Chapter 1672: Undercurrents in Voumi
A/N: Some mature stuff in the first few paragraphs. Just a couple of sentences. Just warning you so you won’t get an unpleasant whiplash lololol.

…

____

Voumi

“Hurry…! Hurry…!” Sandra gasped as she clawed a man’s back as he pounded into her.

Pak! Pak! Pak!

Gingo gritted his teeth as he finished, burying his head on the woman’s shoulder as he released his seed inside of her.

He pulled out and looked at the woman’s stomach, which was bulging a bit. It should be a month or two old now.

He grinned, gently touching the surface. “To think that in a few years, our son would be heir to this place.”

Sandra gasped and covered his mouth. She quickly looked around, pale. “Are you stupid?!” she hissed. “We don’t even have a voice blocker!”

Gingo grinned, opening her legs again and reentering. “Relax,” he said as he let out a breathless groan. “Everyone has been mobilized with all the chaos going around. And we chose an isolated place.”

At the mention of the chaos, Sandra’s expression darkened even more, only slightly distracted by the movements above her.

The past month or so, there had been a heavy air that loomed above Voumi, more than usual.

The drugs had become rampant, and every noble family had at least one addict. Fine, okay, at least they wouldn’t go insane, just addicted. After all, most of these nobles were around level 20. The drugs gave them pleasure and made them seek out more, but they wouldn’t be paralyzed because of it.

The main problem was that even the middle-class citizens and some lower-class citizens, who somehow got the little snorts, were also widely affected.

The thing was, it spread out so much among the masses that it was obvious someone sold the powder for cheap at first, then just spiked up the price after. This was a common tactic, but it was getting annoying.

People would fight, gamble, and kill. The withdrawal syndrome reminded her of zombies, except they were not as rabid, but no less disgusting.

It was really chaotic, and she couldn’t even go to Town to shop without being disgusted anymore!

She was a modern woman. Even if she was fed and clothed well in local standards, how could she live a life of confinement? Especially when her husband, even if he was a lord, was uglier than a toad?!

She did not care for the people much, of course, but what she cared about was the fact that this territory would be her son’s!

How could they be so stupid as to let this get this bad? It might’ve been fine if she had been getting any advantage, but she wasn’t! Rather, it was like watching her house implode from within!

Fortunately, her side wasn’t completely disadvantaged. She looked at Gingo. “Why haven’t you gotten a share of the pie yet?”

If they could actually earn from this epidemic, then maybe it’d be worth it.

Gingo gripped her chin and kissed her, biting her lips.

“Don’t be so impatient, love,” he said. “I have already traced the merchants, and I should get a deal with them soon.”

He smirked, already seeing the money that would pour into his wallet.

After that succeeded… he looked at the woman’s stomach.

While he was gaining fortune, the next to grab was… the territory itself!!

…

At this time, the Lord of Voumi Town, Mafo, was meeting with his advisors in the Town Center.

The topic was drugs. Rather, what they knew of its sources.

“The rumor has it that the sources of the drugs should also be a level 1 Town.”

“What’s the name?”

“We do not know yet,” the man said, shivering. “But they had made many layers of security. They are extremely meticulous, my Lord.”

“That’s all you can report to me??”

“We already spent hundreds of gold worth of resources to gather this information, Milord.”

“Is that something to brag about!?” he yelled, and the men immediately bowed, hoping to quell his anger.

“I apologize!”

Mafo gritted his teeth, slapping the table and destroying his 12th table this month. “You idiots! Don’t you see? Other people are making money off of us!!”

This insight was actually not one that had gotten to Mafo on his own. He realized this due to his greed after getting addicted himself.

Though it might have been enlightened by a whisper, particularly from a certain smart-mouthed slave, Eian.1

“Milord…as the humble slave you have entrusted with the territory’s events, I have noticed some things…

“The merchants have gained a great advantage in selling to us. I’m afraid that they might try to control us with it.”

He was offended at first until he realized…that he truly did feel a loss, like he was excessively succumbing. It was fine if it was just women, because they were easy to control, but his own body?

This was the same with the other nobles. It sent alarms in his mind.

Thinking back, in the past couple of weeks, he, himself, had spent dozens of gold on this thing. Now, the merchant he was talking with had the audacity to ask for more!

“It’s extremely suspicious, Milord,” Eian paused. “It’s as if…they’re trying to control you.”

It was then that Mafo realized—he should just get to the source himself! Not only would he have an unlimited source of the resource, but he’d be the one making money off of it!

His level was high, so his mind wouldn’t be muddled by the drug so much that he’d throw himself to poverty. Drugs, to him, were just like sex—something he indulged in, but not something that would completely grip his mind.

However, seeing as how it still influenced his decision, various suspicions flooded his mind.

They’re trying to control you, Milord, the people selling these in your land. Perhaps…even some nobles who had gotten an advantage.

Eian’s words echoed in his mind, and the more he thought about it, the more livid he got.

Who could be behind it? How dare they try to mess with his head?!
