Chapter 293: Billionaire benefits.
After the groaning, many burst into laughter. This was because Ariel Quinn groaned the loudest as if the billionaires irritated him the most.

“I know….I know.” Hades calmed the room, “they can be idiots but those are some of the world’s richest men. It takes resources to govern a city. The people that build the walls and do other work will need to be paid. I am rich…but I alone cannot fund this project. Besides, those men are smart when it comes to business.”

“Oooh…” Lisha groaned. “They are idiots Hades. Have you seen Jin’s four-year-old daughter’s latest pedicure? He had diamonds crushed and embedded into the nail polish she used!! Diamonds are now currency, but he had them used in nail polish for a four-year-old!!”

“So, they like to throw money around.” Hades said defensively, “doesn’t mean they are useless. Most of the wealthy in the city and some parts of the country are members of their little club. If anyone can convince them to join us, it is those men.”

“They have hybrid seeds.” Hadrian spilled.

Sunshine gasped. Jon had forgotten to mention this little fact when he was seeking an alliance.

“You do know that they are building a nightclub in Jon’s base, right?” Elio asked.

“They are planning to call it ‘Glow.” Father Nicodemus added.

“They purchased half of the scales from the mutated snake for this very reason.” Elio said and sighed.

Hades rubbed his temples. “I am aware of what they are up to. Still, that does not take away from the advantages they bring to this mission. They have a unique gift we can harness to achieve our goals.”

Sunshine leaned forward. “They like feeling important so we will give them some kind of ceremonial role. Their seeds will be useful in our experiments to regrow food.”

“What if one of them wants to be second in charge or something?” Ariel asked.

“Then we build them a country club and casino.” Hadrian suggested.

Hades nodded. “Do not look down on them, businessmen remain businessmen in all seasons. They will start businesses to rebuild their own companies. But if they insist on leadership, we make them ambassadors of something.”

“Ambassadors of Glow.” Lisha said.

Everyone chuckled.

Sunshine placed her hands on the table, “Okay, I think we have covered everything. We should start working on these plans immediately. Bubbles need to go over Busker as soon as possible.”

Major Elio stood up. “We will take care of that.”

Morris added, “My people will begin mapping out paths in the mountain for road construction. We will need superhumans to go with us of course.”

Carson nodded. “I will work with O’Toole and Philip to form the squads. Training will begin tonight.”

Lisha stood up as well. “I will work with the comms officers and send out drones to drop some cameras in towns and cities. If we spy on other bases, we will know their weaknesses.”

“I will handle the billionaires.” Hades volunteered.

Hadrian and Warren said at the same time, “Construction.”

“Supplies.” Ariel raised his hand.

“Food.” Rori mentioned.

Roles were assigned and everyone left until only Hades and Sunshine remained in the room. He offered her the half of the remaining tea in his vacuum cup.

She took a big sip and then exhaled.

“Tired?” he asked.

“Like a beaver after building a dam.” She replied.

He laughed, pulling up so they could walk out together. “I am willing to bet that you have never actually seen a beaver building a dam in real life. Or on television for that matter.”

She leaned into him, laughing as well. He already knew her well enough to understand that she would never watch anything close to a wildlife documentary. A beaver building a dam was definitely something in that territory.

“What do you think are the odds of me shooting Jon during my meeting with the billionaires?” He asked.

She winced. “If he cries or tries to hug you, I say one hundred. Tell him to pause his Glow project. It is too early in the apocalypse for people to be clubbing.”

Hades sighed.

*****

The Drift lands of the Javed desert were unlike any other region of the new ruined world. Unlike most of the country that was under attack, it had miraculously remained mostly attack free, a true a green zone. Even the cold was not as brutal in the region as it was elsewhere.

What was more valuable was what lay underneath it: silos. Massive government-built underground storage facilities stuffed to the brim with grains like rice, maize, barley, oats and varieties of seeds. They had been kept there for safety, to be released in times of disasters both naturals and manmade.

When the apocalypse came, the Burton’s struck first. The richest and oldest farming family in the whole of the south. As the meteors fell, they removed those in charge and replaced them with their own employees.

Additionally, they always maintained heavy security with over one hundred bodyguards, and this turned into their private army in the apocalypse. To this number, mercenaries and other desperate individuals were added.

Now, they maintained close to one thousand guards who patrolled their medium sized bases and shot first before asking questions. It was why many were hesitant to go close to the area.

Heath Burton the family patriarch, ruled his fenced empire with an iron hand and a mind sharpened by decades of greed. The silos, he declared were his and only opened to outsiders for the sake of trade. Anyone that contradicted him was shot and beheaded. Their heads were lined up in the desert, mounted on poles.

But even a man like him could not depict what the watchers could bring. That afternoon the mist appeared out of the blue, covering everything. Then the watchers came, they hovered for a while over the Burton territory, then cast something down_a limp human form that struck the snow like a comet.

By the time Heath arrive, the mist had retreated.

His men were standing around the gift they had delivered.

He frowned looking at the woman. Pinching on the right side of his long, curved mustache, he asked, “Did the watchers bring her out of the mist?”

Jude, the head of security shook his head. Yes Sir, the one with orange tips on its fur threw her from the sky. Then all the watchers left.”

“Hmm.” Heath let a curious sound as questions swirled in his mind about the motives of the birds that had proved impossible to kill. It was the first time they were acting out of character.

The woman lay motionless in the snow, naked, her skin cracked and orange. Smoke seemed to be rising faintly from her pores. Around her, the ground was dry as all the snow had melted.

“Is she alive?” He asked, his voice deep and steady.

“Yes,” replied Jude. “Her chest keeps rising and falling slowly, her breath is shallow but visible.”

Heath’s eyes narrowed. “Why did the watchers bring her here?”

No one dared to respond as they had no answer.

“It can’t be for a good reason.” Jude said.

“I say we shoot that thing now.” one of the men suggested. “It maybe something dangerous in the form of a vulnerable woman. Maybe a watcher that somehow became human.”

Gazes were exchanged, worry danced in their hearts.

“If we kill her in haste, we might incur the fury of those birds. We have enough problems with the things moving in the sand and the birds. She looks like she could be superhuman. Let’s wait and see what she has to say for herself.” Heath backed away observing the clear skies worriedly.
