Chapter 291: Wealth, power and security.
She resisted the urge to roll her eyes. “I have not said that he is special honey I am just giving an example. Another one I can use is West brook mountain. It is supposed to be a green zone but, somehow, we keep getting attacks from the mist, mutants and mutated animals.

That lake did not exist in my last life. There is the snake which followed us all the way here. Dominic Steward killed that snake and yet in this life, I…no….Scorpion is the one that killed it. If we did not have the bubble, I am afraid some of the residents would be dead by now.”

Her words silenced him for a brief moment as he considered the attacks they had suffered so far. “So, you think that West brook is now a red zone?”

Sunshine shut her eyes for just a fleeting second. “I cannot call it that entirely because the attacks are spaced but if the watchers keep sending creatures our way, it could become a red zone.” She sighed.

He shook his head and patted her shoulders. “I can hear some self-blame in your voice but Suni, I think you are wrong. You said it yourself; you were in Crosstown at around this time…or almost there. There was no communication with the outside world. There is no way you were aware of what was going on in the Westbrook base.

Meteors fell here and your bubble stopped them from hitting the ground. Mist travels with the wind, you cannot control it. For all you know, this was a red zone and some superhumans cleaned it up and protected it. As for the watchers, they are everywhere, playing their stupid games.”

She heard the logic in his words and the truth that rung in them. Indeed, she did not know how the Westbrook base took shape in her past life. None the less, it did not deter the need for an expansion.

Sunshine said, “You are right about the zoning issue, but superhumans will shape the future and the map of the world is going to be different after five years. People like Dominic, Salem and others are already mapping out territories.

If we do nothing, we will be swallowed by someone stronger. We cannot remain small; we have to expand.” She could not fall behind Cassius’s achievements when he had the system or else, she was no better than the fool.

He nodded slowly, the weight of her certainty sinking in. It was not like he had not thought about the future after the apocalypse ended. Everyone with brains could tell that the world would not be the same. “What do you suggest we do? Say it and it will be done.”

“We build an empire” she said simply. “Wealth, power and an unshakeable army. Those three things will decide how we live after the apocalypse ends.”

Father Nicodemus’s voice came through the window, “All roots of evil.”

Hades and Sunshine turned their heads, surprised to see the man hovering in the air with his wings spread out.

Hades scoffed softly. “Father, isn’t eavesdropping a sin or something?”

The priest laughed. “I was not eavesdropping; I was passing by to drop off this batch of almond cupcakes Sister Anna baked. It was for the children, but she saved some for you.” He placed it on the windowsill and flew away.

Sunshine opened the container which held six blue and pink cupcakes and took one. “Trade will make us rich. We have supplies in the space and the things I repair. We sell what no one else has. If we control trade, we control alliances of any nature plus information. Maybe this president thing could end up becoming real.”

Hades leaned against the table, thoughtful. “You have really thought this through.”

“I have had two lives to think.” She replied. “In my past, I helped Cassius achieve a lot without knowing that he was deceiving me. In this one, I want to use it all for myself. President Sunshine or Ice witch Sunshine Quinn….” She waved her hand out and tilted her chin upwards, “leader of humans, superhumans and mutated beasts.”

He chuckled under his breath. “Then let us get everyone together. We need as many hands-on board.”

Everyone that gathered in the boardroom of the command center that afternoon thought that the topic of discussion was going to be about the shardlings or the rumored fight club. Some even thought it would be about the extra marital affair on everyone’s tongue.

However, when Sunshine began to speak, they found out that it was a different matter entirely.

“We have been playing defense for far too long,” she began. “Waiting for the next disasters, waiting for the next threats, the next intruders. That stops now…well partially.”

Confusion enveloped those that were listening, they could not fathom what her words meant, was this not the purpose of a strong base? To protect it with all they had.

“Suni, we do not understand honestly.” Hadrian stated.

Sunshine folded her hands. “We all here in our little bubble. We think that we are safe….invincible but we are not. Bases will rise and fall in this apocalypse. Strong superhumans will conquer territories and assemble armies to conquer the best lands.

If we remain small and arrogant, we may fall I am afraid. We need to build a larger territory, stronger army and gain power that cannot be easily challenged. It is the only way to survive the apocalypse and what comes after it.” She continued to give them her reasons.

Heads were nodding.

“I like what I am hearing.” Hadrian leaned forward, intrigued.

Carson whistled low. “Ambitious.”

“I am ambitious,” Sunshine declared. “When the great cold ends, people will start moving again. The sun will be out and vengeful. Raiders, desperate super humans will team up to loot, kill and destroy. They will occupy towns and cities surrounding us, leaving us unable to leave the mountain.”

“What?” Lisha whispered. She did not want to live on the mountain, in the bubble forever. After the apocalypse, normal life had to resume.

Sunshine switched on the screen and zoomed in the map showing the nearby territories. She circled a part of it. “We start by taking over these towns. Both the small and the big. All of them will become part of Fortress Four.”

“They must have people living there already. Will they join us?” Warren said.

Hades nodded. “We have considered that, and we will have to persuade the people to accept us. We give them supplies and security, I doubt anyone would be mad enough to reject such an offer.”

“And if they refuse?” Warren asked.

Dwayne roared softly. “We use force….”

Father Nicodemus quickly chimed in. “Violence is never the answer my son.”

A disagreement rose between the two, Sunshine tapped the table. “We will cross the bridge when we get there. But honestly, they don’t have much of a choice. Between superhumans, the wealthy with ambitions and marauders who are basically bandits, it is either death or submission.”

“Just like Scorpion planned to do with us and every other base on the mountain. He planned to turn it all into his territory.” Carson spoke up. “Democracy is dead, survival is all that matters now.”

His words silenced them all, including the priest.
