Chapter 298: As crafty as Sunshine.
The reaction was instant: silence.
Hades barked a laugh that broke through that silence. “Five hundred thousand? For a kilogram! Even for hybrid seeds that amount is insane. You have got to be out of your freaking mind Sheldon.”
“Come on Sheldon, that asking price is outrageous!” Kris stated. They were all greedy for money, that much was true but even greed needed to have limits. This was especially because of the times they were living in. Fortress Four was their safety net. No hybrid seeds were worth losing it.
There was a lot of murmuring in the room and so many people had opinions to share. But, most chose to remain silent, waiting for Sunshine and Hades’ decision. At the end of the day, they would be the ones doing all the spending.
“He is joking.” Jon growled at Sheldon.
Sheldon shook his head. “Business is business.”
Hadrian stood and slapped both palms on the table. “Half a kilo can’t even plant a decent sized field! To fill up the land in Busker town we need millions of seeds. At that price, you are going to rob us clean.”
“Busker town?” Jin asked.
The other billionaires looked around curiously. They understood why the seed matter had been brought up now.
Hades waved his hand. “Swallow the curiosity Jin, I will explain later.”
Jin swallowed the contents of his coffee cup that smelled suspiciously like brandy.
“I think Mr. Sheldon has raised the price so high such that we give up on them.” Father Nicodemus was not surprised to see such greed. It had a way of corroding the soul.
Sheldon shook his head. “Everyone is charging highly for their valuables, I am simply doing the same. I have never bargained with the Quinns for their tech and other supplies. I buy your weapons at whatever price you set because I respect your business. You are trying to survive and so am I. Please don’t make everyone misunderstand me, winged Father.”
Father Nicodemus raised his brows.
Major Elio frowned. Did the wings have to be mentioned, he wondered.
The room meanwhile erupted into a storm of voices, anger spilling out like boiling oil. The Quinns knew Sunshine charged fairly for her products, her profit margins were low. Sheldon made it sound like she was exploiting him and his buddies.
“How about we take away our bubble and see how you and your seeds survive?” Warren screamed.
“You mean Sunshine’s bubble.” Sheldon challenged with a smirk.
Someone growled and a pastry flew through the air.
“Who threw that?” Hades bellowed.
Lisha shrunk in her chair.
It seemed like things were getting out of hand.
“Alright, calm down every one.” Sunshine’s voice cut through the noise. To further make sure that she was heard, she hit the table with her hammer three times like a judge with a gavel, calling order in a courtroom.
They fell silent, all eyes turned toward her. She didn’t argue. She didn’t shout. Instead, she looked Sheldon dead in the eye and said, “I’ll take a quarter kilo of not just one type but a mixture of hybrid seeds. My budget is three million. You need to present a catalogue or list that I can choose from what I wish to buy.”
Sunshine had a plan, the moment she got the seeds, she was going to take them to Dr. Sing and his team. And with the help of the system, it was going to be a matter of days before they could produce the seeds in plenty, those of even better quality than the ones Sheldon had.
The words hung in the air, deliberate and heavy. No one expected her to go for it without bargaining even a little bit.
Sheldon’s mouth fell slightly open. He had expected her to plead with him to come to some sort of understanding, to bargain desperately_ but her tone was calm, businesslike. Her gaze didn’t waver, leaving him at a loss and thinking to himself that he was being cheated somehow.
Jon’s eyebrows shot up, he could tell that this was some kind of trap. Sunshine was as crafty as her husband. But, what was she up to?
Hades smirked, and Hadrian folded his arms, intrigued. They all knew that Sunshine had a plan brewing.
Sunshine leaned forward slightly. “I take your silence to mean that we have a deal.” She said. “Get me the list, I do not have much time to waste.” She stood up and gestured that the meeting was over.
Everyone kept waiting for her to turn around and say something….anything…but nothing happened. She really left the room.
For a moment, Sheldon said nothing. His face twitched with a mix of frustration and reluctant admiration. Finally he took a paper and scribbled down the seeds he had.
It was passed to Hades and he made the selections. In the end, he chose everything.
Sheldon scoffed. “Fine, Hades have my money ready. We will be back in thirty minutes or so with your delivery.”
He stood, adjusted his coat, and looked at his friends_none of them met his eyes. “Are you guys coming?”
Jon looked away.
Kris scoffed. “No ,it seems like you are good on your own Sheldon. We would not want to see the secret hiding place for your special seeds that you did not tell us about.”
Defeated, Sheldon exhaled through his nose and walked out, the door slamming behind him.
“Traitor.” Jin said.
“He knew how much we wanted to invest in that project and lied to our faces!” Cory said.
“He was never going to let us on this one.” Kris exhaled loudly.
Hades leaned back in the chair and said with a crooked grin. “How about I let you in on something much better. Fortress four would like you to invest your idle money in us. Your special talents are in demand. If this works out, we can all rebuild our businesses and come from the apocalypse richer than we were before it started.”
Jon’s back stiffened. “I am curious, Hades what is this about?”
“Anyone feel like shooting something? We can talk as we polish our skills.” Hades stood.
Kris winced. “I am willing to give all my money to your wife as long as she will make me even more wealthy.”
“That is the plan, friend.” Hadrian said to him.
The billionaires exchanged intrigued gazes, then rose and followed Hades.

The drive home was quiet beneath the pale washed out sun. Day was silent, he had a lot to tell his boss but today was not the day. He had heard that there was a lot of screaming during the meeting. Clearly, she was not in a great mood.
Sunshine was thinking about the hybrid seeds, she hoped that they were worth the price. If they were not viable, she would be making a loss.
Just then, a faint ping echoed softly in her mind.
[World opening in three days, host are you interested?]
Her eyes fluttered open. “Yes system.” She answered quietly. The desire to return to Boulder Creek was about to consume her lately, there was still a lot to discover.
“You can leave, Day. I will call you if I need you.” She said as she stepped out of the car.
Immediately, she called Elio and told him to take half of the hybrid seeds to Dr. Sing once they were delivered. The she contacted Dr. Sing and told him what to do.
Home was quiet, save for the juice making machine that Cathy was operating. They talked briefly and then Sunshine went to the workshop.
Tank was crouched near the table, picking up something. Parts of a broken artificial sun lay displayed on the table. She sighed as she grabbed her tool belt to join the robot.
“Something on your mind?” Tank lifted his strangely human like eyes. “AI gadget counselors are free to use for repairmen.”
She sighed like the weight of the world was on her shoulders. “Nothing really Tank, I just need some sleep.”
“In that case,” Tank said absentmindedly, “you should know that young foreman Ariel returned to the house three hours ago, packed up all of the alcohol in the house and ordered Dwayne to take it to his private depot. Also, one of the bubbles in the shield has a lesion. You might want to fix that soon.”
