Chapter 314: Injured, unexpectedly.
Sunshine deactivated the lights and remained still.

[Phantom crays in the area. Do not startle them.]

Sunshine’s body did not move but she accessed the virtual screen with her eyes to look at the Phantom crays. A group of them was on the move. They had wings and swam gracefully. They moved in formation their tails flickering white as they swished back and forth.

“Beautiful.” she whispered.

[And extremely lethal.]

When the last one passed, she continued her descent slowly and very carefully. Already, she had figured out that rushing was not the answer in this big and deadly sea.

[Warning: proximity threshold, a spiraled Spinecaller.]

“Is it the thing that looks like a half dragon-half eel?” She asked.

[It does have an Eel-like body. It is worshiped by the Glacians as a divine sentient of the abyss. This is a baby one. It is rare to see them away from their mother’s side.]

The Spinecaller stirred ahead, its body glowed faintly blue each time it clicked, its circular mouth opening and closing as it tasted the current.

Sunshine held still, reducing her oxygen output, hoping it wouldn’t detect her. The Eel drifted closer, its mouth expanding like a blooming flower, exposing rings of teeth glinting.

Sunshine decided to distract it. She threw a mini flash disc into the water and it exploded. The Spinecaller darted away at explosive speed, vanishing into the dark.

She exhaled with relief and continued her way down. Carefully, she avoided four more predators. Whenever the light of the wet suit drew attention her way, she dimmed it. Her goal was to avoid unnecessary confrontations.

If anything started bleeding, it would attract danger, and she did not need that kind of trouble. Every once in a while, she heard the faint sound of a familiar lullaby. It made her wonder if sharks were nearby.

By 10,000 meters, her breathing had grown heavier, and she was becoming exhausted. Pressure sensors blinked amber, but the suit held. She whispered to herself, “Almost there, just a bit more.”

Suddenly that system blared.

Then agony.

Something pierced her thigh. Sharp pain exploded through her leg, and she screamed. A barbed tentacle, shimmering on the skin was embedded deep pulsing venom into her blood stream.

“What in the hell!!”

The holographic lines on the visor flashed warning, indicating that something was wrong.

[Toxic substance detected in your blood stream.] The system warned.

Sunshine’s focus was on the creature which was emerging from below. A crab like beast, it’s carapace black and ridged, eyes shining a bright light. Its claws were huge yearning to grab her. It had barbed tentacles in its abdomen, twitching violently as it tried to bring her closer to its mouth.

“Let go, you mother fucker!” Sunshine growled. She gripped the tentacle with both hands, frost spread instantly from her palms, freezing along its length. The creature thrashed, trying to wrench free, but she tightened her hold.

Sunshine combined both her abilities, electrocuting it as she froze it.

The beast gave one last loud shriek before she shattered it. The water around her turned into a mix of red and white.

Sunshine panted hard, clutching her thigh. Her own blood was seeping into the water, crimson ribbons curling upward. Her vision began to blur. “Shit!”

[Host, you are losing blood rapidly, immediate extraction recommended.]

“System I… I am almost there…..” her eyes rolled back. Darkness folded over her like a wave, the last thing she saw was the Spinecaller returning from the dark.

[Emergency extraction of host.]

Her body vanished in a burst of light just as the Spinecaller emitted a bio-sonic scream that would have scrambled the neural uplinks of her wet suit and caused hallucinations.

Hades paced the living room, every second carving deeper worry lines across his face. His digital clock ticked past 02:10 p.m.

His wife was late, that was not like her. Usually, Sunshine’s trips to outside worlds lasted exactly one hour but today she was ten minutes late.

The children had already come home, searching for her as they had plans to play games in the snow. It was not like her to ditch the plans she made with them. In her absence, he had lied to them that she had a headache and sent them to their grandparents for a sleep over.

He had continued to pace around the house. When his watch clicked 02:30, he snapped and stormed into the workshop.

Tank was inside, busy with his work.

“Where is she?” He asked the robot.

“Foreman Sunshine is not here.” Tank said to him. “I believe she left a note for you.”

“I know what the note said.” he snapped. “But she has been gone for far longer than usual.”

Just when he was about to pace again, a sharp pulse of light tore through the air. The portal flared open. After healing her with water from the pond, the system was returning her to her world for human care.

Sunshine’s body dropped to the floor, limp and her suit was soaked in blood.

“Suni!” Hades’ scream shattered the quiet. Her ran to her dropping to his knees. The floor was wet beneath her, her wet suit was split open around the thigh, but he could not see any wounds.

“Where the hell is the blood coming from?” He asked, listening to her breathing, it was shallow. “Hold on, baby….hold on.”

He told Tank to call the doctors and tell them he was taking her to the medic bay.

Hades lifted her in his arms, Jo-stride activated the super speed features. He raced down the emergency stairs and run all the way to the medic bay. His speed left others in shock.

All the medics were waiting outside; they took over the moment Hades arrived. “She is pale, looks like has lost a lot of blood,” nurse Pine shouted. “What happened to her?”

Following along as Sunshine was wheeled into the emergency room, Hades shook his head.

Two nurses tried to cut off the suit and failed.

“What the hell is this thing?” Nurse Kendall barked.

Tank stepped in and her cut it off her without harming her body. Doctors started scanning for wounds, but they found none.

“I see no signs of injury.” One shared.

“Her vitals are unstable, and she has clearly lost blood.” Nurse Pine shouted.

“Then give her blood.” Hades roared.

They put her on blood and vitamin IVs and then started conducting tests while Hades was bombarded with questions.

“What happened to her?”

“How did she lose so much blood?”

Hades had no answers, he only stood by his wife, refusing to let go of her hand.

Outside the hospital, rumors were already spreading like wildfire.

“The president was injured.”

“She had blood all over.”

They traveled so fast that reached the second wall. Justice Marley was already claiming that Sunshine was declared dead on arrival.

Some people were claiming a mutated beast had attacked her from inside the base.

Residents were anxious.

Even the watchers were curious. Pink seemed to be anxious even.

Nimo and the rest of Sunshine’s close friends and family were gathered outside the medic bay. While they sent others away, they had no plans of leaving. Not until Sunshine opened her eyes.
