Chapter 320: Nimo’s romantic troubles.
“Hot stuff!” Nimo whispered sharply into Sunshine’s ears.

Sunshine shrugged. Hadrian always seemed serious and intense and yet at times, he said or did something funny that was unlike him.

“I am pretty sure your husband is turning into a green faced jealous monster.” Nimo whispered, keeping her voice low because Festus had remained back to keep an eye on Leah. “Also, you were right about Dominic being hot. It should be a crime for a man to be that attractive when he is grieving.”

Sunshine pinched Nimo’s waist. “It should be a crime to talk about his attractiveness while we are standing right outside his wife’s hospital room.”

Nimo pouted. “I didn’t say I was going to jump his bones or anything, I am just commenting. And Dwayne is two times hotter.”

Sunshine frowned. The conversation was really not one to be had where they were. She pulled Nimo and they went off in search of Dr. May. Sunshine gave instructions for Leah to be moved to the first wall medic bay.

Within twenty minutes, she was wheeled out on the bed, and an ambulance took her to the first wall. Naturally, Sunshine and Nimo followed, going all the way to the medic bay.

They didn’t stay with Leah but got some coffee and sat on one of the benches outside.

“I can’t believe your aunt is dead.” Nimo said, “And that your cousin was brazen enough to accuse her own mother of doing the poisoning.”

Sunshine gulped down the coffee she had just sipped. “It’s Moon, she is capable of anything.”

“There should be a limit to evil. Children should be off bounds. They are innocent, how can one bear to harm them?” Nimo said, eyes glued to the children that were playing in the medic bay playground, which was outside the hospital, next to the hospital gardens.

Sunshine sipped her coffee slowly, thinking of her own sons. For some reason, she thought about the little girl whose mother had trained and sent to Castiel, the gold digger as Lisha called her repeatedly.

“Dwayne has rejected all my invitations to watch a movie?” Nimo suddenly switched the topic.

Sunshine laughed slowly, “That is not surprising. I told you; he has not dated anyone since his wife and child died. The mountain you want to climb is very steep. Why can’t you find a nice, sweet man with no baggage? I like Dwayne but….that man is frozen in time romantic wise.”

She froze her now empty cup of coffee, ensuring that it was solid like a rock. “Like this.”

Nimo arched her brows. “Put that cup under the sun for a while and it will melt.”

Sunshine smiled. “So, you think you are the sun that will make him melt.”

“You made Hades Quinn melt.” Nimo muttered.

Hades appeared before them before she could get an answer in. “There you are. Dominic says that he doesn’t feel comfortable leaving his wife’s side, so he is in the medic bay. I found it odd that he would leave her at such a time honestly.”

Nimo excused herself. It was time to go play pretend in the medic bay while keeping an eye on the new arrivals.

Sunshine stood up and walked into the medic bay with Hades. “Any caring man would do the same.” She murmured finally. “As long as they are not eager to leave, we still have time to convince them to join us.”

Hades gave a small grunt of agreement. He was torn about this Dominic matter.

“How is the task of clearing roads on the mountain going?” She asked, her tone turning brisk.

He hesitated. “Suni, no official matters. You have done enough already. Rest. Focus on recovery.”

A faint smile tugged her lips. “I am fine, I feel normal but…to put you at ease, I will stay here and rest but only if you give me updates often. Otherwise, I will go and check things for myself.”

Hades sighed, frustration softened into affection. He pushed the door of the room open and helped her inside as if her legs were too weak to work. “Deal.” He said finally as he helped her settle back in the bed. “So far all is good. The squads have cleared out mutated monster dens.

Philip got his fox fur…or should I say, Lisha got fox fur. The building team is almost finished with cutting the trees in the way. If nothing changes, the road to Busker will be clear by tomorrow.”

“Did Ariel approve the concrete?” She asked.

He pursed. “He advised us to use more stone than concrete. The kid had all this research comparing the structural support, traffic, vehicle types, drainage…”

Sunshine laughed. Hades continued on with the tales of Ariel and the management team.

When he finally left, she left the room and paid a visit to Nusra. Doctors had told her that the operation was a success and Nusra was already in physiotherapy.

She found the woman in physiotherapy and decided not to disturb her; Sunshine watched through the glass window. To her surprise, Nusra was not just learning how to walk, she was running already!

Her metallic prosthetic leg blurred on the treadmill, the physical therapists and doctors watching her like she had come from another world. Their expressions were a mix of awe and disbelief.

Sunshine knew why. There were two reasons, and one was that Nusra was superhuman. The other was that she had personally upgraded the prosthetic. From the smile on Nusra’s face, Sunshine could tell that she was happy with the results.

She felt something swell in her chest__pride, maybe or joy on Nusra’s behalf. With the upgraded prosthetics, she could help many people in future. By the time the apocalypse ended in her last life, half of the population around the world had missing limbs. And Cassius had sold the upgraded ones so expensively that only those with money could afford them.

She would not be like him, greedy at the expense of the rest of humanity. She turned and quietly made her way back to her room. To pass time, she read one of the repair manuals and fell asleep while at it.

Until Nimo’s soft knock woke her up. Her finger was hovering around Sunshine’s nostrils, measuring her breath.

“Hey…sorry I woke you.” Nimo said. “I was checking on you.”

Sunshine rubbed her eyes and sat up. “How are things out there?”

“Good, the kids are in the gardens with Rori.” Nimo sat at the edge of the bed. “They are having a picnic.”

“And you? You seem….”

Nimo cut in. “Heartbroken? I have seen Dwayne, and he looked me in the eye and turned around. He is avoiding me now.”

She squeezed onto the bed and laid down, sighing sadly.

Sunshine smirked weakly. “I am not surprised. I told you that your heart would be broken.”

Nimo’s lips twisted, the spark in her tone dimming. “Death ends a relationship, not a life. I don’t think his wife would want him to mourn her forever.”

“How do you know?” Sunshine quizzed.

Before Nimo could respond, the door opened. Dr. Choi stepped in for his evening rounds, clipboard in hand.

“Good evening, Mrs. Quinn.” He greeted, scanning her vitals only the tablet. “Good news, you are fully healed, and I am officially discharging you.”

“This is why you are favorite doctor, Doctor Choi.” Sunshine smiled. “How is Leah Steward?”

Dr. Choi clicked his tongue. “She is the panda in our zoo. Every doctor is scrambling to treat her because she somehow came out of what was supposed to a two-day coma in two hours!!

It is a medical marvel. Anyway, she is awake and she tried to blast us with her wind, but the suppressants are keeping her under control for now. She has eaten a little but…..she won’t stop crying.”

Sunshine exchanged a look with Nimo. Without another word, they both rose and followed after the doctor.

Outside Leah’s room, they found soldiers escorting doctors, nurses and some spectators away. Dominic was sitting on a bench, elbows on his knees, head lowered in defeat. The others who accompanied him stood quietly nearby, their eyes dark with shared grief.

“How is she?” Sunshine asked.

“She doesn’t want to see anyone.” Dominic said hoarsely.

Sunshine stepped forward anyway, her tone firm but gentle. “Let me try talking to her.”

He gave her permission to go in and she took it. Inside, Leah sat on the bed, pale and hollow-eyed, hands trembling as she wiped away another tear.

When she saw Sunshine, her lips tightened.

“If you have come to know when we are leaving, we’ll be gone tomorrow. Dominic is sure that Moon is not here, so this was a wasted trip.” she said, her voice breaking halfway.
