.
The outside perimeter wall which was unfinished had dead bodies. The second wall was riddled with bullet holes as was the first one. The old gate had collapsed, and a new one was being put up. Inside, piles of rats were positioned in different parts of the compound.
Hades stopped the soldiers that were going to set them on fire. “My people will definitely be here for them.”
He didn’t know why his wife wanted the rats, but he would make sure she got them.
They walked on and found more dead bodies that were covered with sheets. Hades’ chest tightened, the sight of death never got easier.
Jin’s girlfriend Phaedra saw him first. A tall brunette woman bundled in a fur coat that looked very expensive at first sight. She was pacing furiously near the entrance shouting orders at everyone within ear shot.
“Hades” She waved her hand. “I cannot thank you enough for sending us help last night. If your people hadn’t shown up when they did, we would all be rat food.”
He gave her a respectful nod. “Where is Jin?”
She threw her hand dramatically. “Gone! Ran off to Jon’s base the second things went crazy. He promised to bring help and left all of us here to fight for ourselves including his mother! I cannot believe I considered marrying that prick.” She smiled sultry way. “You wouldn’t happen to be in need of a second wife or mistress, would you?”
