Chapter 296: The watcher’s breach attempt.
The alarms screamed early the next morning.
A sharp, metallic blare echoed through every corridor of fortress four, jolting people out of their dreams. It was so loud that even those that lived in the nearby bases heard it.
Many of the residents were jolted awake. Through the speakers, a stern voice shouted, “All residents, remain indoors! Do not step outside your homes until further notice!”
Sunshine woke with a start. Her head throbbed as a result of drinking a little more than she should have done that night before. For a moment, she wondered how she ended up in the bed. She looked to her right and saw Hades sleeping like a log. They were tangled under the blankets, naked!!
Panic shot through her like electricity. She bolted upright and got out of bed before grabbing for her clothes that were scattered across the floor. Under ordinary circumstances, she would be screaming and going through her memories to figure out how she ended up naked beside her husband.
But things were different. The alarms could not be ignored. “Hades.” She yelled out, lifted a pillow from the bed and threw it at her husband.
It landed on his face, directly.
Hades stirred, groaning like an old man with aching bones. The persistent alarm caused him to wince. “What is happening outside?” His eyes darted around. He lifted the covers and gasped. “I am naked…” he said, voice dripping with uncertainty. His eyes met Sunshine’s, hopeful that she had an explanation. The last thing he could remember was the two of them coming home and drinking some of Philip Harg’s homemade wine.
“We didn’t….” he started…”Did we?”
“Not now Hades, we can figure that out later. I do not know what is happening outside and I need to get there ASAP.” Sunshine avoided his gaze; she yanked her coat over her shoulders. Her cheeks were flushed with embarrassment. I swear that I am never touching alcohol again, she swore.
And she promised herself to kill Lisha that provided the sketchy wine.
Hades rubbed his temples. “We will talk about what happened later….”
“Nothing happened.” She shouted, “Get up, we have to go and check on the kids before fixing whatever is happening outside.”
She grabbed her walkie-talkie and started demanding for answers. Not a single response came from the other end.
“Done.” Hades declared, running out past her.
They were not surprised to find the children awake, peeking from the small gap Ariel had created after opening the door.
Ariel opened the door widely, a frown darkening his small face. “Mom, Dad_ What is happening?”
Sunshine leaned down, brushing her son’s hair back gently. “Nothing the adults cannot handle. Stay inside with your brothers and Tank 1, okay? It is just normal apocalypse stuff, nothing to be afraid of.”
“But I am afraid.” Castiel said to her, trying to climb up her right leg.
White was also trying to climb up the left one. She gently pushed them both away, sending them towards Ariel and Tank. “Take care of each other,” she said softly.
Ariel nodded, trying to be brave. “Be safe out there.”
She did not have the heart to look at Castiel who was already crying or Earl whose bottom lip was trembling. Hades grabbed her hand, and they rushed out of the house. Not a single word was said between them.
Outside, the air was sharp with tension. Soldiers crouched along the walls; rifles raised towards the sky.
“There is trouble in the field where the moon is.” Day explained. He had showed up early to wait for them outside the building.
His explanation did not fill in all of the gaps, leaving them to find the problem for themselves when they arrived.
The trouble was not with the moon or the field; it was with the bubble. The watchers were swooping through the sky, hurling big needle-like pins at the barrier using their beaks. Each hit landed with a sharp ping! before vanishing into the bubble or bouncing off.
“Make sure the shield is steady!” Carson shouted. “Do not stop applying that gel.”
Teams had already scrambled across the perimeter, reapplying glue to every surface. They had actually just done this an hour ago but the attack from the watchers had them repeating the task just to be safe.
About ten soldiers were blowing fresh bubbles, huffing and breathing like marathon runners. There was no joy or playfulness in the activity as usual.
A young soldier’s hands trembled as he secured the dragonoid. “If they breach, what do we do?” He shouted to Carson.
“We will be having barbecued watchers for dinner.” He answered.
“They won’t breach,” Sunshine said reassuringly, stepping forward.
Jon wrapped the fur coat tighter around his body. “How do you know?”
The other billionaires were right behind him_ looking like scared little puppies.
Sunshine was surprised to see them in her base so early in the morning. But that did not matter, the watchers called for her attention more. “The shield remained strong after the meteorite shower and acid rain, those pins will not take it down. The bubbles are not fragile like balloons.” She gave him the answer the system had given to her.
Sunshine’s eyes lingered on the watchers; they were trying all sorts of tricks to tear down their defenses. Their curiosity about the artificial moon had to be like an itch between the buttocks. And in their case, their claws were wrapped in gauze, and they could not get to it.
It was driving them insane, especially Pink. The watcher acted like all of her weapons and technology also belonged to it.
“Let them play, they will give up when they get tired. Lower your weapons and turn off the alarms.”
The soldiers turned, relief flickering in their eyes on hearing her words.
“Turn off the alarm!” Major Elio shouted into a walkie-talkie.
“Thank you, Elio.” Sunshine said as she sat on one of the benches. She felt drained.
“You should go back home and get some more sleep.” Hades suggested. “I will handle things here.”
Shaking her head, Sunshine replied, “I will only do that after my business with Jon and his friends is completed.”
Eyebrows raised. The men who were close enough to hear her pulled their necks forward and looked at her curiously.
“Us?” Sheldon asked, eyes narrowing. “Does this mean that you are actually considering selling an artificial moon to us?”
“Something far more serious.” She replied, “Let us convene, in the third wall board room in two hours, I have to give my children breakfast and take them to school.”
She stood up with Hades’ help began to walk away, leaving him talking to the billionaires.
Nimo caught up to her quickly, jumping in front of her. “Suni.” She said the named with a smile that shared her mood to gossip. “So, you and your hubby were awfully close yesterday, you were all over him at the moon party last night. Your relationship has progressed faster than I expected….hmmmm.”
“Me!?” Sunshine was surprised by her behavior. She found it unbelievable. She was not ready for Lisha to join in as well.
“If it isn’t Miss handsy, caught on camera patting her husband’s butt not once but five times.” Lisha grinned. “Oh, and she licked ice cream off his finger!!! Shame on you two for not respecting us single people.”
Sunshine gasped. “That was not me.”
“I have the footage to prove it.” Lisha shouted. “Even the watchers looked surprised. Suni and Hades, sitting in a tree…”
“K-i-s-s….” Nimo sung along, giggling foolishly.
The combination of Lisha and Nimo teasing her only increased the shame, but she cloaked it behind bravery and shamelessness. “I do not see anything wrong here, after all we are married. At least I have someone to kiss unlike you two. How does it feel to be sleeping alone in this harsh winter?”
They stopped singing and gasped.
She smiled at the shock on their faces, then smoothly she walked away.
Two hours later, Sunshine strolled into the meeting room, her stern gaze on the billionaires. “Gentlemen, why didn’t you tell us about the secret hybrid seeds when you were seeking an alliance?”
