Chapter 299: Another egg job
Sunshine was not surprised that her eldest son had finally made a move and gotten rid of all the alcohol in the house. Ariel had been threatening to do so for a while now.
The fact that he had actually acted on his threats meant only one thing_ whatever had happened last night must have been very annoying for him.
She rubbed her temple, a dull ache spreading through her head like a slow thunder. The fragments of last night played back in hazy flashes_ laughter, clicking bottles, calling the boys icicles and exhaling mist like cigar smoke. She had also fallen off the kitchen counter while trying to do something that she could not recall.
The rest of the memory was darkness.
“No wonder my shoulder hurts.” She groaned in mild pain. Her eyes widened as she recalled why she had fallen. It was because she had been trying to steal Ariel’s cookies!
No wonder he wanted the alcohol gone.
Tank had left for a short while returned with a tray; it had hangover soup, water and painkillers. “These will make you feel better, that is what Foreman Hades said.”
“Hades? He was here?” She asked.
Tank walked back to his workstation. “Yes, he came back specifically to make that soup before your meeting.”
A smile crossed Sunshine’s lips, she took the spoon and swallowed a scoop. It was not bad at all. Hades had something he could cook without burning! With satisfaction on her face, she went on until it was done. After she swallowed a pain killer and leaned back in her chair.
She slept for about thirty minutes before the alarm she had timed woke her up. Without wasting a moment, she moved to the space to start earning points and gold. “System I need to make money. It is not cheap down here on earth.”
Today she was not interested in the small jobs, they brought in small rewards. She wanted the ones that paid well.
[Host, these are the most rewarding jobs I can find.]
The jobs lined up, from the most rewarding to the least. Immediately, her attention was pulled to the first job, mostly because it requested for her specifically.
Job request: Planet Noxian
Job description: Confidential
Requirement: Repairman Rocky and his assistant.
Rewards: A million gold coins.
Confidentiality Clause: Non-disclosure agreement required.
Sunshine leaned forward. “A non-disclosure agreement? What is this about? I didn’t sign one the last time I repaired their egg.”
She tapped on the job details, there was none, instead the confidential agreement appeared, awaiting her decision.
“System what do you think.”
[I think that this could be a high-risk Job, one that you should not take because the repairmen protection council cannot protect you.]
Sunshine winced, chewing on the thumb nail. “Something could have happened to the egg which we repaired last time, maybe it cracked again. I have to take a look and see, besides the pay is good.” She had a light bulb moment that resulted in her eyes widening. “Or another egg. You said they were not liked and others had hunted them nearly to extinction. That could be the cause of the NDA.”
[If that is possible then it could explain why the Noxians are being extra careful.]
Sunshine perused through the contract and pressed the accept button when she saw nothing bothersome. It was risky but risks often came with rewards. After she and Tank disguised themselves, a wormhole shimmered into existence beneath their feet, and they were pulled into it.
They were not familiar with the place where they were transported to. It was not a white chamber like last time. They were in a glowing tunnel of sorts with walls of oval glass and threads of gold running through them.
Sunshine blinked. “Okay….this is new. System where are we?”
[Location: Planet Noxian]
“Planet Noxian?” Sunshine was shocked. “Wasn’t the chamber from my last visit on the planet as well?”
[It’s complicated.]
She raised her eyebrows. What kind of answer was that? Sunshine touched the wall, curiosity tugging at her. An alarm blared, taking her by surprise.
“Do not touch what you are not supposed to.” A voice came from behind.
Sunshine spun. The figure that appeared behind her was human-like, draped in flowing white garments that shimmered like liquid pearl. Its skin was pale to the point of almost transparency, its eyes, square and silver blinked unnaturally slowly like a sloth in slow motion.
“Call me Asgeda.” It said flatly. “I am here to ensure you complete the job without…..incident.”
“Sunshine tilted her head. “So, are you a male or a female?”
The creature’s square eyes rolled, visibly irritated.
From the sassy stance alone, Sunshine decided. “A she then.”
“He!” Asgeda snapped, hands on hips. “I am a male.”
Sunshine smirked. “Noted.” For a species that was dangerous, Asgeda seemed to have the threat level of a butterfly.
Asgeda touched the wall and it shuddered, splitting in half. Behind it lay a chamber illuminated by soft golden light_ and in the center was a familiar basket on a raised pedestal. Inside it sat a Fossilized Noxian egg. Smaller than the last one, more delicate, as if carved from frozen glass.
Sunshine’s breath caught. Such a pretty egg, she thought. “This is a surprise, word going around is that your kind is going extinct. I….”
Asgeda rolled his eyes again. “Less talking. More working.”
“Hmm.” Sunshine approached the egg. Thousands of cracks laced it’s surface like lightning scars. “System I want an analysis.”
Three minutes later, a mechanical sound hummed in her head.
[Analysis complete.
Crack depth: 2.5 cm
Shell fragility: 78%]
“Crap!” This one is in worse condition than the last one. Can we use the same method?” She walked around the egg, observing every angle and aware of Asgeda’s eyes that tracked her sharply.
[Best repair solution is manual crypto stitching, make the stitches and sew them in directly and very careful…..I repeat, very carefully.]
Sunshine groaned softly. “Manual stitching? Great my favorite kind of migraine.”
[Host, you already have the manual, and you have trained a lot with that technique. See this as an experiment to perfect the skill. Just don’t injure the egg any further or the Noxians will kill you.]
“Yeah, thanks for increasing the tension.”
Tank moved closer. “Foreman Rocky, should I make the stitches?”
“Not necessary Tank.” Sunshine said, turning to Asgeda. “One million is not enough, this egg is younger and more fragile. I could break it just by breathing wrong.”
Asgeda’s expression remained unmoved. “Payment is fixed and the terms have already been agreed upon.”
“Then find another repairman,” Sunshine said, motioning at Tank that they leave. “Good luck.”
Asgeda looked up, speaking in a low, vibrating tone for five seconds before stopping Sunshine ” Wait! The higher ups say they’ll pay 1,300,000.”
Sunshine crossed her arms. “1,500,000, I am not touching that egg for anything lower.” She looked up like she had seen the alien doing, knowing that they were being watched.
Asgeda looked up and passed on her message. Ten seconds passed before he looked at her and said, “You will get your 1,500,000 in gold or galaxy coins.”
“Now we are talking and make it gold. I want it in writing so….” Sunshine said, flashing a grin. She waited until the system confirmed that contract details had been changed.
She set out a small basin with water and used it to materialize crypto threads around her wrists like serpentine vines.
Then the work began. No words, no distractions. Just focus. It was unlike her. Sunshine’s hands moved with practiced rhythm, threading microscopic filaments of ice into the cracks, weaving them gently like spider silk. Each movement demanded absolute precision, even her breathing was measured.
Tank did the job of measuring, stabilizing and adjusting pressure when needed.
Asgeda hovered nervously in the background, without the confidence and ease he had earlier.
Three hours passed in silence and finally the egg pulsed faintly. She sealed the crack and lifted her head, exhaling tiredly.
Sunshine rotated her neck, ignoring the sweat trickling down her neck. “Good job Tank, we are done here.” We can go home now.” She stood and stretched.
Asgeda stepped in front of her, blocking off her exit out of the chamber. “You cannot leave yet; there are more eggs to be repaired.” His voice was cold and commanding.
