Chapter 290: Need to expand.
It was not very surprising that Nusra did not welcome opinions about the condition she found herself in now. Sunshine could see it that the woman was struggling, even though she was trying hard to mask it beneath lies that she was thriving as always. “I think you will like what I have to say,” She told her.

Nusra’s eyes remained guarded but she nodded. “Go on.”

“Technology has been advanced for many years so there is a solution.” Sunshine continued carefully. “A prosthetic limb. My husband anticipated that such accidents could occur so he stocked up on a lot of artificial body parts that could replace those that had been lost.” She paused, then spoke up with her hands crossed. “Of course, it will not replace what you lost but it will surely help you look and feel like yourself again. This prosthetic leg has been upgraded to provide the highest level of comfort and it is designed to attach so naturally that nobody will ever know it doesn’t belong to you.”

Nusra hesitated but only for a moment before she smiled. “Yes,” she said simply. “Yes, I would like that. An artificial leg is far better than no leg but you are wrong, everyone that knows I lost a leg will still know it is an artificial limb.”

Sunshine exhaled in relief and laughed. “Well, that number is not large and nobody truly cares. Everyone is more interested in the apocalypse, the watchers and Philip’s silly jokes.”

Nusra laughed. Philip was one of the few soldiers that actually visited her and he cheered her up with jokes and a beer that he smuggled into the medic bay. She liked Philip, he was genuine.

Sunshine tapped Nusra’s hand in a comforting manner. “Since you have made up your mind, I will speak to the doctors today. They will come here and brief you more about the process.”

Nusra grabbed Sunshine’s hand and squeezed it. She did not use words to send her appreciation. But Sunshine saw it in her reddened eyes and relaxed body.

She gave Nusra a brief hug and left the room. Sunshine used the opportunity to check on other sick people, assuring them that they would be okay and that they were in safe hands.

Nurse Kendra pulled her aside before she could leave and whispered, “We have a pregnant patient, around five weeks.”

Sunshine blinked. For a moment, she said nothing and seconds counted down. Then, she shrugged. “Not my business. My advise was offered because it is not easy raising a child in an apocalypse. If someone ignored it, that is their cross to bear. Continue advocating for family planning meanwhile.”

Nurse Kendall nodded and walked back to the pharmacy.

Sunshine left the medic bay. Once outside, she exhaled loudly, there was nothing she had done so far but somehow, exhaustion was already nipping on her heels.

Her mind traveled to the winter in her last life. At around this time, she had been clearing the road of snow, leading everyone to Crosstown. Rowena had been ill, and she was the one carrying her on her back. “Definitely don’t miss that.” She mumbled and gazed over at the car.

Corporal Day stood beside it with White in his arms, muttering something to the bear.

Sunshine walked over and took White from him. “Was he bother?”

The corporal shook his head. “No ma’am, he is a very peaceful bear. I was just playing with him.”

She laughed, stepped into the car and took a whiff if the bear. He smelled like Castiel’s soap and lotion, which was odd. “Did someone give you a bath?”

White belched.

Sunshine narrowed her eyes at the bear. “That is disgusting young man…err…bear.”

White leaned into her chest in response. Because he smelled nice, she forgave him. The car stopped by the pet center where she dropped White off. The bear’s ears perked, waving excitedly, and trotted off play with the kittens. Sunshine watched him for a moment, smiling.

“Ma’am Rori or Miss Lisha will be here in an hour to pick him up.” One of the caretakers told her.

Sunshine did not doubt that at all. Everyone was spoiling the bear rotten. He was the new baby of the family.

They continued on their way, Sunshine told Day to take the longer route, she wanted to see the activities happening within the walls.

“Ma’am have you heard that the popular book club is actually a fight club?” He asked her as her turned around a corner.

Sunshine let out a tiny sigh. “Yes, Elio did mention it. I have no problem with how people spend their free time as long boundaries are respected and nobody is harmed maliciously.”

Day nodded. He considered it his duty to brief her of her of the trivial problems on the base, even the gossip that she did not need to know.

“There was a big fight in the second wall last night.” He began again. “Mr. Clement caught Barrett Walter banging his wife in the living room.” A tiny chuckle slipped through his lips, “He had come home with guests, they caught them ready handed….” He burst out laughing again. “Naked!…”

Sunshine folded her lips, trying hard not to laugh. “Yes, Day….I get it.”

Then, he told her about a quarrel between two market vendors. As he narrated, her mind drifted elsewhere. Past the voice that kept talking non stop, past the comfort of the base, something inside her kept stirring inside her. She loved what they had built here_the walls, the order, the life_ but she couldn’t help but feel like it was not enough. In the apocalypse, safety was a bubble that could burst at any time.

What if this fortress fell?

What if it burned from wild fires?

What if we were betrayed and it was taken from us?

What then?

Besides, after she had been reborn, Sunshine had an ambition to become the most powerful person in the apocalypse, but she had sort of become too comfortable, forgetting her personal mission.

The car pulled to a stop in the manufacturing section and she stepped out. Her hands tightened around her coat as she walked into one of the buildings where weapons she got from other worlds were broken down and reassembled.

As usual, it smelt of oil, metal and various powders. Hades was there, overseeing the delivery of the last broken swords. The smiths had gone through her manual on what to do and their fires were already burning.

She found him and slipped her hand around his waist. “You are sweating.” Her eyes lingered on his eyebrows before trailing down to his neck.

“It is hotter than hell in here but work is moving along splendidly.” He moved his head around, enjoying the cool breeze she was blowing over him.

“Is that better?” She asked, distracted.

Hades caught her look_ that faraway gaze she got when her mind was already three steps ahead of the present. “You are thinking about something, is it the shardlings?” He asked. “You dealt with the snake and the marauders.”

Sunshine shook her head. “That is not really a problem right now, unless someone here wants to take a swim into that water.”

“Okay, then what is it?” He asked

Sunshine took his arm and led him into his office, she faced him_exhaling slowly. “We need to expand.”

Hades blinked. “We are expanding. The builders are still…..”

She shook her head. “Not this base. Beyond Fortress four. We need sister bases, other safe zones. Trade centers. Somewhere to move to in case we lose this home.”

Hades frowned. “Lose this home? Is something going on that I am not aware of?”

“The apocalypse is going on and it is unpredictable,” Sunshine said quietly. “There are things that have changed in this apocalypse as a result of choice I made. For instance, Alfred.”

He raised his eyebrows.

She sighed. He did not enjoy talking about Alfred, but she had to make clear examples on the things that had changed. “He should have died but because of my warning, he lived.”

“Just like many other people on the base that would have died if you did not build and provide the bubble before the meteors fell.” He pointed out. “Alfred and his dancing eyebrows is not special.” He growled out, voice packed with jealousy.
