Chapter 492: Chapter 492: Shocking Commander Shen
“You can provide so much water?” Commander Shen asked in surprise, his tone high pitched and loud.
He had even forgotten to behave like a serious military leader.
Luckily, only a few people were on the road at that time and he didn’t scare them into fleeing.
But his mention of ‘so much water’ had indeed attracted some unwanted attention.
Water had become more valuable than gold and any mention of it sparked interest no matter who mentioned it.
People would rob and kill for a bottle of water now. So, any mention of water was bound to attract attention.
Commander Shen seemed to realize his mistake as soon as those words left his mouth and shut up immediately.
However, Chu Miao wasn’t afraid of being robbed or hurt just to provide water.
So, she answered his question without any qualms.
“Yes, I can do that. It is one of my abilities, so it’s not a big issue.” Chu Miao was so casual while saying such shocking words that Commander Shen nearly choked to death.
Did this girl really have no idea of how much water normal superpower users can produce in one go?
The base had to practically pay all the water superpower users within it to create water every day to barely have enough to supply to everyone a liter of water.
But here she was claiming so calmly that she could produce water that could supply the whole base for several days.
That was an outrageous claim, but after interacting with Chu Miao the last couple of days, he knew that she never bragged.
If she said she could do it, then she most definitely can.
He was just shocked by such a heaven-defying ability. However, he was also happy because if Chu Miao could really provide such an amount of water in a day, adding to the medicine she provided, then their base might survive even the fiercest attacks from zombies.
As they walked along, they discussed ways that could improve the lives of humans among the fights with zombies and mutated animals.
The issue of diet being one of the reasons humans were dying in large numbers came up.
“The human body needs all kinds of nutrients, minerals, and vitamins to maintain optimum functions.
But since the apocalypse started, some things have become so scarce that there are people who haven’t seen meat for months.
Others haven’t seen a leaf of green vegetables even though they are the main source of vitamins.
Fruits are even rarer. Life has become something strange for many people.
The simple things that people never took seriously and foods that they looked down upon have now become something they could only wish for.” Commander Shen had a cloak of sadness around him as he spoke.
He had witnessed many deaths in the base and while some were because the people were sick and medicine was not available, others died of starvation while others were because they lacked some kind of nutrients in the body.
“Why hasn’t the base planted vegetables and fruits after the flood water dried up?” Chu Miao didn’t understand why the government and so many leaders in the base could not do something so simple.
Commander Shen looked at Chu Miao as if he was staring at an alien.
He wondered what kind of life this girl had been leading after the apocalypse that she was so clueless.
Chu Miao realized that she might have said something wrong when she saw how Commander Shen was looking at her.
“Grandpa Shen?” She called curiously.
Commander Shen had asked her to call him that the day before. Having such a young child call him Commander Shen this Commander Shen that made him feel awful.
“Have you tried planting anything since the floods ended?” Commander Shen asked instead.
Chu Miao didn’t understand what he meant but still answered honestly.
“I haven’t, but my mom has. We have a whole garden filled with vegetables and short-term fruits like strawberries and gooseberries.
There is also a small farm with other crops like potatoes, rice, and corn. Why do you ask that?” Chu Miao didn’t think Commander Shen was acting so surprised for nothing.
Something must be wrong somewhere.
“Have those things your mother planted germinated and grown?” Commander Shen was even more surprised this time.
“Yeah, people in the sect depend on them to feed the thousands living there. Is there a problem?” Chu Miao didn’t understand what was so surprising about growing vegetables that made the old Commander so shocked.
“How is that possible?” The Commander wondered out loud.
“Eeh…can you tell me what is happening? What is impossible?” Chu Miao asked as they arrived at the West side gate.
The soldiers at the gate opened it without questions when they recognized the Commander.
Commander Shen took a deep breath to steady himself before starting to explain.
“I am shocked because after that fog and the floods, something in the soil seems to have changed.
Crops do not grow and those that manage to germinate turn into man-eating plants.
We lost a few people who were tending to the plants before we gave up on normal cultivation of vegetables.
Now there is a lab set up in the base to research the cultivation of plants that are compatible with the current soil.
The soil has changed and can no longer grow regular crops.
That’s why I was surprised when you said your mom has grown vegetables.
How did she do it and they didn’t turn around and eat people?”
Only now did Chu Miao realize that the world had changed more than just people, rats, and fish.
She had indeed seen mutated plants, but she hadn’t expected the soil to be affected so much that even artificially grown crops would turn.
“The crops were grown in the most normal way. We plant seeds in a nursery, then transplant them once they are ready.
However, my mother uses her wood ability to supplement the crops and water superpowers users water them when necessary.
I was in charge of watering them at first, but in order to train the abilities of the other superpower users recruited into the sect, the job fell on them.
I just needed to provide water for daily usage.
So, I don’t know what is different. Maybe the wood essence of a superpower user is different.” Chu Miao was now just fumbling through the explanation because she didn’t know whether the difference was because she had added spiritual water in the watering tanks or whether her mother’s wood spiritual energy made a difference.
But she hoped that the wood superpower was useful.
