Chapter 448: Chapter 448: The Vast Difference in Living Standards
There are four sections in the east, west, north, and south.

The central part is where we got the passes. The buildings you saw there hold different offices of the leaders and also storage.

Most of the supplies brought in and also distributed are stored there.

There are other facilities, however, such as a supermarket in the north and west areas.

The north has the most luxurious houses which include villas where the rich live.

Those people don’t seem to have been affected by the apocalypse at all.

They eat luxury foods and it is not uncommon to find lobsters and abalone on their table.

Honestly, I don’t know where they get such food. They have expensive wine and clothes.

They even have enough to pay maids and other house help services. They indulge in pleasure and other activities, yet they have never killed a single zombie.

Then there is the west part of the base, which houses middle-class citizens.

Even though they are not extravagant, they live a comfortable life. Those are mostly the people who work for the rich and the base.

The administration staff and others who run other facilities such as the supermarket and receiving and recording supplies.

They would, of course, take something small for themselves.

Those working for the rich get what they call the leftovers but in reality, when it comes to food, they cook excess and when the rich can’t finish it, which is obvious, they take it home.

These are people who eat like the wealthy and also have no food and drinks expenses.

They can afford to live in single two or three bedroom houses because almost all their income goes to paying rent and buying a few necessities.

After all, even things like soap and shampoo come from their employer’s houses.

The people in the west live like the lower class from before the apocalypse. They have enough to eat but can’t be extravagant.

Even their meals aren’t anything to envy and many survive on regular noodles and dried vegetables and beef jerky.

There are apartments built in that area with small rooms and shared bathrooms.

You could even find a family of six living in a single room. They rely mostly on hunting zombies to earn contribution points by presenting crystal cores then exchange the points for supplies or go to the supermarket in the west to buy what they could term as luxury when they have a good harvest and kill more zombies.

The so-called luxury goods are canned beef and probably dried sausages.

Most of the soldiers live in the west area, but are provided with regular meals by the base and don’t need to pay rent.

But each room houses four soldiers. Those with families must rent other rooms for their family members.” Jun Huang explained the situation in the military base as he lad the group to their destination in the northern part.

“What about the south?” Lei Ying was becoming impatient and asked.

He was already pitying those living in the west and didn’t even want to imagine what those living in the south were like.

Jun Huang took a deep breath and a sad look surfaced on his face.

“Those don’t even live like humans. It is worse than a slum.

There aren’t houses but an empty plot of land that those who couldn’t afford to pay for rent in the west and can’t even afford to buy food live.

There are shacks made of plastic wrappers or cartons there. There aren’t toilets so people use flying toilets that include helping themselves to plastic paper bags or bottles and simply throw them while standing outside their shacks.

It doesn’t matter if they land on someone else’s place. They don’t have water to bathe or wash clothes and they are literally dressed in rags.

Some of those who are able to go out and hunt for zombies and exchange for a few supplies only get enough to eat and can’t even fill their stomach.

Moreover, if there are leftovers, they are robbed.

Some even don’t get home with the supplies they had worked hard for and are robbed on the way.

So, many prefer to exchange for ready made food, mostly noodles so that they could borrow hot water in the supply distribution point and eat them there before going home.

The president had been against the situation in the south and had fought with the other leaders to establish a supply point where those unable to go out to scavenge for supplies or hunt zombies can have some food and clean water.

But with the amount of corruption here and with the president getting sick and unable to go out, things had gotten worse.

The supplies supposed to go to the people in the south had entered other people’s pockets, especially the leaders and the rich.

These people only came here after the floods, but they were already living in hell.

When the cholera broke out, a large number of them died and the leaders had the audacity to quarantine them.

Now, I don’t know how they are doing.

I know that if nothing is done, that place will turn into a zombie breeding zone.”

Listening to Jun Huang, the group of soldiers who had placed their lives on the line countless times to protect these people felt a lump in their throats.

How can the citizens of this great country be treated like they were lesser humans?

Something had to be done, but first, they had to wake up the president first.

They soon arrived at a large gate. On top of the gate were large words written in elegant don’t, ‘North Gate’.

This was obviously the northern part of the base where the leaders and the rich lived.

Jun Huang showed his pass and the side gate was opened so that the group could enter.

The inside of the gate was different from the outside.

It was completely clean like a regular gated community. The only thing lacking were vibrant flowers which had obviously been uprooted by the floods.
