Chapter 309: Moon’s new problem.
Zulu’s declaration had everyone smothering their laughter. However, Lisha kept in mind that the show was airing live, and the goal of this particular show was to make mutated pets likeable.

“Zulu…” She started.

The parrot continued on like it deaf to her call. “I think this show is a travesty.”

Lisha gasped. “Okay, we are going to take a quick break…..”

“No.” Zulu croaked loudly. “We are not taking a break, let me finish. You call yourselves mutated pet experts? Even the mutated hamster in the second wall has more knowledge. Your advice on our claws is a war crime.”

“How?” Doctor Gordon asked. “I have achieved positive results with two pets so far and…”

“Oh shut up you pompous old fool.” Zulu screamed.

“Cut the feed.” Lisha shouted. “Cut the feed.”

There was static suddenly and silence all around the base.

Ten minutes later, Zoe’s voice was heard through the speakers. “I would like to apologize; Miss Zulu is still undergoing reflective therapy and will no longer be allowed near microphones or children until she learns to speak responsibly.”

Lisha had her eyes covered with her hands, groaning. She had a feeling that it was not the end of Miss Zulu’s broadcasting career.

Nine days had passed since Moon, and her father found shelter at the Greenville academy. The plan was to stay only for two days; Moon had emphasized this to her father every other hour on day one. She had tried to drill it into his mind that they had a plan and needed to stick to it. But Dustin had become a stumbling block to that plan, he always had a new reason to stay.

“Just two more days,” he said at first. Then, “We’ll go when the snowstorm clears.” Then, ” It’s too dangerous to travel right now.” It was always one thing or the other.

Days had come and gone, snowstorms had risen and calmed. Mist had not been seen for seven days now. Their wounds had long healed and their exhaustion was no more. And still, Dustin was as relaxed as a dog at the beach.

And Moon was furious.

Each morning, she woke up to the same laughter in the halls, the same music, the same smell of roasted meat and cheap liquor. The same squeals of children running through halls. Their voices irritated her so much that she longed to sew their lips shut.

She did not like the people at the academy_not even one. She hated her life there, it almost seemed like she was in a miserable time loop and doing the same thing over and over again. The academy felt less like a refuge and more like a trap.

Her father on the other hand was enjoying his stay.

He smiled more than he used to, he drunk more too. He hunted with other superhumans during the day and sang songs with them by the fire at night. He had taken up the position of a professor, teaching superhuman kids, especially the pyrokinetics.

Every day, he trotted through the academy halls in a tweed sweater and glasses over his eyes. He spoke…or tried to speak like an elegant scholar. He was thriving like a dead man who had signed a new lease on life. For him, everyday was like a party.

Moon had tried a couple of times to remind him of their goal; to pull him out from whatever spell Greenville had cast over him. But each time she brought up Crosstown, he would wave her off like an irritating fly on the tip of his nose.

She had begged, forced tears out of her eyes, even threatened to go out alone. But Dustin only laughed, the sound thick with arrogance.

He told her that she would only survive thirty minutes out there before a beast ate her, if she survived that then she would be dead in four hours.

Her father had further emphasized that her threats had grown old, predictable and empty. From childhood to adulthood, empty threats were all she had.

Moon had been pondering on what to do for three days now. Dustin was right about one thing. She had threatened him way too many times and he had all the power in their relationship now. Without him, survival out there was next to impossible.

But he was also wrong because she had had enough. This time, it was different. Her words were no longer a threat. She was leaving and a part of her was certain he would follow.

But there was just one obstacle, Linda Bing.

The woman had embedded herself into their lives like smoke_unseen until it was everywhere. Somehow, she had wrapped her father around her finger completely.

He spent every evening with her. Sometimes in laughter, sometimes in whispers. And three days ago, without even speaking to her first, he had decided that they were moving in with Linda!! It was like a slap before the real one ever came.

Linda had been everywhere after that_always in their business, always at her father’s side like his wife. Each time Moon tried to talk to him, the woman popped out of nowhere to share her opinion. She was always there to caress her father’s arms press herself against him, with a smile that seduced him into staying longer and forgetting the plan.

Lately, at night, the walls could not hide their lewd sounds.

She was being forced to stay awake, listening to the woman’s voice rise and fall like an animal in the throes of a mating heat. Moon was sure that Linda was doing it deliberately. She always covered her ears, but the noise always slipped through her fingers, mocking her.

Moon was sick of it all. “I have to get out of here.” She declared for the last time. It was not the first time she was making such a declaration but tonight; while listening to Linda shamelessly scream her father’s name, she decided to lose the cowardice.

Morning came and she left her room with a bag on her back. She was not waiting a second longer to leave the academy but first, she needed to talk to her father one last time. If not that she needed his ability to keep her warm, she would be long gone.

The small dining room was loud and bright, with the smell of eggs and boiling tea.

Her father was not hard to locate for he was laughing loudly at the center table. Seated beside him was Linda Bing as always. She looked radiant, her hair pinned neatly, her lips glistening with red lipstick.

Moon sat opposite them, her appetite already gone. Her hand toyed with the knife beside her plate, tracing the serrated edge with her thumb.

“Excuse me father,” she said finally, her voice tight. “I need to speak to you in private.”

Dustin looked up with disinterest, his mouth full. “Speak then.”

“In private.” She repeated strongly.

Linda gave a signal, all those in the room left but she remained back, not even shifting her position.

Moon stared at her with revulsion in her eyes. “I said in private.”

A smirk came to Linda’s lips, leaning back in the chair. “Oh, do not mind me, dear. Your father and I will be engaged soon. We are all family here, just say whatever is on your mind…..or heart.”

Engaged! Moon screamed in her mind. Her jaw clenched. Her knuckles whitened around the knife. For a moment, she imagined slashing that smug smile right off the woman
