Chapter 292: Ambitions.
Sunshine looked at the map. “Here.” She said, pointing at the Westbrook town. It was also the biggest town on the map. “We create a trade town here, a neutral ground far enough from Fortress four to keep strangers away but close enough for supply runs and easy monitoring.”
Hadrian nodded approvingly. “Smart. Keeps this parent base secure.”
“It is better than the original plan of putting the market at the foot of the mountain.” Hades mentioned.
Carson leaned back. “We will need the soldiers to be on board as well. We need to tighten security in all areas. I am sure that mutant and mutated beasts will not end their attacks.”
Sunshine’s face brightened. “That brings me to the next part. We are going to create specialized squads. We do have a lot of idle soldiers on base, with good incentives even those in retirement will return to work.
The specialized squads are going to undertake the duty of fighting mutants and mutated beasts. Oh… superhuman enemies too. They will consist of different units, those that can fight in the air, land, water, name it.”
“An ancient combat squad.” Morris’ eyes gleamed.
Sunshine nodded. “All rough ideas are welcome here. Morris can lead such a team for instance.”
Morris cracked his knuckles and grinned like a soldier given a purpose. He was looking forward to combat with his new gigantic frame.
Hadrian clapped slowly and softly, nodding continuously, he always knew there was more to Sunshine than just a wife and a mother. She was the force that was going to give the Quinn name power again.
There was a knock on the door and then it was buzzed open. Ariel Quinn walked in with a tablet, a walkie-talkie and notepad. As if he did not notice all the eyes on him, he moved to the empty chair between Elio and Carson and took a seat.
Sunshine blinked a few times, confusion obvious in her eyes. “Ariel!!” she called him in a stunned voice.
Ariel raised his head and looked around, “Forgive me for being late, I was delayed by some child related affairs.”
“You are a child!” Lisha squealed.
Ariel cleared his throat. “In this meeting, I am more than a child. My presence here is in official capacity. Where were we?”
Everyone looked at Sunshine, hoping for an explanation. She shrugged and shook her head as the invitation had not come from her.
“I invited him because he is the logistics chief of Fourtresss Four.” Hades shared, “An expansion means that we are going to spend a significant number of resources.”
Ariel nodded, “I have already compiled a list of things that are in short supply and unavailable for use. For reference, Aunt Lisha can send you all a link on your tablets.”
Every one that sat in during these meetings had a tablet and they were connected to the limited base wi-fi when necessary. Lisha was in charge of authorizing access, and she guarded it jealously like Ariel guarded the passwords to every lock for every supply room on the base.
Sunshine turned everyone’s attention to the screen which had a map of their surroundings. “We have Hunkerville town to the left. Busker town to the right and Karlmoor behind. Busker was ruined by the meteors, and it is an empty town now. The other two have small surviving populations. They will be the easiest to take over.”
Many nodded.
“It will save us from being boxed in.” Lisha said, “We must take over quickly before some other force moves in and occupies them. As for population, all the stragglers that have been coming to us for help can be taken there.”
Morris pointed at the map, “We need bigger roads that go from here to the towns directly. That means we have to venture into the forest and create a new path. My people and I know the best places.”
Sunshine nodded. “We can build walls around the towns. For power, we have solar panels and emergency generators. I have also been working on artificial moon which I will introduce you all to later.”
Murmurs in the room increased.
“I think.” She raised her voice, “I think Busker should be turned into a farming town. Since it is empty, it is the best place for an experimental ground.”
“Security there will have to be as tight or even tighter than that of the base.” Father Nicodemus shared his thoughts, “If we can successfully farm, word will spread and people will come from hundreds of miles away looking for food. We will have more Scorpions on our hands than we can count.”
Elio chuckled. “You are finally speaking like one of us Father.”
The priest rolled his eyes, “I am a man of God, not a fool. I have been blessed with sight and wisdom so I can tell reality from fantasy. Fantasy is me wishing that the entire world would come together and live out the apocalypse in peace. That the beasts will stop attacking and the weather will become normal again. Reality is the fact that those things are nothing but wishes and we must survive as God intended. Why else would he give us superpowers?”
“Who says he gave them to us?” Elio asked.
A roar rose in the room as an argument started between the believers, the non-believers and those who wished for everyone to come back to reality.
Sunshine slapped her palm on the table
Nimo blew into a whistle, and everyone winced. “Focus people.” She yelled. “We have talked about Westbrook town turning into a trading town. I suggest that we mark the routes into and out of the town carefully. Nobody should come in or get out without being searched.”
“I suggest we come up with IDs for residents of Fortress Four.” Ariel spoke up after clearing his throat unnecessarily. “A trading town will attract spies.”
“It will also become overcrowded very fast so we must come up with a plan to extend into the city as soon as possible.” Hades suggested.
“Woah.” Warren raised his hands. “Maybe we should step back a bit. A town is easy to conquer but a city, not so much. Bases have already been formed there; we will face a lot of resistance.”
“And we will be ready for that.” Sunshine said confidently. “We will host summits and invite the leaders of those bases and do some division and conquering starting with the leader of biggest base in the city. As long as we convince that person to surrender to us and offer them some kind of leadership position, others will fall in line.
There is a reason why we have presidents, governors, congressmen, mayors and other leaders. Nobody can rule alone.” She used a pointer to draw a circle around the entire region and extended it. “At the end of the day, I want this whole region.”
People were stunned. Yes, she had talked of expansion, and they supported it but the region she wanted was a big ask. Those were sixteen cities combined. She was basically asking for leadership of a small country!!
Wasn’t it too ambitious?
“The rich will not be easily charmed.” Hadrian commented. “If they are well stocked like we are and have their own superhuman forces…..”
Hades laughed, cutting him off. “We have the perfect weapon for that.”
Sunshine sighed. “Let me guess, the billionaires next door.”
Everyone groaned.
