Chapter 1710: Drug War (Part 2)
Speaking of drugs, from what Rowan and the others had gathered so far, the people here had actually protected their factories well. They weren’t created in typical factories like those Alterra had in its industrial zones.
Rather, there used to be a warehouse, but when the operation expanded, they created a new, better-protected, and well-guarded area.
According to Alterra’s (and Gian’s) detailed investigation, they created an underground area not far away from the warehouse, taking advantage of the sentries there.
It seemed like Felipe, the Lord’s right-hand man, had very good foresight. He had already started building this as early as when the operations were still starting.
They used slaves to dig out a large area and then added system walls as the walls lining the underground construction.
The ceiling was manual and took a while, but there were Terran slaves who knew about construction, and Felipe hired them all.
They found out about this because one of the slaves that Gian bought had worked on the construction of this.
He was injured at some point and was rendered useless, so he was sold off. He was ordered never to speak about the underground area, but Gian only had to ask how he was injured, and he could surmise it without him having to say anything that’d break the command.
The access to these underground factories was also hidden. They created a complex pathway underground for it, with entrances in conspicuous buildings that, on the surface, couldn’t have any connection with anything suspicious.
So even if Voumi investigated, a full week of investigation might not be enough to find it.
Anyway, they decided to just watch for now and see how things would go.
One of Alterrans’ main tasks here was not to watch with popcorn, but to ensure the drug factories were destroyed. And the best way to do this was to use the war and the enemy forces.
So they ought to lead the way, and maybe cause a bit more chaos in the process.
…
Gingo lifted his hand, and his elements solidified around him, injuring several enemies, even those with higher levels than him.
Hesso was very impressed, and he felt a bit proud that he managed to get this one in his team.
He knew that this guy was the one who cuckolded his uncle. HAHA! He really wondered if that bastard in Sandra’s stomach was his? When his uncle allowed him to go to this war, Hesso knew there were doubts about the child’s legitimacy.
He should get his official heir status when he returned! And, when he got his drugs, then it would practically be guaranteed!
Slash! Bang!
Hesso watched as Gingo, while stabbed at the side himself, managed to grab an enemy’s head and—squelch—concentrated fire expanded from the palm, causing the head of the person who was the same level as Gingo to explode.
Whew. It was a good thing this guy became a slave. Hesso also thought it was satisfying to have one of the scandal’s central figures under his feet.
That said, his uncle probably didn’t want this guy to survive this war, so Hesso would make sure to use him fully before getting rid of him!
The war was still more difficult than they thought.
Smarter ones like Gingo prepared and filled their spaces well, while others didn’t think this place would be so troublesome, considering they brought hundreds of trained elementalists with them.
This was stupid, but also a bit understandable. Aborigines didn’t know the drugs were created by Terrans at all, and didn’t know what kind of preparation Felipe had been planning.
That said, it was also stupid of them to assume only they could gather so many elementalists.
War exploded all around them. There was a fight everywhere, and it was more challenging because there was a huge number of local citizens willing to fight, even normal and weaker citizens, even if many of them were rabid, as if hungry for flesh.
Many were not too skilled, and many were more mindless slaves than anything, but they were very troublesome.
It was here that Hesso realized that this place had bought off a lot of slaves and hired a lot of mercenaries with the drug money! Even if it was a surprise attack, it seemed like the default forces were not weak.
Well, no matter, it’d be theirs soon!
Although Flaret was richer now, its foundation was young and it hadn’t been well-off for so long. In contrast, even if it was struggling now, Voumi had a lot more mercenaries they could hire for the war, not to mention the backup from Baccal Town, balancing the enemy quantity with their higher average strength!
That said, the Voumi people weren’t fighting blindly. There were two main targets here: The Lord and the source of the drugs!
A larger team was sent to go after the Lord, led by several level 30s, while Hesso and a couple of teams had to find the drug makers and the stocks just in case things went awry. Hesso decided on this task himself, of course.
Hesso didn’t fight for the first mission because Lords were the most protected people, and they’d likely be in the warehouse in case of danger, or at least near it, so that task and getting the token were too difficult.
On the other hand, if he could get the drug maker, then he could have all those riches himself!!
But they didn’t know where to start! They had just been to the former warehouse that their investigators had uncovered, but there was nothing there now!!
“Hesso?”
Unexpectedly, someone called him, and his eyes widened when he saw it was Rowan!
“YOU!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?”
“I was hired in a village nearby, but it fell, so I live here now,” Rowan said, a stoic expression on his face, though some would read it as him being guarded. “My work is to guard the powders.”
Then, he stepped forward, unafraid of the guards next to Hesso. “Where is my grandmother?” he asked, voice solemn.
“Huh?” he asked, confused, but then he realized he had reacted too quickly and caught himself. “Oh. Your grandmother, of course! If you help us, we will tell you!”
Rowan’s face was unchanged. He couldn’t act well, so he didn’t try, letting Hesso’s arrogance fill in the blanks. The bastard was definitely self-absorbed enough to think the world revolved around him, and everyone reacted to whatever he did.
His grandmother was safe and sound in Alterra, and he knew Hesso had forgotten about her already after kicking her out of her home.
The image of his thin grandmother in the forest back then passed by his head, and it made Rowan’s jaw clench in anger, and the atmosphere around him changed. This bastard made his grandmother suffer so much—
However, he calmed himself. Hesso had better use in this war. Fortunately, Rowan’s face was never expressive in the first place. Rather, his anger just made Hesso think he got under Rowan’s skin.
“Very well,” Rowan said in ‘defeat’. This boosted Hesso’s ego, not knowing that he was very well entering a trap. “I will take you there.”
