Chapter 312: Camera sightings.
“Other than the watchers and things that go boom in the night like Father Nicodemus the fallen angel?” Warren replied jokingly with a cheeky smile on his face.
Hades threw a pen at him.
Hadrian turned from the console. “Mutated beasts, mutant ones, watchers, superhumans and humans. Some kids in Hunkerville ran off with one of the small dragonfly drones. We think they mistook it for a toy.”
“And the rest of the drones and cameras?” Hades asked. “I see three dark boxes up on the screen. More stolen tech?”
“No, just a weak signal.” Lisha pointed to the screen. “I am working on that. We still have visuals from Kalmoor and Busker. And like we suspected _Kalmoor isn’t abandoned despite acid rain having buried half of the town at its peak. There’s a sizeable group living there. See for yourself.”
On screen, through the lens of the small camera, Kalmoor appeared. A cluster of a half of the own that was collapsed buildings surrounded by snow mounds. Faint trails of smoke rose from the ruins, and small figures moved between them. Survivors.
Hades leaned closer. “Can we confirm numbers maybe?”
“Not yet,” Lisha replied. But definitely more than two hundred people and no more than five hundred. We are taking counting basing off the heat signature information provided by the drones.”
Hadrian nodded. “The drones are awesome. Thanks to them we know exactly what is actually on ground. I just wish they could isolate superhumans from ordinary humans.”
Sunshine’s eyes hardened. “And Hunkerville?”
Lisha brought up a blurry image_ silhouettes moving near a frozen water tower. “There are people living there as well. Surprisingly, the population is bigger than that of Kalmoor, at least two hundred thousand people. On the surface, the town almost seems abandoned and frozen even. But they found the means to live underground.”
“They definitely have a geo kinetic.” Morris said. “I have been there before, and I know they have six underground tunnels that run through the town.” He was on his feet and he turned, looking at the rest. “It used to be a mining town decades ago. Even if they hid in the tunnels, they would not have survived this long unless they did more digging and expansion during this time.”
“Not to talk of the numbers.” Warren pointed out. “Two hundred thousand people cannot live in six tunnels.”
“Maybe the underground settlements are not the work of a geo kinetic but the townsfolk.” Hades suggested. “Hunkerville is one of the places that was badly affected by the tornadoes six years ago. Quinn group contributed five million dollars to help with resettlement, supplies and building tornado shelters.”
“Didn’t someone corrupt steal the donations?” Hadrian asked.
“Clearly, not all of the money was stolen.” Warren said.
“We must inspect these towns ourselves in order to get a better understanding.” Hades said
Hadrian answered a call. “Carson says he just dropped another camera in Silverdale using the insect shaped drones.” He moved and tapped the consoles. “It in the center of the town.”
The feed flickered, and suddenly the section labelled ‘SILVERDALE’ brightened. The image steadied_ frost-hazed but clear. The town was quiet but a few men and women in thick coats walked cautiously through the snow. One group looked like a family, and they had dog that was barking, looking in the direction of the camera.
There were more buildings in this town, and it looked like seventy percent of it had survived the meteors and acid rain. This was because most buildings were built with stone and concrete thanks to the concrete factory in the town.
“It’s densely populated.” Lisha said, gesturing at the red lights which represented heat signatures. They were lighting up like Christmas trees.
Hades nodded. “Which makes sense since it is nearer to the Westbrook town. There is probably three million plus people there.”
“Busker,” Sunshine said after a moment. “Show me Busker.”
Lisha’s fingers moved swiftly. The feed shifted. What appeared made everyone in the room fall silent.
The entire region was a cratered wasteland. Buildings had been split open; roofs peeled back like torn metal. The meteor strikes had burned holes deep in the ground_ some black pits were still steaming faintly, melting the snow which filled them. Roads had melted and refrozen into jagged glass-like surfaces.
Busker had many houses built with wood and none had remained standing. It looked like a wasteland.
Nothing moved, at first. Then images showing mutated animals began to display. All kinds big and small, the entire town had become a habitat for these beasts.
“This is not good.” Warren muttered.
Sunshine exhaled slowly. “No human activity here.”
“Of course there isn’t.” Warren said. “Look at the place, it is the hell mode zoo. We can’t farm there.”
Lisha shuddered. “So many beasts there, it will take forever to kill them all.”
“Look on the positive side,” Nimo said. “All that meat is meant for us to eat.”
Glances were traded; they all were aware that mutated meat was poisonous.
“Are you high?” Lisha asked.
“No.” Nimo responded. “Suni tell them.”
Sunshine wore a triumphant smile. “Dr. Sing found a way to make the meat safe for human consumption.”
Warren smacked the table. “Now that is what I am talking about. Finally, I won’t have to count the pieces of meat in my plate.”
Laughter erupted in the room.
“Now back to the issue at hand.” Sunshine called for order. “We will hunt the animals but first, the road mapping team needs to finish their job. I believe that they already started on the job this morning.”
Morris nodded. “We are prepared to continue.”
Sunshine looked at him. “We need a big team on this, get more squads and join the group. After a second trip, we begin the hunt and reclaiming Busker.”
“Yes, of course.” Morris left immediately.
Hades and Hadrian stood up to follow him.
“Do not forget to tell them the goal here.” Sunshine said. “Mapping safe roads and dangerous areas, not hunting or showing off.”
Hades nodded, then looked at Lisha. “Any sightings on the superhuman with super speed?”
“Nope, we have planted more cameras outside, I will let you know in case something comes up.” She told her. “Or maybe we can put nosy Zula on the job.”
A chime in Sunshine’s head sounded.
[Host, door to another world opens in forty-five minutes.]
Sunshine straightened her shoulders. “Sorry you are stuck with the talkative angry parrot. I have to leave and take care of personal business. You are all doing a great job.” She left Warren, Lisha and Nimo in charge and rushed home.
On the table, she left a note for Hades, telling him where she had gone. Sunshine did not waste time; she changed into appropriate wear and vanished into the space.
Immediately, she noticed a metallic box sitting on her worktable. It was black, without any labels and sealed. Her brows drew together. “System what is this?”
[Appropriate gear for where you are going.]
She looked at her outfit and frowned deeper. Curious she touched the lid, and it slid open with a hiss. Inside lay the most advanced diving suit that she had ever seen.
It shimmered under the light when she lifted it, hues of abyssal green and gold. It almost felt alive, rippling slightly. Beside it, sat a breathing apparatus, its filters curved like gills, it’s mask transparent, yet etched with gold holographic lines that matched the diving suit.
“System? Am I going to a water world….planet, whatever?”
[To the Levias sea, to be specific. Are you excited?]
