Chapter 325: Upgraded robot leg.
There was one thing Sunshine never imagined she would wake up to in her life. A bear butt in her face! It was not unusual to wake up to White’s warmth in their bed. But, he was usually a proper sleeper, unlike the previous night it seemed.
She gently shoved the butt out of her face and the little bear wiggled and made some disgruntled sounds. With many already prepared milk bottles in the space, she took one and pushed the nipple into White’s mouth.
The little bear did not open his eyes but he held the bottle tightly and started suckling. She covered him and then shook Hades awake.
Like White, her husband was not too pleased to be disturbed. It had been a long night. They had eaten dinner at midnight and gone to bed at around two in the morning.
“I have to fix your leg.” Sunshine told him.
He groaned and turned over, burying his bed in the pillow.
Sunshine touched his back and vanished into the space with him. She took him to the living space as he had never seen it.
“Well this is new.” Hades rubbed his eyes, looking around the unfamiliar territory. “Where are we?”
“In my space.” She told him.
She waved her hand and the workstation appeared beside the pond. She wanted to fix the leg in a place with a nice view.
“Is that a garden?” He pointed at the area with sprouts of green and gold.
She nodded while leading him to lay down on the table. “I am growing some of the seeds we got from Sheldon here. Since this space is special, I figured it would ripen the grain early and produce even finer seeds. As long as the food problem is solved, our conquest for territory will be smoother.”
Hades drew in a deep breath. “I see fish. Can we eat it?” Fish was his favorite food. He could see potential in the space as a fishing ground.
Sunshine looked at the water. It held some of the fish she had brought from the Levi’s sea. But eating it would have to wait.
She unscrewed a side of robot leg. The problem was simple_ a loose actuator cable had been jolted out of it’s slot. The mechanism that controlled balance and rotation was flickering, making the left leg stiff and uneven.
She had noticed the previous night that Hades’ balance was off despite his claim that the leg had fixed itself. Sunshine adjusted the googles she usually had on when she was working, tapped the joint twice with a spanner, and the servos whirred back to life.
Then, she decided to give Jo-Stride some upgrades so some parts had to replaced with new ones and not the cheap stuff like she usually used.
As she worked, Hades shifted awkwardly. “Thank God, Jo-stride is going to be okay.”
“Hold still,” she said.
His robotic leg was spread out like disassembled armor, wires glinting silver blue, some twitching like little snakes. Hades tried peeking at it and she pushed his chest back down.
“You are restless like Castiel.” She told him.
He disagreed. “I am calm like Ariel.”
Sunshine snorted.
“What do you think Dominic’s ability is?” He asked, trying to sit up again before he was pushed back down. “Is he a giant or a superhuman with super strength?”
Sunshine pursed her lips for a moment. “I am not sure. I do not know what it is but I think it has something to do with the mind. I told you he could make people do things that they were not willing to do.”
“Imagine that kind of power in the wrong hands.” Hades said. “Maybe we should not keep him here. He could make us give up ownership of our base.”
Sunshine shook her head. “He never used his abilities for evil in my past life. He is a rational man. I hope he will stay that way. If his ability is mind control, I will find something that can protect us.”
“How is his wife doing?” Hades asked, scratching his neck.
Sunshine wiped grease from her fingers. “Better I hope. I offered to help her find Moon.”
He sat up abruptly. “You did what!?” The shock was floating in his eyes clearly. “Does this mean you are leaving the base to follow them on a hunt that could last years?”
“Of course not.” Sunshine replied. “I have a base to build, territory to conquer, food to grow. With all the mutants, mutated beasts and watchers, Moon is the last enemy on my list. I cannot waste my second chance hunting her instead of living my life.”
“You should have killed her while we were still at the Quinn manor.” He said. She had told him all about how Moon killed her in her last life. He did not think he would have had the patience to spare a person that did that to him if he was in her shoes.
He would have shot her the moment he discovered he had been reborn.
Sunshine motioned at him to get back into position. “I think about that sometimes and I did consider it for a moment. But, I also thought about reality. There was a big chance that I would be arrested. Where would I find time to stock up and prepare this base then?”
Hades agreed silently, she spoke the truth. Then he wondered if she could have killed Moon and hidden her body in the space. At the beginning of the apocalypse, they would have dumped her body in the forest or buried her in the concrete and built over her body.
As he worked through those scenarios in his mind, she worked in silence until the job was done. Sunshine activated it, and the leg straightened with a soft hiss of air pressure.
“Try walking.” She said.
Hades stood cautiously, shifting his weight. “Feels good and smooth.”
“It is stronger.” She handed him a small packet of pain relieving gel. “You can kick a house down in five kicks now. I am certain you are stronger than Dominic now….leg wise.”
A familiar ding echoed in her head.

“Sweet.” Sunshine murmured.
Hades whistled as he twisted the leg around. “I want to challenge Dominic to a sparring match.”
“I strongly advise against that, a race perhaps.” Sunshine said.
“Honey, have some faith in your husband.” He looked at her suspiciously. “Why do I suspect that you would be supporting my opponent.”
Sunshine laughed. “Oh, you know me so well. Come on, time to wash up and have breakfast.”
The house was quiet, the children had spent the night at their grandparent’s place and were going to stay with them for the rest of the day.
After breakfast, they left the house. In the base, the cleaning operation was already in full swing. Some parts of the ground was littered with dry blood. Water hoses roared as soldiers washed the walls and ground.
Hades left with Dwayne to arrange squads to check on the other bases.
Warren approached Sunshine and came jogging over, his shirt had splattered with a mix of dirt and blood. “Cleaning is finished in the third and second walls. The bodies of the dead rats are still locked in the decontamination zone. How do you want to dispose of them?”
“Dispose?” Sunshine sounded offended. “Move them to the cold storage warehouse.”
The group of women cleaning the ground close by froze-mid action, glancing at each other with uncertainty. One of the women spoke. “Please tell me that she’s not……planning on making us eat them.”
Sunshine caught her words and smirked. “You will never know how delicious a rat is until you have starved for an entire month.”
One of the woman vomited.
