Chapter 1698: Gian’s Plans
The conversation about the town actually deepened because someone noticed that Gian’s mood was a bit different today. Usually he’d be somber and frowning, but today he looked a bit…nervous? But also a little excited. They wanted to know if the new guys had any idea.
When the newcomers started integrating into their conversations, someone blurted out the question. The newcomers didn’t understand what he glanced like when he was particularly nervous and antsy, but they did think of something.
It was when one of them spoke about how Gian sent a letter to a Terran Town, and that he seemed to know people there.
Their natural reaction was, of course, “Terran Town?!”
Then the conversation branched out because some of the newcomers (whom Gian got the information from in the first place) knew quite a bit. Their village was approached for an alliance with Guardian Village, but their Lord was stubborn and didn’t decide until it was too late.
The man nodded. “It’s true. There’s a Terran Town going around getting subsidiaries,” they said. Although it was Guardian Village going around in the North, they did not keep it a secret that they were working with (or even under) a Town of Terran origins.
Thinking of it now, they couldn’t help but curse. “Our damned Lord refused, look at us now!”
“Tsk! If he only had a bit of brain, would we have become slaves at all?!”
Seeing the sudden and passionate outburst, the locals flinched. Some leaned over in curiosity. “What do you mean?”
“Yeah, tell us more.”
And they did.
“There’s one Terran territory that grew so quickly that it was now a Town.”
“And they’re consolidating every Terran territory, creating a network alliance.”
“They’re really tight-knit, apparently, and would come to each other’s aid when one is attacked.”
“It’s an entire network! I know this because someone in the village was a relative of some representatives. He went with them when they passed through, and he took his team and friends with them. Lucky bastards, already settled down elsewhere by now—”
“Don’t digress!”
This guy had only recently become a slave, so he was still quite energetic.
“Ah, yes, this group of territories would ask Lords to go to this Town and make an oath.”
“Isn’t that risky?”
“Well, it seemed like they somehow could win people over. Those who went to the town would say how unforgettable those memories were. And it was also worth it.”
“Sir Gian asked this of you, right?”
They nodded. In fact, he inquired a lot of questions.
It was because Macha saw how strong he was and wondered out loud whether he was part of the soldier team that arrived in advance. He hadn’t actually seen them, but the recruiters mentioned it before.
The existence of the Terran Mercenary team was a common information spread out because many Terrans questioned how fellow Terrans got so strong so quickly, and oftentimes the case of the soldiers would be mentioned.
He couldn’t forget the stories, and he kept thinking about it: How nice it would be to meet one of those great men?
From there, Gian asked several more questions, and it seemed like he was wholly convinced he was telling the truth, which was a surprise for Macha. After all, he believed because he was an optimistic writer. The others would likely be cynical by default.
In the end, Gian just asked them to hide in an alley first while he headed straight to the Post Office. They didn’t know what happened inside, but his aura had changed a bit, so even they, who didn’t know him for long, took notice.
The rest of them couldn’t help but stop talking, their minds whirling with imagination. Some of them looked up the stairs where Gian’s room was.
They wondered what he was planning.
…
Gian sighed as he sat down on the bed. Alyssa entered the room some time after, and she looked at him with a gentle expression on her face. “Did you send the letter?”
Gian gave her a look before nodding. She had actually gone with him to rescue this batch of people. They pretended to be a couple as a way to distract the slave traders.
They needed to change Gian’s buyer profile as much as they could for safety purposes, and Gian could only be so many ‘sole male buyer’ after purchasing so many batches. She did have to mask her scars and cut her hair, though, just in case.
Anyway, when they heard about an Alterra Town from the mouths of the ‘new slaves’, Gian immediately reacted and sent a letter.
They were in a hurry to get out of there, though, so she could only ask about it now.
“I hope they will believe me.”
“Why wouldn’t they?”
“I… have wronged them,” he said, with conviction in his voice. Alyssa knew he was not lying, but he was at least truly remorseful about it.
With a smile, she sat down on his bed. “Well, you are doing a very good thing now,” she said. “I’m sure things will work out.”
“Either way, we would have to leave soon,” he said. “If war breaks out, we will be helpless.”
…
A few hours later, Gian stood in front of the ‘slaves’. He’d do this in the other houses later, as well. They did not receive a response letter for now, but Gian knew a few things he could do in the meantime.
“Everyone, be ready to move out,” he said. “Within the week, I’ll move at least half of you to Terran Village South.”
This made them flinch, but also hopeful. They were finally moving away from this place!
“What about the rest?”
“Some of us will have to remain to assist any movements,” Gian said. “Besides, leaving in large batches at a time would make us look very suspicious and would also attract too many beasts.”
Then…they remembered they were in a Town, and therefore they’d encounter town-level beasts, and their excitement waned.
Gian looked at them, knowing exactly what they were worried about. “I’ll try to arrange a pick up and rescue,” he said in the end. “If things go as planned…then no one should die.”
He could only hope the Captain and the others would believe in him enough to do so.
