Chapter 1674: Iron Mountains Attacks! (Part 1)
It was finally time for another war, and this time it was the Iron Mountains initiating it.
The elders had debated on attacking only when a territory was trying to attack them. However, they knew they could not afford to be too soft-hearted at this level.
In the end, after quite a few debates, they decided to really get their satellites to wage war, even if it wasn’t necessary at the moment. Anyway, those who would be attacking at the start definitely deserved to be beaten up.
Later, they’d find out it was the right decision, too. Not only did Voumi try to attack them, but they were also organizing and planning to send another one of its subsidiaries to hunt for more slaves, one of which was Limestone Valley. The bastard never learned.
Anyway, their forces lined up and headed around the array, battalion by battalion.
According to the rules, at least a third of the total population of residents must go through the array. This was to prevent territories from just sending special forces and getting them to enter the territory and assassinate the Lord while the war was ongoing or something.
That was definitely the most efficient route, especially for them, who had people who were very strong for their levels.
If that had been allowed, by rule of winning by getting ‘majority of those that entered the array’ into the highest-level walls, they’d win if they entered, even if it was just a few of them.
In fact, if that had been allowed, they’d have long done that. After all, the arrays appeared randomly. If they were fast enough, they could really avoid traps or blockages set up by the enemies.
Of course, not many territories would dare think of this, even if they had the backing of stronger territories.
In any case, they would be the ones on the attacking side this time, so naturally, a lot of care and planning were involved to minimize the casualties.
Being on the attacking side exposed their people to a lot more risks, after all, and they could no longer hide behind their sturdy walls and sentries. The use they could have for their powerhouses would be limited, as well, particularly once they entered enemy territory.
They originally wanted to attack Calma Village first, as it apparently held meaning to a lot of Alterrans and soldiers.
They had defended it through several wars, and it was really one of the better-developed Terran villages at the time before it was taken over.
The former Lord was even in their territory, and he promised subsidiary status with extremely favorable terms if they sold his token back to him.
Because soldiers had been there for a while, they also knew the place well, especially the surrounding terrain. This alone could give them the advantage in the attacking territory.
However, after investigation, they found out that the token was merged by another, the aborigine Gocki village, which had been one of Calma village’s stronger adversaries even back then.
There were a lot of interesting things that happened in this area after their loss.
According to Minko and the others, they were only defeated back then because many of the villages they defeated worked together to deal with them. More prominently, they even went to Towns to hire mercenaries in order to defeat them.
Althea and Garan had heard of the story before. How the five soldiers from the West would create traps and help out in wars, even when they were beyond the level cap. They helped defend against all threats they could defend against, allowing the village to flourish more than others in the area.
They also knew how the same strategy worked against them in the final war because dozens of mercenaries with higher levels than they were hunted them down while outside the territory.
The village that won them was Hito Village (another one of the villages they had defeated early on). However, a few weeks ago, Gocki Village decided that it was unfair for Hito to receive the token. Gocki Village even hired mercenaries from the nearest Town, which was actually Voumi Town.
Because they were only given 28 hours to prepare after the declaration, Hito Village wouldn’t have been able to hire mercenaries in time even if they had thought of doing so.
Gocki was the one who helped hire mercenaries when a few villages allied against Calma Village because they were closer to Voumi Town. So what could Hito Village do against this?
Anyway, long story short, Gocki Village won, getting the token where the Calma token was attached, merging both territories.
However, it was not an easy fight. The mercenaries hired were a mix of those just within the level cap and those beyond it. As a village, they could not exactly hire mercenary teams beyond Level E. It was too expensive. For poor villages, it could even cost more than whatever they had in their wallets.
Gocki was actually only able to hire so many because they had gained a bit of money during the previous war, and they also promised quite a few things to the mercenaries who went with them.
It was a hard fight with elementalists guarding the walls, and their sheer number held back the enemies for a while, especially since those beyond the level cap could not directly attack them.
Both villages suffered a lot of losses, even if Gocki won in the end.
Worse, during the Calma war, both territories received Terran slaves, and they made sure to maximize them.
A lot of Terrans were lost, many of them forced to kill each other. According to the witness accounts, there was not only blood that was shed in that war, but also a lot of tears.
Since the slaves were mostly from Calma and the nearby territories, many of the Terrans on opposing sides knew each other. Some were even blood relatives and friends.
Just imagining the scene was heartbreaking, and Alterra swore to get as many of them back to avoid another tragedy like this.
