Chapter 449: Chapter 449: The North Gate
Moreover, many areas where people live nowadays avoid planting any flowers or other types of plants for fear of mutation.

If a flower was planted for its aesthetic beauty but ended up turning into a man-eating flower, that would be a huge loss.

Thus, the sides of the road were left bare.

The houses were large villas and bungalows and the area was quiet.

Apart from some soft music that could be heard by those passing by, this place was as normal as a gated estate before the apocalypse.

One could even see a few children playing in some yards and young ladies drinking tea in gazebos.

Looking at this scene and remembering what Jun Huang had just said about the south of the base, one would feel sick to the stomach.

These people were leading such luxurious lives on the rations of the poor people in the south. How despicable.

The leaders mostly lived at the end of the community and the group had to walk for half an hour before reaching there from the gate.

They came to stop in front of a heavily guarded gate. There were soldiers standing outside the gate with guns and Chu Miao could tell that more were patrolling inside the fence.

Jun Huang took out his pass and a letter from his pocket and gave it to one of the soldiers outside the gate.

After the soldier examined the pass and read the letter, he immediately returned them to Jun Huang and said something to his companion before opening the gate and leading the way.

It was obvious that even though Jun Huang had the authority to enter this place, he still needed an escort to get to where they were going.

They came to a reception room, which doubled as a living room and we’re invited to sit before the soldier walked to another room.

He came out a moment later followed by a girl around the same age as Chu Miao.

“This is the president’s daughter, Yu Wane’r. She will take over from here.” The soldier introduced before leaving again and heading outside.

The girl introduced as You Wane’r was the only daughter of President Yu who had awakened a strength-type superpower and who was also the reason why the president was still in power.

She was one of the few people who had advanced their superpower to level four.

Something that made the other leaders fear laying their hands on the president.

“Hello everyone. I understand that you are here to see my father. Jun Huang, did you get the medicine?” She was a very straightforward young lady and went straight to the point.

“No.” Jun Huang replied curtly.

This surprised You Wane’r who had placed all the hopes of saving her father on that medicine.

Her father had been through a lot and the doctors had gone above and beyond to keep him alive.

In fact, they had already given an ultimatum. If the medicine couldn’t be administered in the next two days, the president would be a goner.

“What! What happened?” Yu Wane’r stood up in shock and asked with a loud screech that had a tremble to it.

It was obvious that the news had devastated her but she was trying hard to keep her composure.

Before Jun Huang could reply, a few people appeared in the living room.

There were several middle-aged men and a couple women. There were also a few old men with walking sticks.

Jun Huang stopped what he was about to say and stood up to salute the newcomers.

The other soldiers who were in Ye Xuan’s squad also stood up to salute.

Only Chu Miao stood beside Ye Xuan quietly without doing anything or saying a word.

“Major General Ye, what a surprise. What brings you to City C?” One of the middle-aged men asked warily when he spotted Ye Xuan.

“Family.” Ye Xuan replied curtly.

Those who knew him knew that he didn’t want to talk to the middle-aged man.

One of the old guys walked over to Ye Xuan and patted his shoulder.

“It’s good to see you again.” He said with undisguised emotion.

It was obvious that he was not pretending but was indeed happy to see Ye Xuan.

“Good to see you too, Commander.” Ye Xuan replied respectfully.

The difference between how he treated the middle-aged man and the old man was obvious.

Chu Miao could already read her boyfriend like an open book. She realized that among this group of people there were those Ye Xuan was close to, or was willing to be close to and others who must be kept at a distance.

Because of the urgency of the president’s matter, there was no time to chit-chat first.

Another middle-aged man turned to Jun Huang and asked, “You said you didn’t bring the medicine back? What happened?”

Jun Huang didn’t waste time talking about how their team had almost been wiped out.

He only explained how the institute they were supposed to pick up the medicine at had been completely destroyed by the floods and nothing was left when they got there.

“Now what is going to happen to the president? He can’t hold on any longer.” Another middle-aged man asked.

“We should start making preparations for the funeral. Even though times are different, he should still be given a state funeral.” One of the old men with a walking stick said.

“No.”

“No.”

“No.”

The three nos came from three different people.

One came from You Wane’r, another from the Commander who had spoken to Ye Xuan, and the other came as a surprise to everyone as it was from Jun Huang who had just said that he didn’t bring back the medicine.

This surprised everyone and they all turned to look at him without understanding why he opposed preparing for the president’s funeral.

“Officer Jun, you failed your mission and didn’t bring back the medicine to save the president.

Even though this was no fault of yours, you still failed and don’t have the authority to speak here.”

The middle-aged man who had been snubbed by Ye Xuan spoke harshly.
