Chapter 317: The fan girl.
“Dominic Steward.” Major Elio repeated the name.
A squeal came from Sunshine’s mouth. But quickly, she covered it to hide her excitement. What she did not notice was the frown on her husband’s face.
She also didn’t notice Nimo’s eyebrows shooting up or Lisha’s jaw dropping.
Major Elio was startled by Sunshine ‘s reaction and so was everyone else_ especially Dr. Choi who was just entering the room.
He stepped forward, his voice laced with concern.
“Mrs. Quinn, please lay back down and avoid being excited unnecessarily.” he said gently, raising a calming hand. “Your vitals only stabilized in the night, and we still have no idea how you lost so much blood. Your blood cells are not….I don’t know how to put it.”
“I said something was not right.” Earl declared. He gave Ariel a look that said, ‘see, I told you so.’
Sunshine meanwhile remained in the sitting position, hardly listening to the doctor. Her eyes were burning with something no medicine could treat_ recognition, dread, excitement and purpose. There was a spark, like that of a dog that had seen its favorite toy.
“Are you sure its Dominic Steward and his wife too….Leah. He is hot and she is cool.” She said with glee.
Major Elio stared at her like he did not recognize her. And so did everyone in the room.
“How hot are we talking?” Lisha asked.
“Hot enough to make her squeal.” Nimo muttered.
“Okay, everyone out.” Doctor Choi declared.
Only Rori moved. She woke up Castiel and then gestured for Earl and Ariel to follow her to the medic bay cafeteria.
Doctor Choi figured nobody else was leaving so he left. There were other patients in the hospital that he needed to see.
“Do you want to meet him?” Major Elio asked Sunshine.
Hades winced and shot a look at Major Elio, one that carried both warning and irritation with crumbs of jealousy. Mostly, he was displeased because Elio had brought the matter to his wife directly. They had all agreed, no administration talk around Sunshine until she had fully recovered. He believed that Fortress four could manage a few days without relying on her so much.
Major Elio shook his head regretfully. “Believe me Hades, I did not want to bring this to her.” He said, his voice was taut. “But this seems like something….Sunshine would want to know. The superhumans outside are requesting to specifically speak to the base leader, you or Sunshine Quinn. They obviously know the two of you are here. There was something about their facial expressions and eyes…it almost seems like they came for war.”
The room grew heavy. The air monitors on the wall beeped faintly, marking a sterile silence.
Sunshine closed her eyes for a fleeting second, forcing her racing mind to focus. “And who did you say led them?”
Major Elio rolled his eyes. “Must I repeat this again? Dominic Steward. I assume he is in charge because his wife did not say much. That is if she is his wife as we are all assuming.”
Sunshine pulled herself up and ripped the needle out of her hand. “I have to speak to him in person.”
Hades moved fast, crossing the room in two strides and catching her before she could stand. “You are not going anywhere….I will go and meet them.” He said firmly.
Nurse Kendall pushed into the room, “What are you all doing? She should be resting.” She gasped. “Your hand is bleeding again. Did you rip the needle out? Haven’t you lost enough blood?”
“I am fine!” Sunshine’s voice rang through the room, loud enough to startle the room into silence. “You all do not understand, Dominic is not the kind of man who would come here for nothing. He has his own base, something important brought him here. He is the kind of superhuman we need on our side so make sure nobody says or does something stupid. We need to look like a responsible base, not flame farters with a parrot that talks shit.”
Her shout echoed, bouncing off the white walls. Her breathing came hard and fast, her body trembling with urgency. Major Elio’s words still echoed in her ear; they came for war.
Even if she knew she would win if they came for war, there would be casualties. Dominic was not feared for nothing.
Hades took a slow breath, studying her. “Then tell me.” He said softly “what is it about this man that has got you all rattled? Mind you, I already tried to recruit his wife and failed.”
Sunshine pressed her lips tightly, refusing to speak with so many curious gazes around her. Her eyes darted around the room; she didn’t want these people knowing about the rebirth.
Hades caught on quickly. “Everyone, out.” he ordered.
“Now!” Nimo said urging for them to leave.
The room cleared fast, only when the door slammed shut behind Hadrian did Sunshine speak again.
She sank back slightly, her voice dropping to a grave whisper. “Hades, I mentioned Dominic to you already. He was one of the most powerful men in the apocalypse. Like top five. He is not the kind of man that you ignore.
He was ruthless but fair, if you were part of his inner circle, he would guard your life like his own. If you crossed him…..” she shook her head, her expression darkening. “Let’s say he doesn’t forget betrayal and he hunts his enemies down to the end of the world if he has to. There were whispers about him….the things he could make people do.” She shuddered. “Let’s just say he is not an enemy we want to have.”
Hades frowned. “Sounds like someone we should keep at a distance, kill off or use diplomacy to deal with.”
“We need him.” Sunshine said. “We have to make him join us or at least be his ally. Our expansion will reach his territory at some point. He won’t take it well, unless we are already on good terms. Maybe we can even rope him into our alliance and swallow his base.”
Hades smiled. Now this was a Sunshine he could understand. Not the squealer who looked like she had met her favorite singer or actor. “Alright.” He said reaching for the desk comm. “We’ll do it your way.” He called the reception. “Bring a wheelchair to room 12A.”
Before he could put the receiver down Sunshine was already swinging her legs over the bed. “No need love.” She said. “I can walk just fine. I am not meeting Dominic in a wheelchair.” She sniffed her hair. “I need to make my hair smell nicer. And remove all signs of sickness on my face. Do I look like my usual beautiful self?”
Hades’ brows lifted. The squealer was back! “Do you fear this guy or like him?”
She paused. “I am a fan.”
Hades sighed. There was an Alfred and now a Dominic. But Dominic was married. The thought made him smile.
Sunshine’s hand froze suddenly. She had foreign memories in her mind. Carson’s memories! His blood was running through her veins. “Is Carson alright?” She asked.
Hades nodded, taking the hairbrush from her hand. “Let me help you.”
She nodded and sat down. But her hands did not remain idle. She took wet wipes, a mirror and make up from the bag. “Clothes.” she mumbled.
It took twenty minutes to freshen up and then the couple walked out of the room. Hades kept a firm hand on her arm, preventing her from walking too fast or running off.
“If they are looking for war, we should make preparations.” He said suddenly.
She gritted her teeth. “Tell Carson and Dwayne to make some preparations while you and I speak to Dominic. Get Father Nicodemus to talk to the other superhumans he came with. He is a priest; they are easily trusted. Maybe he can coax something out of them.”
Hades laughed. The priest was probably not going to like being used like that.
