Chapter 462: Chapter 462: Revamping the South
The room went quite once more as everyone seemed to be lost in their own thoughts.
A few minutes later, a knock came at the door and after getting permission, the same soldier who had left came back again.
He walked over to Commander Shen and said something close to his ear before saluting and leaving once more.
After the soldier had left, Commander Shen cleared his throat to gain the attention of everyone in the room.
Once he had everyone’s attention on him, he reported what the soldier had found.
“We do have family-sized tents, but not many. According to the records, there are only three hundred, but from what I know, there are almost a thousand families in the South.” Commander Shen explained.
“I think that number needs to be updated. From the number of deaths that have occurred in the last few weeks since the floods ended, I doubt the number of families remains so high.” The second middle-aged woman said somewhat scornfully.
It was obvious that she looked down on the people living in the South and didn’t care much about their lives.
While some people didn’t care about her attitude, the president and some of the people in the room did.
“We are the closest thing to a cabinet right now and if we don’t even care about our own people, what is going to happen later?” The president asked angrily.
“Mr. President, it’s not that we don’t care about them but those people are of little value and…” one of the middle-aged men started but was shut down by Ye Xuan who simply raised his hand and the man was thrown backwards together with his chair and slammed against the wall.
The others were shocked and turned to look at Ye Xuan who still had a serious expression.
He didn’t look happy nor angry, but his actions told a different story.
“Why did you attack me?” The middle-aged man got up from the floor where he had fallen after hitting the wall and questioned Ye Xuan.
“Your life is not worth more than that of the people in the South. You are all citizens of our country and if you think otherwise, then you don’t deserve to be a leader.” Ye Xuan didn’t mince his words.
He said something that President Yu had wanted to say for a long time but couldn’t because he needed these people in his leadership.
Nevertheless, Ye Xuan didn’t care about anyone other than his girlfriend, her family, and the people in their sect.
Outside of that, everyone else was the same. That included the people in the room with him.
“You have no right to raise your hand against me or anyone else in this room.” One of the old men complained.
“And who is going to stop me?” Ye Xuan asked almost provocatively.
Something so unlike him.
Everyone fell silent and the president had to change the topic. He realized that Ye Xuan was somewhat different from the last time they had met, which was during his reporting of a mission he had carried outside the country after his retirement from the army.
“If the families have reduced in number, then let’s give the family-sized tents to those with more members, especially families with children or the elderly.” The middle-aged woman who had gone to see the president earlier suggested.
“That’s a good suggestion. Since young children and the elderly cannot be left alone, the family-sized tents should be given to the families with this population.
Others can be given the normal tents to share between two or three people to sleep depending on their size.
I am sure that the people below can work something out.
What about waste management and restrooms?” The president asked again.
“There are temporary toilets available in storage. They could be distributed to the people and some of them hired to take care of waste management.
This is one way of providing them with an opportunity to earn their upkeep within the base.” The suggestion was given by a middle-aged man who had been quiet all along.
He was, of course, one of the few who supported the president.
“Alright, it’s decided then. Ye Xuan, when can we get the medicine to give to the people?” The president asked as he turned to look at Ye Xuan who had the most imposing aura in the room.
“We can start today. Make the arrangements. My team will handle the distribution, just send some soldiers to assist them.” Ye Xuan didn’t want the leave the medicine to these corrupt people.
They had seen how it worked on the president and he was sure if he just gave it to them and left everything for them to arrange, most of the medicine would disappear into their private coffers.
He wasn’t about to hand over Chu Miao’s resources to these people.
“I can provide some knowledgeable people to help, just tell me how many.” One person said.
“I also have available people you can use. Let me know how many you need.” Another one said.
It was as if these people had suddenly been energized. It was obvious that they had ulterior motives. Anyone who couldn’t see that would be blind.
Hence, Ye Xuan ignored them and looked at Commander Shen.
Commander Shen understood what he meant and said, “I will send twenty soldiers to help your team. You can have Little Wane’r show you guys the way. The others will follow behind soon.”
After getting assurance from the Commander, Ye Xuan stood up, saluted the president and Commander Shen then left the conference room in large strides.
The president didn’t want to stay behind and listen to these selfish people complain about how arrogant Ye Xuan was.
He was aware that if it weren’t for Ye Xuan, there was no way Chu Miao would have healed him, and even helped him awaken a superpower.
Thus, he also stood up and left.
Commander Shen also left because he had to go and arrange for honest and righteous soldiers to help Ye Xuan distribute the medicine.
