Chapter 295: Sheldon’s impure motives.
The chess game had just started to get serious when a blinding light burst through the windows of Jon’s man cave. It was so bright that, for a heartbeat, everyone thought that the sun had defied nature and risen during the winter night.

Kris, who was lounging near the partially open window with a cigarette between his fingers, froze mid-drag. “What the hell_” he muttered, smoke curling around his face. He pushed the window wide open and poked his head outside.

The others jumped to their feet and hurried to the window. Sheldon, his arm still wrapped in a gold-colored cast, rubbed it absentmindedly as he stared at the sky. “Is that a moon?” He asked, mostly himself. “It is too low….. I mean did it fall from the sky or something. Crap, just when I thought this fucking apocalypse would not get any worse. What the hell are we supposed to do about a falling moon?”

Jin shook his head. “I see two moons, one full and one half. The half-moon is normal but the full one which is blinding my eyes is abnormal.”

They all noticed that he spoke the truth. There were two moons in the sky!!

“Oh, we are all going to die.” Chris groaned.

Jon squinted, picking up on more abnormalities his friends had missed. The light wasn’t flickering like fire or lightening. It was steady and just shining bright. The moon itself was moving from side to side as if it was undecided on where it wanted to be. His jaw tightened. He had never seen the ordinary moon moving like that. “Location….pay attention to the location. The bright moon just happened to rise above fortress four of all places. That cannot be a coincidence.”

Jin returned to the table and picked up his glass which held some brandy. “We must find out what is happening there.”

“What if it is nothing good?” Sheldon asked.

Jon touched his jacket, feeling the car keys in the pocket. “Still, I want to find out what is happening there. If it is another apocalypse related disaster, we transport our families and hide in their base.”

Some looked outside, wondering if it was a good idea to drive out of their bases in the dark.

“What are you waiting for?” Jon asked them.

Grumbling, the rest followed him. Within minutes, the billionaires were in a snow towing truck, roaring through the snowy paths that led to fortress four. The vehicle’s lights cut through the fog as their tires crunched over ice.

The closer they got, the more they saw that the moon was actually inside the bubble above Fortress Four and not hovering in the sky above as it had seemed.

“So, the moon fell and somehow found its way inside the bubble?” Sheldon said, confused.

Jon winced. “More like they have something that is shaped like a moon but gives off a brighter light. At this point, the things coming out of the base no longer surprise me. They have been coming up with strange innovations since the apocalypse began.”

Kris laughed in disbelief. “I swear, if Hades has made a moon, I am moving to fortress four. It does not matter if I have to kiss his ass a thousand times.”

“Hades?” Sheldon said, “That idiot is only good with numbers and stealing business deals, his wife however is the real brains behind all the innovations that are coming from there. Haven’t you ever noticed that she is always walking around with blueprints or that tool belt which follows her everywhere?”

“And she always smells like iron and fire.” Kris wrinkled his nose.

“What does fire smell like?” Sheldon asked.

Jon cleared his throat. “Whatever the case is, we have to be on good terms with them because they have the ability to help us live out the apocalypse in peace. But a moon…..” He shook his head. “I will be damned; this is some sci-fi kind of shit.”

Cory said nothing. His chest burned from a mix of irritation and admiration. “Imagine how rich Hades would be by now if he married her before the apocalypse.”

“But he did.” Jon frowned.

“I mean…like years before.” Cory explained. “He would be richer than all of us combined. If I were them, I would sell such stuff and build wealth in this apocalypse and be the world wealthiest man by the time it ends. People respect you more when you have money to create your own country.”

“Remember when Finch was stammering as he poured me whiskey at that cultural gala?” Jin asked.

The men laughed.

When they arrived, the Fortress four gates were opened for them at Elio’s instructions. There were no usual questions asked about why they had come; it was clear as to why they had come. Every corner of the base was glowing under the moon that floated gracefully above. Its light reflected on every stone surface, brighter than the inside of a jewelry shop.

Jon stepped out of the vehicle and stared upward. “My suspicions were right, that thing is man made.” he breathed.

Inside the second wall, people were laughing, drinking, singing. Lisha had the tablet and kept changing the color of the moon according to the requests of the children.

Hades spotted them first. He was already a few beers in; his cheek flushed with warmth and pride. “Jon!” he bellowed, gently stumbling over with open arms. “I knew you guys would come running over. Come, drink! My wife_ my genius of a wife_ she built an artificial moon.”

“I see,” Jon answered, trying not to smile.

Hades handed him a bottle, then turned to the others. “She’s the smartest woman alive. That is not just light up there_ that is days of her working hard….I feel terrible that I cannot be of help to her at times. But my girl, she always tells me…It’s okay baby, I can handle it….” He laughed loudly. “I hit the jackpot with my beautiful Sunshine.”

Sheldon chuckled, eyes flickering towards the artificial Moon. “Yes, yes…Quinn…we get it. You are riding on your genius wife’s coat tails. Now quote your price, I want to buy one for myself…. actually, make that ten.”

Hadrian, who had been standing nearby with his usual cool confidence, stepped in smoothly. “Business can wait, gentlemen. Tonight’s for celebration. Let’s not talk about trade or money.”

Sheldon laughed, but the jealousy lingered in his eyes. He watched Sunshine from a far_ She was with her children, laughing and dancing. The moon outlined her beautiful face, something in him twitched.

Jon noticed and frowned. He did not like that look, he knew how Sheldon was with other people’s wives even his so-called friends, the man had no limits. He did not trust the man with his wife, it seemed that he now had a new target_ Sunshine Quinn. “You better keep your paws off her, Sheldon.”

In response, Sheldon laughed mischievously while hiding a smile behind the bottle. His reaction only worried Jon the more. One wrong move from the idiot and they would all be kicked out of fortress four.

As the night deepened, karaoke became the new entertainment. People toasted to survival, to light, to Sunshine. Even Jon relaxed eventually, sitting by the fire with Hades, old grudges dissolving in beer and nostalgia.

“You should keep a close eye on Sheldon.” Jon cautioned quietly.

Hades arched his brows, “Is there something that I should be wary of?”

Before he could answer, the children interrupted taking him away to dance with them.

By the time the fires died and the music faded, everyone had gone home. Including the billionaires who spent the night there.

Beyond the walls however, hidden in the cold sky, shadows lurked. The watchers looked on at the moon with interest wondering what it was and why it had made the humans happy. Pink’s claws gripped the bubble as hard as possible, but it remained immovable.

Out of anger. the bird looked at the sky and screeched in defiance into the night.
